So..am I foolishly too old?

So sorry, but boo, hiss...we're older than many of you are and love the resorts, love DVC (even with its "warts"). We pay cash and would be going on vacation there anyway. We watch the market and buy and sell as we desire. Our son (30) and wife of one year also love DVC and Disney. Our son has been doing this at OKW since 1996. I can't imagine not being part of DVC and we are waiting...for grandkids! We're all going to be there for Halloween this year! Goodness, you can't take it with you!

What does this have to do with anything I said? Nobody is suggesting you can't go to Disney because you are old. There are other ways to stay in the same hotel rooms without purchasing DVC. In fact, if you run the numbers, maybe the better bet would be to take the money you would have spent on DVC, and go on 10 much larger and extravagant trips. As you said, you can't take it with you. So why spend your money on 20 years of DVC that you likely will never use.

We were 52 when we bought on first resale DVC contract. Ten years later we now have 6 total contracts.
We enjoy our timeshare when we go ourselves just as much as when we bring the GC. With Magical Express and the ease of airline baggage checkin we can see ourselves travelling to Disney well into our 80's even if we don't go to the theme parks.
We bought when we were 52 also; now we're 60, looking for more points and can't wait to extend our DVC usage in retirement.
I agree that DME and improved WDW Transportation on property, make it easy to navigate.
Our GCs are young, and we look forward to many trips with them. Would be cool if I'm still going to DVC when we're 102 ! :)

At the risk of going off topic, reading all these posts makes me wonder how old everybody is when they first purchase into DVC (whether direct or resale). Guess need to start a new thread on that. This thread makes me feel like just the older population owns in DVC, unless they are the only one piping in to answer the OP due to the nature of the question.

As for buying at older age, when I read the title, I was expecting OP in say s/he is in the late 60's or early 70's or something like that. When OP mentioned in the 50's, it made me chuckle as I thought that's still way young enough. As others said, if you are older, what does it matter, if you can afford it, and enjoy it, than might as well do it!!!

Edit to add: Okay, I did a search, and found a thread that answer my own question: https://www.disboards.com/threads/when-you-first-bought-dvc.3680222/
Guess I don't have to wonder anymore...

We were 29 when we bought in 3 years ago.
:)

Look all the time to add-on but I'm still getting the hang of use years and changing trip dynamics. Our next trip is 2 nights 1 bedroom BCV, then 3 day cruise on the Dream, followed by 5 days AKV. Yep see how I make a mess of things.

If you'll use the points or can figure out how to use them within banking and borrowing, then an add on could make sense. I will say though that I was very surprised by the 7 month availability for the end of January 2020. Ouch.

I'm 62, bought my first contract when I was 50. I'm still going every year, sometimes solo. I also wish I had bought earlier, if you can afford it and you love going to WDW for vacation. Go for it!
