So, has your dog ever caught the squirrel?

I saw him about a week after I let him go. I went out in the woods where we turned him loose and called for him. He recognized my voice and tried to get to me, but couldn't figure out how to maneuver the trees to get to where I was. It was getting very dark and I had to leave. I left him some treats. He was alot of fun. When my BF found him, he was nearly dead and covered with mites. He was such a little pig when he ate too! And made the cutest noises as a baby. He was the second squirrel I've raised.

*sigh* I miss Earl the Squirrel. LOL

My dog caught a rabbit one time when we lived in the country. She was so proud. Brought it on the porch and showed it to all of us. :crazy2: She never ate it.

I don't blame you, I would miss Earl too!

Where my cats are concerned I have no doubt they would catch SOMETHING. They love hunting mosquitos and other bugs that get in the back door and they usually catch their prey!

Sadie has been at it all day and she is still at it!! I should also mention that I filled the squirrel feeders on the tree and also the bird feeders but again she could care less about the birds.

Ollie caught a squirrel one day for just a fleeting second by pawing it's tail, but it immediately broke away. He was flabbergasted LOL.

My cocker spaniel just ignores the squirrels even when they are inches away from him - but he woke me up one night howling like there were vampires in the back yard - he'd found a turtle and wouldn't stop until someone came and rescued him (ie moved the turtle out of the yard).

We have a Weimarner, so stalking small animals is in his blood! Last year's count was 3 oppossums and 4 birds.

Nothing so far this year!

I won't let him get a squirrel, I always start making noise when he starts getting too close.

The oppossums he got in the middle of the night when I let him out to do his business, found them dead the next morning! With the birds, I think he just gets lucky!

He specializes in baby groundhogs. The neighbors always want to "rent" him out. Has also eaten a nest of baby birds (I was not happy), a nest of baby bunnies -- again not happy. He just won't come in, listen and he stalks them until they are GONE. Guess it is the Circle of Life. If he ever caught a cat it would be history.

Arkansas Minnie thats hillarious. We have a cat who would be like that. Shes scared of everything, poor baby!

Max has nailed two squirrels already, and he's always on the look-out for more.

Last spring, he snagged a baby. :( Poor thing! I think Max was just trying to play with it--he was still a baby himself.

I tried to get him to leave it alone by making noise in the yard. I wasn't intervening past that--if it's mama and papa were watching, I wasn't game to mess with them.

Then in the summer, the day before a party we throwing in our backyard, DH looked outside and said, "I see something brown in the grass." I told him it must be dog poop and handed him a paper towel to clean it up.

He came back in to get a garbage bag--it was no poop, it was a bloody squirrel carcass! :earseek:

Earlier that day, I was outside setting up for the party. I did not see any dead squirrel body then. Only Max and DS were in the yard after that, so I'm fairly confident it was Max who took out the squirrel.

Oh, for those of you who don't know Max, he's an 85 pound lab/rottie mix. I'm not sure that rotties are natural hunters, but labs are, and Max is definitely a hunter.

We don't have squirrels here but Susie (a sheltie) caught a rabbit. And like Rock'N Robin said, they make a terrible scream. She got a snake too and cornered a ground hog that was bigger than her.

We have 2 goldens and in our first house, the squirrels were terrible, but the never caught one. Our oldest dog caught a bird in flight once, she didn't kill it. She would have made an excellent hunting dog. I yelled, "drop it!" She did and it flew away. Gosh that was at least 10 years ago! My old girl!

We had a baby squirrel when I was a kid too. Found in the mouth of our lab/golden mix! We hand fed it for a few weeks and then gave it to the zoo where they let it run free (it's a big zoo).

My Mom's dog loves to chase the squirrels but has never been successful catching one. My cat caught one when she was younger!!:p
