So, did you tip your realtor?

do what feels right for you.

i sent my realtor a big thing from Harry & David.

Really? Do you send your boss a gift basket every payday???? Because essentially when you hire a realtor, you become their "boss" and they become your "employee". The commission is their salary.

If I am the realtor's boss, I might want to provide a bonus for a job well done.

Our realtor was DH's aunt. She gave us her commission to buy down the interest rate on the loan. I gave her a large assortment of gift cards to restaurants. DH's cousin gave her a gift certificate to a spa when she did the same thing for them.

I don't see anything wrong with showing appreciation for someone who has completed a job well done. :confused3 Of course, recommendations to friends is the best way to show appreciation.

We've had a very good experience with this realtor. She's effervescent, hard working, 100% reliable, found us our dream house and got us in it before it went on the market(thus it is ours), put up with the seller's horrible old man realtor, chased our lender for us instead of our having to do it, lined up all the inspections and was on the money each and every time with all her recommendations. We love her and want her to be part of our family, ;)

So, has anyone ever tipped their realtor? I know, I know, she's making money off the sale. That's not the point - the money, I mean. Her customer service has been stellar, without flaw. She deserves some sort of attaboy as a token of our heartfelt thanks.

Not looking for a debate, I just want some suggestions. K?

Realtors make a very good commision on a sale. I can't beleive anyone would consider tipping them. I suppose if you have the money you could tip the standard 15% if they did a good job. If they did a really good job I would go for 20% without a doubt.

We bought our realtor a dozen roses. She was wonderful. She even bought us a house warming gift which we did not expect at all. I would reccomend her to anyone. She made our home buying experience great.

Maybe it makes a difference where you live. Our realtor sells the majority of her homes in the 30-100K range, so she's making a commission of $1500-$5K, roughly. Her range covers, I would bet, a 70 mile radius from her office. Rarely does she have someone come in and buy the first house she shows them. I know other realtors up here, and very few "make a living" at it (or at least, not easily).

This, obviously, does not apply in more prosperous areas;).

To each their own!

Terri

I don't see it that way. You are paying for a service performed by the Realtor. You are his or her customer. It would be like tipping your insurance agent. I'd just send a gift basket.

I brought my agent a goodie basket the Christmas after we bought our house. We liked her alot.

Funny thing the day I was delivering the basket to her, I got back to my office and there was a plant waiting for me from her lol.

We received a gift from our realtor at closing, but we also gave her something. She really went waaaaaay above and beyond since we were buying long distance, and we wanted to express our appreciation. We know she did stuff she did not have to do.

Do whatever you feel is right.

We did because ours went above & beyond the call of duty IMO......he probably showed me 50 homes, sat at the house we eventually purchased while a plumber fixed the busted pipes that were discovered during inspection (gotta love a foreclosure), never showed me homes that were WAY out of my price point like our first realtor constantly did. BUT, I was told (by my realtore in LA who sold my house there) that it was best NOT to tip in cash because then that money had to run through the real estate company and the broker would again take his/her fees, etc. She told me gift cards were the way to go. So, we gave our realtor about $200 worth of gift cards.....about $100 in gas cards and about $100 to Outback for he and his family!

My SIL is a real estate broker and so was my MIL for 10 years and their "tip" was their commission, which in NY is 6%. They were the ones who would then send an expensive gift basket to their client (the seller or the buyer) not the other way around. The BEST gift you can give is let them know that you will be telling all of your friends that if they need a realtor, you'll be giving their name - that's worth more than anything.

I agree with this. You could even ask her for some of her business cards to pass along to others.
