Snow White

I'm torn on remakes in general. On the one hand, I dislike the replacement of the original animated classics, but on the other hand, I can kind of compare it to a new cast putting on an old play, which has always happened and always been considered OK.

I looked up a list of Disney remakes, and these are my movie-specific opinions:
  • 101 Dalmatians – Loved the original, saw the remake - guess I liked it, because…puppies, but really didn’t need it.
  • Aladdin – Loved the original, didn’t see the remake.
  • Alice in Wonderland – Loved the original and some earlier remakes, hated the new dark ones with Johnny Depp.
  • Beauty and the Beast – Liked the original best, but enjoyed the remake too because I love Emma Watson.
  • Cinderella – Liked the original, don’t remember whether I saw the remake or not.
  • Dumbo – Hated the original, never saw the remake.
  • Lady and the Tramp – Loved the original, never saw the remake.
  • Mulan – Loved the original, think I saw the remake.
  • Pinocchio – Not a huge fan of the original, never saw the remake.
  • The Hunchback of Notre Dame – Liked the original, never saw the remake.
  • The Jungle Book – Liked the original, never saw the remake.
  • The Lion King – Loved the original, never saw the remake.
  • The Little Mermaid – Loved the original, never saw the remake.
I’ve also watched Cruella and Maleficent, and liked both – but I see them as character backstories, not remakes.

OK, I didn't know all the remakes. Here's my thoughts:

  • 101 Dalmatians – Liked original, thought remake was good enough to watch again
  • Aladdin – Liked original, wasn't interested in seeing remake (wasn't sure I'd like Genie)
  • Alice in Wonderland – Liked original, though remake(s) were OK, but a different feel, a bit creepy
  • Beauty and the Beast – Original OK, didn't like remake, I thought Emma Watson wasn't right for the part
  • Cinderella – Liked both original and remake
  • Dumbo – Original OK, like Alice I thought remake would be too dark so didn't see
  • Lady and the Tramp – Enjoyed original, didn't know there was a remake.
  • Mulan – Didn't really like original, so didn't watch remake
  • Pinocchio – Liked original, didn't know there was a remake.
  • The Hunchback of Notre Dame – Didn't see either.
  • The Jungle Book – Original enjoyable, didn't see remake.
  • The Lion King – Original good, didn't like remake.
  • The Little Mermaid – Good original, didn't see remake.
Seen Cruella and Maleficent, and thought they were both interesting additions to the original stories, but not really remakes.

I love a movie and I love a Princess so we will definitely be seeing it. I'll reserve judgement until after we watch. I think the girl playing Snow has a beautiful voice and the movie itself looks very pretty (minus the scary dwarves lol).

What do we want, 200 Princesses. Disney makes franchises and builds off the franchise in the parks and marketing. It is a system that works. Everyone loves to complain about Disney movies but they consistently are the top movie producer every year. There is also no one close in copyright royalties. And guess what everyone else does the same thing. How many Ice Ages are out there or Mission Impossibles (talk about a bad sequel) are out there. Snow White will probably not do as well because the ones that do the best are the ones that genzers watched as kids. But once you add all the international sales and streaming revenue it will do fine.

And this actress everyone is bagging on is a major talent. She is not someone's relative, she earned it the hard way, with auditions.

mission impossible I won't speak to-i could not make it through the 1st (loved the TV show though), that said....my kids are of the age that I lived through watching (and rewatching again and again) the ice age movies as well as the land before times, shreks, toy storys and a myriad of others. were they good? in my eyes some were o.k., most decreased in entertainment and production value with each subsequent release but the difference I see between those and 'disney's snow white' is they WERE sequels not remakes. if something is a remake I am going to compare it to the original ESP. if the remake is being marketed as being made by the originator. it is absolute apples to apples for comparing and the reviews on the trailer alone as it pertains to the animation quality speak volumes-millions of dislikes.

I will stick with walt disney's snow white.

I liked the Maleficent and Cruella origin story movies, but I would have liked them more if they stayed true and were actually evil.

Yeah, I really though it would be impossible to do a character rehab on Cruella of all people, but that movie is actually pretty good!

I've been boycotting the live action remakes on principle. One, I don't like that Disney is continuing to remake stories where good movies already exist instead of promoting original ideas and new creators. And two, I hate the idea that animation can't be taken seriously, and stories need a live action version to draw in adults.

It's clearly not working, since they are making a ton of money despite being creatively bankrupt. But it encourages me to go watch other original ideas.

100% agree with this. The director for the HTTYD remake said this as one of the reasons why the live action version exists and I find that so disrespectful towards the original movie AND animation as a whole.

Just curious, do these movies ever make money for Disney or are they a loss?

Many of them have done exceedingly well. There have been a few duds though. They keep making them because there is money in it. Beauty and the Beast and Lion King remakes both made more than $1B in box office revenue.

I'll be seeing it. I like to form my own opinions on the live remakes. I love Snow White in general. DH has an issue with her being darker than one would expect. Recently after thinking about this I had seen a comparison image that had her and the animation image together. She was seemingly a match for facial features. Given the recent actresses if they were making it regardless I'm okay with her. I do like her in general as well. The whole dwarfs issue I know had started due to Peter Dinklage speaking up but I'm conflicted on that myself; stereotypical vs casting actors that have that distinction. I have the same conflicts for wheelchair bound characters etc as well.

One problem I had with the animated version -- Snow White's voice was just too squeaky. Rachel Zegler's voice is wonderful. Yes, her ethnicity was more suitable for her role of Maria in West Side Story, but I'll go see Snow White just to hear Rachel sing. Gal Gadot is also great as Wonder Woman or the evil queen.

I so plan to see this one because I love these movies. It will be my second watch of a remake. I saw Beauty and the Beast and it was good. I generally just stick with the originals.

I don't care if she is 'darker' or if she is purple or bright orange. The fact that she is a miserable excuse for a human being is why I will most likely not see it.

watching the Waiting on a Wish video it seems the theme is young motivated female similar to Frozen, Encanto, Mermaid, Moana or Beauty and the Beast. That formulae always works, I will bet this film does a lot better than anyone is predicting
