Snow shoes for walking on glaciers?

I think the question says it all. what is the best footwear for glacier trips? is it worth the space to bring clunky snow boots?

We've done several glacier excursions over the years and always just worn water proof (or at least water resistant) hiking boots/shoes - something we normally pack anyway. But I've seen plenty of folks (especially kids) in just tennis shoes, though in that scenario I'd recommend throwing in an extra pair of socks in the backpack to change afterward. It's also been our experience if special cold weather gear is required beyond what they reasonably expect travelers to have with them, most tour operators will supply it or at least warn you ahead of time.

I packed my snow boots for our walk about on the mendenhall glacier and wish I hadn't... they had boots for us all which their clamps fit on already. I didn't end up needing the huge things that I lovingly devoted luggage space to - I should have just worn my other shoes. I'd contact the tour operator and ask what they provide unless you are doing it on your own.

probably on my own, but I wear size 14:crazy2:, so I can't count on others having what I need anyway:confused3

Ahhh, in that case at least sturdy hiking boots with warm socks - if you get particularly cold then maybe snow boots but I don't think they are as comfortable personally. I got pretty warm hiking around... they had crampons for all of us - you'll want some kind of traction cleats on your shoes for sure since you'd be walking on ice if you make it to the glacier. Full on crampons might be overkill (they had HUGE spikes!) but I have a pair of yaktrax that I use for our winters here that are tiny studs. Any brand would work of course - its amazing how much better I hup on ice with them over my shoes.

Do the excursions not provide boots anymore? We went on a glacier helicopter tour in Juneau many, many years ago...In 1995. We were given boots with deep treads to change into before we boarded the helicopter. I don't think most people pack snow boots on a cruise. We certainly didn't.
