my son sat his intermidiate 2 english exam on friday . there was him and another pupil who needed a scribe. my son found it hard to concentrate on the paper due to the pupil dictating to the scribe. I know its not the other puplis fault but I am so angry with the school. :furious: How do they expect a pupil to concentrate with a conversation in the background. I have just sent them an email.. Not much good now to my son now the exam is over

Sorry that happened to you. My class had their SATS exams last week and our regulations state that any child who needs a scribe or reader has to be in a seperate room. I had 4 children in my class who needed 1:1 help so we had to use 4 rooms (our school is so small I had to use the heads office and evict her from it for an hour or 2 each day!!) I would ask the school to check the guidelines on 1:1 needs during exams.

But it may help if you need to appeal.

I would agree that you should appeal however, I assume that this is scotland so not sure of what intermidiate is, (GCSE or SATs Equlivent? :confused3 ) I know for our gcses that a person with such needs would sit the exam in a seperate room with some teacher obsevering.
Also your son may have done better than you thought.

Oh I hope so. he was so worried about this exam in the first place. my other son is at uni and he needs a scribe as he he broke neck is neck a couple of years ago playing sport and their rules state he must have a room to himself. have emailed the school !!

I not sure how different the Scottish system (apart from it is better than the English) is however I took my GCSE in maths last year and when I got my result there was some forms included in which you could appeal the result, however I would recommend that you contact the exam board before he gets the result so they don't just think that you are just unhappy about the results.

Anyway I wish him luck with this and the rest of the exams. :wizard:

here in Ireland
my son got a room of his own as he as dyslexia

I would find out now about the room as I am sure he will be sitting more exams

Good Luck :wizard: , and tell him not to be worrying about exams , to do his best
Life is too short :cheer2:

school has just been on . they were short of invidulators !
That's disgraceful!
Have they made any guarantee that this won't happen in future exams?

I wanted to reply to the thread yesterday when I read your post but wanted to check with my mum first about the rules. She's been an invigilator for years at our local school and she says that everyone who requires a scribe must have their own room - the school saying they didn't have enough inivigilators is totally unaccptable as invigilators are all in place for weeks before the exams begin with the exam timetable all planned out and there should always be some who are on standby in case of shortages at the last minute. She said the SQA would 'go bananas' if they knew that this had happened.

She also said that a note should have been added to his exam script explaining the circumstances of the two boys being in the same room. Not sure if this can be done now that the exam is over - but it's worth asking to speak to the Chief Invigilator in the school - who is employed by the SQA not the school. She is responsible for the allocation of Invigilators to each exam room - and tell her you are not happy with the situation to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Sorry seemed to have rambled on a bit there.....

my husband knows someone in the SQA and is going to phone tomorrow. the school approached the invidulator and they said my son never complained :furious: and appeared to have his head down writing duh :furious: how would he have known otherwise. the scribe did admit that half way through my son asked if he could put his hearing aids off as he was getting distracted but she obviously didn't have the common sense to twig it was putting him off.
Cath do you know if it would then be the schools fault for not ordering enough or the SQA for running short. the school just said there was a shortage of invidulators :confused3
