So Nervous

So I guess this is a bad thread to come to if I'm stuffing a Subway sandwich in my mouth, hu?

OK, listen up you Nervous Nellies...... Last January was my first ever long distance event. Trust me when I tell you KNOW ONE was more nervous than I was. See that tag? I didn't get it by being brave. ;) Being nervous is TOTALLY NORMAL. You should be! You're about to do something totally awesome! This IS a big deal. :woohoo:

But don't be scared. You are well trained, you've been hanging around here so you're well educated...now just make sure you're ready to go. :thumbsup2

Got your race uniform? Cam's famous check list? Got your throw away clothes? Running shoes? Fueling and hydrating plans? All your race day neccesities packed in your carry on?

Alrighty then. Let's enjoy the ride. And when you are done...let me tell you.....You will think this is one of THE GREATEST THINGS YOU HAVE EVER DONE! :yay:

See ya' at Pop Century! :goodvibes

Awww Carrie, You're very sweet. I am nervous, but I have learned that it is OK. I am also a complete witch. And I have learned that is my normal personality, I mean, I have learned that is part of the taper for me. :rotfl:

Let me tell you, I sat by Judy at the start of the 1/2 last year and she was one nervous nelly. Don't get me wrong, I was too!!!! But we all made it through and the WISH family is so awesome for support. I can't tell you how many times I had tears in my eyes during that race... for good reasons. Seeing all those WISH supporters along the course was so awesome, you were never alone!!!!

all right, add one more to my nerves - we decided to rent points - and I'm just as nervous as can be about that minor detail!! Until 48 hours before when I can call and confirm that they ARE expecting us, its just a nerve thing - we're not listed on ME, dont know if we have the DP, we have no paperwork whatsoever, but hey, what's there to be nervous about? I mean really we're only running a half marathon!! :cutie:

:worship: to all those that have gone before, and to all those that will cheer me on!! I get tears in my eyes just thinking about it!!

Carrie's right, the first time is SO nerve-racking. I'll never forget the weeks leading up to my first marathon. But you know what--my mom always told me you're only nervous because you're ready. If you weren't prepared, there would be nothing to be nervous about. So remember that--you guys ARE ready. I think it was Hal Higdon who said that the training, and all the cold, lonely, long workouts by yourself--those are the hard things. The race is just the icing on the cake. It really is true. The half/full marathon will probably be one of the easiest runs you have ever done. So don't forget to enjoy it. Take the time to look around you. It's so easy to forget where you are and what it is that you are doing. You are a long distance athlete. 95% of the rest of the country can't even dream about doing what you do. So have a good time out there. And go get that bling!

Ha, Steve, speak for yourself!

Don't you remember I was one hurtin' puppy around mile 12 of the marathon last year? By mile 16 my quads were burning!:rotfl: I can laugh about it now, but at the time, ouchie!

That being said, at the finish line I was SO happy to see you and I was so proud we had conquered Goofy!:grouphug:

I'm not coping very well.

Last night I dreamed I forgot my shoes. I awoke in a panic and reassured myself - in case that happens - I can probably (in the worse case) buy some at the expo.

So I fell back asleep and dreamed I overslept the half AND full starts:sad1: .

Hello...my name is Jeanne.... this will be my first full marathon.....and I am NERVOUS AS $#*&!

However, I did have a nice thought while I was doing the last of my longish walks today: I am going to do the entire event as if it is my victory lap.The training and hard work are over. I am going to seize the moment and try to enjoy every minute of those 26.2 miles.
When people cheer me on, I'm going to view it as congratulations on my success. Gee, even gold medal Olympians only get to stand on their podium for 2 or 3 minutes. I'm going to get close to seven full hours of glory!

Jeanne - That is such an excellent thought! :thumbsup2

NEPBill - Just you wait until 2009, darlin'... :rolleyes1

For me music is a great way to ease nerves about the upcoming race and realize that only I know my own capabilities and better yet that I mentally set my own limitations or lack thereof...

For example anyone with Kanye West - Stronger on their mp3 player probably starts bobbing their head as they recollect the rhythmn to these words: "Harder better faster STRONGER."

Or even the main line in the chorus: "That that don't kill me, can only make me STRONGER."

I know those are the kinds of songs I drum in my head after mile 20...

Funny you should mention music, Matt. Lately I've been listening with my teens to the High School Musical soundtracks. (Can I just admit that I LOVE that at 15 they still love Disney music and movies????) There's a boppin' little song called "All for One" that reminds me of the WISH team and marathoning in general:

"Let's celebrate today 'cause there'll never be another
We're stronger this time,
been there for each other
Everything's just right

Everybody all for one,
A real summer has just begun!
Let's rock and roll and just let go,
feel the rhythm of the drums
We're gonna have fun in the sun
Now that all the hard work, work is done!
Everybody, one for all and all for one!

All for one, one!"

All those hard workouts are behind us and we're at graduation day! It's not a cakewalk by any means, but there's something about getting this far... We're right on the verge of party time!

Matt: Soooooo funny. I think anyone at the gym can tell when this song comes on my iPod!!! I also speed up when I hear "Goodbye to You" and "Cyclone".

Funny offshoot is that my niece, age 8, asked me if I had "Psycho" on my iPod the other day. Of course I had no idea what she was talking about and she says, very adamantly, "you know...she moves her body like a psycho". ROFL :rotfl2: Now I cannot sing it the right way.

I have all my run music together by tempo and HAVE to have it when I am on my way to a race. It gets me in the right "happy place" and keeps the beats in my head while I am in the race. :upsidedow

I am looking for more music to download (Santa gave me an itunes gift card!)

I do lean towards country, so finding inspiring stuff outside of Disney and musical soundtracks is a challenge!! How about the Judd's "Why Not ME!" or "This is the Moment" (which isnt a great fast song, but its plugged into my ipod at my 2 mile mark when I'm ready to hit the shortcut and go HOME - but I hear Donny Osmond sing - and the momentum builds - I'm ready to run another mile... or more!!
This is the moment!
This is the day,
When I send all my doubts and demons
On their way!

Every endeavor,
I have made - ever -
Is coming into play,
Is here and now - today!

This is the moment,
This is the time,
When the momentum and the moment
Are in rhyme!

Give me this moment -
This precious chance -
I'll gather up my past
And make some sense at last!

This is the moment,
When all I've done -
All the dreaming,
Scheming and screaming,
Become one!

This is the day -
See it sparkle and shine,
When all I've lived for
Becomes mine!

For all these years,
I've faced the world alone,
And now the time has come
To prove to them
I've made it on my own!

This is the moment -
My final test -
Destiny beckoned,
I never reckoned,
Second Best!

I won't look down,
I must not fall!
This is the moment,
The sweetest moment of them all!

This is the moment!
Damn all the odds!
This day, or never,
I'll sit forever
With the gods!

When I look back,
I will always recall,
Moment for moment,
This was the moment,
The greatest moment
Of them all!

You/we have gotten into one of the most fun things you can EVER imagine! We will meet, stroll and enjoy! Really!

STROLL!! :rotfl2: OK that made me laugh out loud - IF I knew I could stroll, I wouldnt have these butterflies in my stomach!!

Seriously - thank you so much for the awesome support - and listening to the jittery Nervous Nellies!! I appreciate the calm reassurance - have no doubt - its AMAZING!! :goodvibes
