So it is the iPad

I don't think an iPad is in my future. Not at over $800 for the memory I would want the the 3G and on top of that $29.99 for monthly data fees. I guess I will be sticking with my Kindle for reading and go for a Droid phone. I had so gotten my hopes up for the iPhone coming to Verizon. :sad1:

Did they say the Verizon thing was definately out? From what I understood, the exclusive with ATT doesn't end until June.

Shoulda called it iFail.

No java, no flash, no webcam, very tiny memory....yikes. I think this is gonna be a very niche item here....where is it's market place? E-reader folks? At this price? Jeeze, dunno bout this thing....

I agree it is defiantly an IFAIL
I rather have spend that much on a laptop that can do so much more.

I want one!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE my iTouch!! It is the best thing ever!!

DH is an artist and wants the bigger draw pad. (hahaha pad)

I want the reader...I had been saving up for the kindle, now this answers it all. BUT if it makes the kindle prices drop...then I could go for the kindle.

They just announced iBooks for the ipad.....so kevin will you be giving up your kindle?

If this iPad uses a back lit reading configuration I don't think it will be replacing much in the way of eReaders. Trying to read a book on a screen that is back lit is very tiring to the eyes.

DW who is not a gadget freak has said we should look at this when we are at WDW in the summer.
Guess who will not need to be told twice :thumbsup2

Giving that they worked a deal with AT&T for the 3G service/wi-fi hotspots, it seems a bit less likely that a Verizon iPhone is coming. Why not go with a new provider, unless Verizon said "no" to an unlocked, no contract data-only deal.

Verizon doesn't have much in the way of wi-fi hotspots as far as I know either, so that could have been a factor.

I wasnt able to watch the live stream...but from what I'm seeing....I'm not sold on this yet.

I also dont see a backlit reading device killing the e-ink readers. Sony tried this on one of their readers and it wasnt successful.

I'll let you know if I change my mind once I do more research.

This was just on our local ABC news. I am not sold at all. I think it is cool that it is similar to a "super size iPhone" screen, as the news put it, but I still don't think it is going to kill the Kindle.

Well, it seems as though a lot of people are disappointed with this - Apple stock is down after the announcement. People like me (gadget freaks / historical first adopters) will race to get this (and I will), but I think they may have an issue getting this into the hands of standard users (the vast majority of the market).

But this is Apple we're talking about - and I wouldn't count them out on spec. As with any device like this, it will all come down to applications. As new apps are developed for it, as new software is developed for it, you may find more and more people getting on board. It will be interesting to watch.

Irrespective, I'm buying one as soon as they'll take my money :)

The Hollywood Reporter seems to think that Hollywood is disappointed, expecting some sort of new media experience. What exactly they thought they could get out of this I have no idea. 3D? Virtual Reality? Automatic popcorn popper?

I guess I can still hope for the iPhone. The fact the iPad is going with AT&T makes me not want it. I work for Verizon. I hope to stay loyal. If I want a mobile data device, I suppose I will be going with the Droid. Maybe there will be some kind of deal with Verizon later on. And the price will drop.

I'm trying to talk my boss into getting me a Droid, and then I've got to talk Pete into porting E-Ticket... :)

In doing just a bit of research.....and it really is just a little bit.....I still dont see this hurting the Kindle.

It's about double the price.

You will need to pay a monthly fee.

It's much larger and therefore less portable.

It's backlit...meaning eyestrain...especially in older eyes.

From the little information available...it looks like books will be more expensive that Amazon. (Best sellers at $15 instead of $9.99)

Apple has said that they have "achieved a 10 hour battery life". If I turn the Whispernet off on my Kindle....I get two weeks out of a single charge. With the Whispernet on....about a week of fairly regular use.

While this isnt being touted as an e-reader....it is one of the functions and while it does other cool stuff.....I see a place for both.

Not ready to give up my Kindle.

Now...if they make an Oberon cover for the iPad (it is truly an awful name)....that could change my mind. :)
