So much for electronic bill paying

Most personal tax returns are cash-basis, which means you claim income as you receive it and expenses as you pay them. So, the date on the check is all that matters.

If your state has property tax refunds or deductions, they cross reference with county tax rolls that use date of receipt.

Here's what our County charges though if you pay your property tax yourself online:

We used bill pay through our bank twice when we lived in our rental house. Our landlord was 3 hrs away. There was no fee from our bank for using it and I think that you can send out like 20 different bill pay payment each month but after she didn't receive the rent check one month because she forgot to tell us she moved she just gave us her account # from Bank of America to just directly deposit it into her bank account (I would not suggest doing that..we are honest people but not everyone is).

To renew car tags there is a service fee as well. Online renewal (completely worth it IMO) there is a charge for an eCheck but a slightly larger fee for paying by credit/debit card. Renewing by check is just the cost of the postage. Renewing in person is a $5.00 fee (for each vehicle) plus a 2.4% of total transaction or $3.00 minimum if using a credit/debit card. Basically either mail it in or pay online because they really wanted to reduce the amount of people who renew in person by tacking on the $5.00 per vehicle charge which started Jan 2015.

my area, its 2.3% with credit card, $2.75 for debit card. Free for echeck.

must be unlucky... they should at least offer 1 solution for free.

My state does not have an income tax, so there's nothing to cross reference.

In fact, one time I dated my payment in December, but waited until January 1st to mail it so the federal deduction would fall in the next year. Even though my postmark was in January, and obviously they received it in January, they still sent me a receipt that said I paid in December.

So, I suspect they do their best to log it in the correct year.

My town charges 3.5% so I swing by and drop a check in their drop box when I am in the area.

For some things you get hit with more charges, makes me just want to go back and pay with a check. I am so tired of paying all these extra fees for any kinds of stuff. It seems like you keep working for fees on top of the bills. UGH
