So if I plan on using this Navigator app...

if you want your 50mb to last for more than a few minutes, make sure you sign out right away and only sign in when you want to check your e-mail or whatever.

Most phones will go crazy uploading photos or updating apps the second they see a wifi connection and will blow through your free 50mb really quick.
Thank you for this!! I was hoping to stretch the 50MB as far as I can to do little bursts of work that is time sensitive while we are sailing so this will solve my problem from the previous sailing.

Can the kids clubs contact you through the app or do you still need to carry your room phone?

Only wave phones. They are just so fashionable!!

You need to carry the wave phone.

But if your kids are old enough to carry (and not lose) a device that gets wifi, they can get the app and text you through it. That's what ds does because his no-SIM Samsung gets wifi. We all have to make sure we are actively checking the texts in the app because it doesn't always alert, but we all know to do that and to know texting through the app isn't immediate and to be patient.

Is the app working with IOS 10? Still haven't updated and cruise late Jan 2017. Thx!

I belive the alert was improved in the most recent app update

ok I read though this whole thread and I dont see anywhere how you actually get the app? Where is it to download in the first place?

I turn my phone to airplane mode, then connect wifi to DCL guest. How do I make sure other apps aren't running in the background? Also, does airplane mode prevent my phone from receiving any emails and texts (I don't want to receive any). I only use my phone for pictures and maybe the app. I'm not a techie expert. :)

Be careful if anyone in your party is using iCloud with their iPhones. It cost me $3-400 before I figured out that my iPhone quietly was using all our data to upload each of my vacation photos to iCloud. I had even tried to disable it with help from the internet help desk onboard, but I didn't because I'd lose all pictures on the phone.

During our most recent cruise, we made sure everyone had iCloud disabled. My internet costs ended up less than half of what they had been in the past. They would have been even lower, except that Apple made a software update available the first day of our cruise and I wasted 500 Mb (=$45) in 13 minutes as my phone downloaded it late in the evening (argh!). It used to be easy to disable automatic updates, but I couldn't find the option after they changed the user interface.

In short, iCloud and cruising don't mix at all!!! Make sure no one in your party has it disabled ahead of time or tell them they won't have internet access. Speaking from experience, it is no fun being stuck in your stateroom, backing up all the photos from 3 iPhones to your laptop, while everyone else is attending the sailing away party :).

In the App Store for Apple and whatever store people use for Android.

Yes, it works with iOS 10.

The other key is that you can connect to the DCL_GUEST wifi WITHOUT signing in so you don't use either your 50MB free or paid wifi.

You can download it from the App Store (for IPhone). Do this before you leave home but it will not work until you get onboard.

I know my husband is going to need to stay connected to work email during our cruise (it is our first). What is the best way to do this without costing a fortune??

Funny thing is, my dad was not signed up for Connect-At-Sea, but when he had the Disney app open and was on the DCL-Guest wireless, he kept getting email and Facebook notifications. He couldn't use the email and FB apps, but he got the notifications anyway.

I've had that happen as well. I think it sometimes sneaks through on the wifi. I didn't have any other charges on my phone or for wifi.

Can you explain this a little more? Do you mean just when you're chatting with each other on board? Is it obvious how to do this?

Sorry, I meant free wi-if that you have to sign up for on the first day. Is it on the boat or at the port?

If you sign up for a wifi plan, you don't need to be logged into your account to be able to connect to DCL_Guest and use the chat feature on the app. If you stay logged in, you'll use up some of your data.

Where do you sign up for the free wifi?

So to be clear, and it wasn't clear to me at first, there are two related but separate systems here. If you are interested in the details, read on!

The Disney Navigator App, connects to the DCL_Guest WiFi, and doesn't use any of your WiFi data, free or otherwise. Before you get on the ship, the App is just a countdown clock. After you get on board, and connect to DCL_Guest, a lot of other features unlock. One set is the online navigators, which let you see all of the activities on the ship for the rest of the cruise. This is great if you have to miss something, to see if it will happen again later. Likewise, you can see all of the menus for the rest of the trip. This is also very helpful if you want to choose an entree, based on what your choices will be tomorrow, etc. Third, and perhaps most importantly, is the chat function. This allows you to talk to other people on board. They have to "accept" you first, so at first you'll be having to find and "request" contact with the rest of your party, once you do, you are all set. Like regular chat you can set up multiple threads with different combinations of people, so one for your whole group, one for just your spouse, one for just your kids, etc. We had nine in our group, so this was a great way to find out who was doing what, or where to meet for lunch, etc. It doesn't beep or vibrate when you get a message, so you will have to check it periodically, but it becomes a habit. All of this is free and consumes no wi-fi data you may have paid for. Also, it works with any (most) wi-fi capable apps. My 12 YO niece didn't have a smart phone, but she had a second-hand iPod touch, and that worked fine for the app.

The second thing is the 50 MB of free Wi-FI. This you have to sign up for, using your phone, once you get on the ship. Before you do, you'll want to turn off all of your background apps and automatic downloads, or it will eat up all of your free data in no time. If you aren't sure how to do that, I've read here that you can get help from Guest Services on the ship. Mostly, make sure you log out of it whenever you aren't using it, so it doesn't accidentally use your data. You can still use the Navigator app, as it is separate. Once you are ready for your free 50 MB, there are instructions in the first Navigator you get on exactly how to get it. Reports differ on if it is 50 MB per cabin or per person. We were able to get 50 MB for my wife and another 50 for me. We both stated our name and cabin number, so we weren't trying to trick the system, all it asked of us was to provide different e-mail addresses, which we did. You must do this before midnight on the first night to get the free MB. You can buy MB any time you want, but they are in non-refundable bundles. So if you buy 1000 MB, but only use 150, no refund. On the other hand if you buy 100 MB, and then end up needing more, you have to buy a new package. So, for instance, 10, 100 MB packages cost way more than 1, 1000 MB package, so it is to your advantage to make a decent guess as to how much you are likely to use (ballpark) and buy the appropriate package.

So to make sure I understand, if I don't sign up for the 50 B free wifi, I can safely put my iPhone in airplane mode, reenable wifi only, connect to the DCL_Guest wifi, use the Navigator app, and not need to worry about disabling iCloud and all that, correct?
