So if you could choose Magic West Coast Ports?

If the Magic does go to the West Coast for the summer of 2005, where would you want to go? Let's see if we can come up with the same research data that DCL might have! Vote for your favorite ports. And my apologies to Alaska cruisers, I know the Mexican towns but not the Alaskan. How far can we go in seven days?

Here are my votes:

Cabo San Lucas, because it is beautiful.

Zihuatenejo, because it is one of the neatest places in Mexico, killer snorkeling and diving around Ixtapa Island down near the Club Med. And one of the loveliest little beaches, anywhere, and I'm not gonna tell you the name.

Puerto Vallarta for the churches, history and beaches.

And Huatulco, for day trips to where most of the best crafts in Mexico come from.

Since this will be during the summer, I'm now hoping it will travel North of LA instead of South of LA where the heat can almost be intolerable in Mexico. (We stayed in San Jose Del Cabo 3 years ago and it was almost unbearable to stay out in the sun (even in the pool). Just a thought. - Mike

Zihua requires tenders, Manzanillo is a major commercial and Navy port. Not positive about the others as I have never "shipped" to them. But they are common ports on cruises. Anyone?

Without trying to throw a wet towel on this poll, it should be noted that the possible ports are a function of the port of origin, the length of the cruise, the speed of the ship, and the Passenger Services Act (PSA) of 1886.

Because the DCL ships are foreign-flagged, they have to call on at least one non-U.S. port due to the PSA. Canada is too far from Los Angeles or Long Beach, so that means Mexico.

7-night cruises from Los Angeles or Long Beach would be likely to go to the Mexican Riviera (such as Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta)

3- or 4-night cruises from Los Angeles or Long Beach (as part of one-week packages involving Disneyland) would go to Ensenada, with a possible stop at Avalon on Catalina Island. There just isn't enough time to go to the Mexican Riviera destinations further south.

Any 7-night cruises to Alaska would depart from Vancouver or Seattle (with a visit to at least one Canadian port). I don't see Disney celebrating Disneyland's 50th anniversary by positioning the Disney Magic in Vancouver or Seattle.

I did the Mexican Riviera with Cabo, Mazatlan, and Puerta Vallarta a few years ago on Carnival and had a great time. Carnival's doing an 8-day cruise out of San Diego, which we'll be on, in March which will go to Acapulco, Zihuatenejo, and Manzanillo.
I would love to have Disney come out to the west coast, but I do feel sorry for everybody who is disappointed that it might be out of the Carribbean during the summer of '05.
I wish they would just build another ship! Easier said than done, I guess!

I would prefer a southern route over a northern route (non Alaska).

Assuming DCL west would be based out of LA and a top speed of 25knts at 24hrs we cover about 600knts. That would put us around southern Oregon. Another 24 hrs puts us around Victoria BC. Another 24 hrs gets us up to Juneau. 3 days up, 3 days back 1 day there doesn't sound like a reasonable cruise so Alaska is out if the ship is based out of Souther Cal.

A doable northern cruise would be San Francisco, Seattle, Victoria and maybe Vancouver. An interesting port might be Portland Oregon since you would be sailing up the mighty Columbia river for 50 to 60 miles. Both shores are mostly forests. Oh yea, there is an abundance of shopping at all of these ports.

Like I said earlier, I would prefer a southern route to warm waters, sunny beaches and snorkeling.

Yes, the choices are plentiful, but the DCL "Speculation" (copyright verandahman) may not be there!!! But we can always hope!

I agree with Horace. Much as I would love them to sail to Alaska I can't see them leaving out of Long Beach to do it.

I've done the Mexican Riveria and it isn't that great to me.

Now if I could get on the repositioning cruise through the Panama Canal then I'm all for that. Or if they position up in Washington and really do an Alaskan I may be for that as well.

The latter seems unlikely as the Magic has way too much open space for an Alaskan sailing.

25 knots is overspeed for the Magic (24 knots top speed), and that is at sea states between zero and 3. Typical off-shore Pacific waters are sea state 3 to 5, so that translates into a significant speed reduction to avoid damaging the hull (and a rough ride).

Heading south out of LA, you could reasonably expect to make Purerto Vallarta on a seven day, round-trip itinerary (assuming stops in a couple ports like Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas).

Some other options include:

It could also do 1-way trips to Alaska in about 10-12 days (debark in Alaska, new passengers embark for the southbound leg), sailing from LA.

In 10 or 12 days out of LA, it could do Hawaii (10 days one-way / 12-14 days round trip [Takes about 4 sea days to reach Hawaii from LA]).

Of course let's not discount adding a Southern Caribbean itenerary (only 8 days out of PC). A 10-day Caribbean (more regularly) could also be the big news!

We need a Mexican Riviera itinerary. Yeah, we've been to Puerta Vallarta twice, but we missed Cabo and Mazatlan due to really bad weather. So the only way I could get DW to do that itin again would be with the mouse.

The rumor really caught fire after (#1) DCL opened up all date for 2005 for the Wonder and only up to april/may for the Magic. They have since opened up Sept to Dec '05 which leaves the summer of '05 still unaccounted for. The BIG (should be only) Disney event that is happening in 2005 is at Disneyland. (#2) July 17, 1955 Disneyland opened to the public and turns 50 years old. (#3) Matt O. who has been the president of DCL since the beginning now is the person in charge at Disneyland. You can go to MiceAge and click on receint articles by Al to see some rumors "in print"
