Snorkling on CC

I thought I saw a post last week, but cannot find it now, that stated that if you bring your own mask and snorkel, that the yellow vests were available on the beach. Did I read that right? I'm thinking of buying our own snorkeling equipment, but don't want to lug a vest along, if they are available to guests on the beach. Thanks for your help!

The snorkeling vests at Castaway Cay are free and mandatory if you are snorkeling -- even if on the adult beach [at the adult beach you can get them from the lifeguard stand]. You dont have to inflate them if you don;t want to, but you do have to wear it while snorkeling.

Yes, you must wear the yellow inflatable vest supplied by Disney while snorkeling. No charge for them, and you don't have to inflate them, just wear them. They want you to be visible.

The distance to many of the buried items that are hidden out in the snorkeling lagoon, marked by buouys, was farther out than I expected. I had also brought my own mask and snorkel. While I did make it out there and see all the things, I regretted not having flippers on. Something to consider if bringing your own gear.

As panda123 mentioned- the fun stuff is out there. Highly recommend flippers.

Agree with above that the sunken mice and cool objects are a ways out there, marked by nautical balloons. I found that inflating the vest, while restricting your diving ability, gives you a chance to float and catch your breath since there is nothing to stand on or hold on to. Be sure to take a waterproof camera with you. We take our own gear except for fins...never use them. There are a couple of sand bars on the way out that you can stand on, but most of the prime area is over your head.

If you are so inclined, the inflatable vest can be inflated and the deflated and then re-inflated again. There is a a vent to release the air and then a tube to re inflate, so I would remove the air, dive down, look around, surface, re inflate and then swim to the next spot.

As mentioned by a different poster, the fins would have helped a lot. My teen-aged sons had the flippers and I did not, so I took me some doing to keep up with them.
