Snow tire dilemma

It really does depend on the vehicle. My Saturn SC2 has performance radials and, although they perform well on wet and dry pavement, I have a hard time keeping the car from slipping off the road when we get a lot of snow. I need something to churn through the piles of snow that seem to accumulate on the side streets.

I suppose that it is not fair to compare performance radials to all-season radials, and that may be the root cause of my difficulties in snow. But I swear by my Blizzaks.

IAs far as all season tires go, I purchased a set of Assurance Triple-Tread tires for our minivan this past June. I am actually looking forward to see how well they handle our NE Ohio snow and ice. The ride quite nicely, aren't too noisy, and they are very highly rated for snow/rain/ice/dry pavement. And the treadwear rating is decent too. They seem like the perfect tire for those who drive in varying weather conditions.

Excellent choice, John. ;) :teeth:

I've also only ever had all-season tires on my vehicles and they've always worked fine (and yeah, we get "real" snow). :)

Snow tires?? I didn't even think they made those anymore...I can remember my dad putting them on his car in the late 60's but I didn't think anyone did that anymore since radial tires came about....

you were faster than me. I had exactly the same thought. I haven't heard of snow tires in years

snow tires are making a comeback, because studies have shown that all season tires do not perform as well,

I also have used nothing but all season tires for the past 30 years, but this year I bought a set of wheels and Blizzak snow tires from a member of my car club, the reason being my Chrysler 300M Special came with 18" high performance summer tires, my options were to buy high performance all season tires at 200-300 dollars a piece, or buy a second set of wheels and snow tires for 300,,,it will actually be cheaper for me to run snow tires in the winter and stick with the summer tires for good weather, than it would to buy a set of all season high performance tires...plus I actually have the best tires for each condition that way...

Just wanted to say thanks to all of you for the info. I was actually pleasantly surprised at all the responses. :sunny:

They do make and sell snow tires BTW.
We bought ours after we moved here last year at Sam's Club and there was alot of other people putting them on too. We had to wait quite a while.

I don't know if the snow tires we got are any better than all season, but you have to understand that coming from sunny CA. I wanted anything that I thought would help even the tiniest bit!! :goodvibes And Sam's will put them on for free and then change em out again in the Spring for free so it was no big deal.

Still not sure if we'll put em on before we leave for WDW or not. Got some differing views on that. Guess it depends on what the weather does around here.

We woke up to about a foot of snow this morning. DH got stuck in the driveway. We have an old (1996) mini-van so no 4 wheel drive for us. We had a relative plowing us last year but don't think that's gonna work out this year. Guess it's time to go buy a snowblower too.

Anyways thanks again!!
