So if I plan on using this Navigator app...

I was on the Disney Dream Sept. 9-12, 2016 and we had it per person in our stateroom.

How do you sign up for the free 50mbs? Would like a little data to check on the pup and send Christmas good tidings.

I turn my phone to airplane mode, then connect wifi to DCL guest. How do I make sure other apps aren't running in the background? Also, does airplane mode prevent my phone from receiving any emails and texts (I don't want to receive any). I only use my phone for pictures and maybe the app. I'm not a techie expert. :)

To answer your question, when you turn your airplane mode on, it does the following to your phone:
1. Disables cellular, you won't be able to send or receive anything that requires a cellular network (voice calls, texts, mobile data)
2. Disables Wi-Fi, and stops your phone from scanning for Wi-Fi
3. Disables Bluetooth
4. Disables GPS (on some devices)

You can go back and enable Wifi (and technically Bluetooth) while Airplane Mode is enabled - which will allow you to connect to the DCL Wi-Fi but keep your phone from trying to connect to a cellular service

Hope that helps.

Have things changed recently with the free 50MB (eg per stateroom, not per guest)?. Both my partner and I successfully got the free 50MB allowance EACH (same stateroom) on both of our last two cruises.
On our cruise last May it was per stateroom. Same as our 2014 cruises (3 of them). That being said, there have been several reports of people being able to sign up separately (so the room actually got 2 or 3 50mb packages).

1. WiFi: On embarkation day, each stateroom can sign up and get 50MB for FREE to use for the length of their cruise. If you sign up after day 1, or you use up the 50 free MB, you can pay for other packages.

That 50 was used up by is in one Amazon product search, fwiw.

Chat function sounds perfect. Just what we'll need, thank you for this info. I was waiting for someone to tell me to disconnect, easier said than done for a 13 yr old addicted to snap chat. Lol

She could pay for it herself. ;)

While all of that should be true, for the brief time DH was using an iPhone for work he put it in airplane mode for a flight and came home to charges. The phone was getting texts and was updating apps the whole international flight. While in airplane mode. He did successfully argue the charges; it was a glitch. But it wasn't fun to see.

Grandpop here is so looking forward to the grandkids not having their nose in the phone 24/7. They may even have to talk to each other.lol

Fwiw they probably are communicating with each other through their devices. You just can't hear what they are saying. :)

This is exactly why I went into the cellular settings on my iPhone and switched it off for each app individually. It was kind of a pain and took a while, but the piece of mind was worth it for me.

I downloaded the app just to see if I could look at some schedules and menus. But I guess you don't see anything unless you're connected to the ships wifi?

Reminds me of this commercial from a few years ago (not the best sound - it seems to be a video of the ad on TV, but it's the best I found)

I not only put my phone on airplane mode, but I went into the settings under cellular and turned it off for all apps. I was afraid that Verizon would just use roaming or something and I'd come home to a $600 cell phone bill or something crazy like that. It was kind of a pain to go through the list of apps one by one, but it was the only way. Just got my phone bill and it was fine so doing that worked!

I did all that too, but started getting messages that my phone was roaming internationally. Had my daughter look at a few things and she turned something off, because it kept overriding and turning roaming back on even though I was in airplane mode. About midnight I got another message saying I was roaming, so I just turned my phone off and couldn't use the app. I couldn't take a chance that something was not working the way it should. We all have iPhones and all on sprint, but only my phone kept telling me I was roaming. I have an iPhone 6 and my husband a 6S, but only I had a problem. Got the bill and no extra charges so far.

It does take a few minutes to set up everyone's phone to be able to chat with each other. There is a code that you have to accept from each other. It's explained well on the app once onboard. The first day at lunch we take the time to do this.

Just returned from a cruise out of Galveston and we were able to get the free 50 MB plan on the first day. Within an hour after setting it up I had used about 40 MB of data from emails and other notifications from apps. Someone in guest services instructed me on what settings to change to fix that. Honestly the easiest fix was to just sign off from the log in page and only the app will work. Also keep that page in a tab or bookmarked so you can keep track of your usage.

When "texting" with the Navigator App, I seem to remember that it didn't beep, buzz or vibrate, you actually had to look at your phone/app to see if someone was texting you, so not quite as nice as texting where you are notified, but then again, everyones texts didn't bother / disturb everyone around you.

if you want your 50mb to last for more than a few minutes, make sure you sign out right away and only sign in when you want to check your e-mail or whatever.

Most phones will go crazy uploading photos or updating apps the second they see a wifi connection and will blow through your free 50mb really quick.

Can the kids clubs contact you through the app or do you still need to carry your room phone?
