~Snowbird Chat 2~

well I am glad I did book our airfare when I did... just check again this morning hoping they would have dropped their rates because SW is having a good sale... but no...in fact the Saturday flight went up by $45 a person.... I had a feeling that one would be the problem....

Good for you!! It is just a mess!

Hey Snowbirds...looking for some help. My nephew just received orders to Moron AB, Spain. It is a two year assignment and they are excited to go. They go in November. They have a daughter in second grade and a two year old. Here is the problem and what I need help with. It is a very small base. They only provide schooling for k-2. So next year my niece will have to home school Emma. The only other option is for her to be transported to a navy base which is an 1 hour and 35 minute drive each way every day....

So my question is do any of you home school? Are there programs that you recommend? We googled it and there are a ton out there...
thanks

Hey Wendy~ we do! What grade is she going to be in? I am assuming 3rd or higher so, my recommendations will be for upper elem/early Jr High...for core things like Math, English, spelling and Vocab...one of the Curriculums I reaaaaally like is Rod & Staff...If she wants something a little less heavy, but still rule following, go to the Queen Homeschool site.... for math, I really like Rod and Staff or if she wants a computer based math that does the majority of the teaching for her, she needs to look at Teaching Textbooks~and they have placement tests on their site... If she wants to email me and ask me any questions just PM me for my email if you need it....there is a lot to choose from and many people have varied preferences on what is important to them...
Tell her that she doesn't need to be discouraged at all~it's very very doable and she will always treasure the times that they did school together...it goes by so fast~as you know!!

As for school...my oldest starts his Senior year, and my younger son starts his Freshman year at our local Christian High School tomorrow.....we went today for locker assignment, teacher meet & greet and yearbook photos...it was a fun afternoon and they are very ready for tomorrow..:cheer2: I am glad they are not dreading it! My middle one only goes part time ( I think I already told y'all that) for Math and Sciences, the other stuff we are still doing through Homeschool...and dd is in 5th..we are already in our 5th week!!! Moving right along!!!! I am not sure, but my younger son may be able to graduate a year earlier than we expected...will need to get with his advisor next semester and look at what credits we have left after next semester....wooo hoooo!!!!

Hi everyone! It feels like it's been forever since I've logged in!!! Blame it on the usual post Disney blues :( We've been keeping busy this summer! How is everyone? Hopefully I haven't missed too much!

aaahhhh...we have had some awesome storms this afternoon/evening!! Lots of lightning and it's bringing in an August front!!:cool1::cool1::cool1: Y'all know how hot we get down here..ANYTHING that says front is welcomed! We should hit 69* for tomorrow nights low....It was nice to see the wind whipping and the rain pelting down this afternoon...the sky was an awesome creepy blue and grey...crazy how just that color alerts something in your brain and you know it's a good thing!!! Well..just wanted to post that good news!:rotfl2:

Shawna - you guys really should do an Alaskan cruise! The highs are only going to be in the low 60s! It would be a nice change for you! ;)

We're almost all packed for our trip. Did some laundry today -well, really Sarah did it - washed all the sheets! She's getting so big and helpful!
Tomorrow is the last of laundry and towels. Then do a quick run with the vacuum. Sarah gets the last of her braces off tomorrow!

Super busy at work, trying to get it all done before we leave is awful!

Friday from 5-7 the girls have their dance auditions for competition - please say an extra prayer! We will find out if they make it by email on Saturday or Sunday - so we want good news before we cruise!

I will be mostly off line for the next couple weeks. Especially while on the cruise. But don't worry, I'll check in when we get back on dry land and in the US!

Thank you.... third grade is correct.... They are still sorting out all the information on the transfer... you usually have alittle more time than 2 months.... I will forward your info on to her though...

Sheree~you are a busy little bee!! I am so excited for Sarah to get the rest of the braces off!! I know she is ready...and I will be praying for the girls to have a great time dancing Friday night!!! I would love to take and Alaskan cruise~not sure if Mike is up for it or not!:lmao: Are you flying to the West Coast? I can't remember....

Well the braces are OFF! She looks awesome! Her retainer was not fitted right, so they had to take another mold and remake it. She was so upset, because that's what she was looking forward to most! She cried about it! We have to wait until we get back to get it now.

Just finishing up the last of the :laundy:
Half day of work tomorrow!

Really should go to bed soon!

poor Sarah!! I hate getting those molds made! YUCK!! Well...she has something to look forward to when you get home!! I can't believe it's time for you to travel again!!!!!! I mean..it's really here!!! And I know you have things to do to finish packing and all..your departure morning will be here in like,...5 minutes!!:rotfl2:

I am at the 3 month mark today:hourglass !!!!woooohoooo
:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: It is still a while to go.... but my kids are officially all back in school, and we are having a bit of fall like weather ( it's a trick, I know!!) but local schools start in less than 2 weeks, so I know it's getting closer!!

thanks for the info on home schooling... seems that their original sponsor was an airman who had no children and didn't know much about the schools. There is a school on base. It is k-8. There are a total of 35 students... the second and third grade are taught together and currently there are 9 students. Spanish classes are part of the curriculum. They are excited about going.... I guess that means I get to see Spain next year!

Hey girls!! I bought our airfare this morning! my ticker is over halfway and we are ending summer! :cheer2: As y'all know, I reaaaaally don't like summer!! Not here anyway...thank goodness it hasn't been as unbearable as summer before last, but hot and humid no less....we were sitting in church Sunday and were talking about next Sunday being September...after that we will all be getting in football season at school and holiday season creeping up and the year will be over...2013 has went quickly!!
How was the first day of school for all of you that went back?

Madison doesn't start school until September 5th! They have locker move in night on the 3rd which is great because the amount of school supplies is ridiculous! She got her schedule on Saturday and she spent the afternoon calling all of her friends. There are some classes where she won't have any elementary school friends (that we know of) but she said she'll just make new ones. Love that she is so independent and not shy like I was.

Cole started his speech therapy yesterday and we had another session today. He did have a little meltdown, but that's to be expected. He is only 2!

Hey Snowbirds! :goodvibes We just got back yesterday from WDW. We had a great stay at the YC! So hard to get back to reality now. DS11's middle school open house is tonight. We start back to school next Tuesday, Sept 3.

Welcome back! Glad you had a good trip - did you have Magic Bands & FP+?

It's bittersweet to read all about your kids going back to school. I haven't done that since D graduated from college! Where did that time go? :sad2: But she's happy, doing what she loves, and has become a terrific adult. I love the relationship we have now. I guess every stage has its plusses and minuses.

And, the big news, ladies, is that I have also signed up to be a travel agent! I'll be starting the Disney training in the next few days and I'm so excited to begin! :dance3:It's scary, though, the thought of building a clientele. But we'll see what happens. Wish me luck!

Welcome to the wonderful world of being a TA! I know the DIS blocks the names of agencies on here, but I'd love to know who you signed up under. I wish you the best of luck!!!

Yes, we had the MagicBands and the FP+!! And it was a good thing. It was crowded! :faint: We have gone the last week of August before (this week) and the place was nearly empty. We had to go a week earlier this time because DS14 has Freshmen Orientation this week, and it was a lot more crowded than I expected! :sad2: Hot too! :scared1:

But we made the most of it and had a great time!

Congrats on becoming a TA!! I started in March and finally have some clients traveling this month and next. So I will finally start getting paid for all my work!!

snykymom~you are going to love it!! I started my courses in April and booked my first family in May..they leave the end of September/October!! They were my first booking~their packet came in this weekend..cant wait for them to go...their kids are going to love it! And they are at the Poly so I know they are going to have a great family getaway!!
