I have never been snorkeling. I think I read somewhere that they give demonstrations in the pool on the ship. Is this correct?

Yes they do, however I can't remember what day it was, it was in the Goofy Pool, check your Navigator daily to see a time frame for the demonstration.. Hope this helps..

Dont worry about being able to do it.
If you can swim then you can snorkel.
My DS(10) learned it in 10 minutes and had a the greatest time of his life watching all the sea creatures in the lagoon. May I suggest you wear a water proof sunscreen SPF45 and a white T shirt to prevent sunburn.

What if I can't swim?? Can I still snorkel?? How far do you go out? I thought you don't completely go under, I'm not nervous underwater, and can probably get from one end of pool to the other end doing frantic movement.

I really reccomend being at least a fair swimmer before trying snorkeling. Perhaps talking to someone you know that does snorkel can give you an idea what it is all about. You dont have to snorkel in water over your head but then you are limiting yourself on the experience

DCL as well as others recommend:
Only one or two puffs of air into your vest - you'll roll over like a dog on a carpet if it's fuller. lol
Dishwasing liquid (or baby oil) on the inside of your mask (only a tiny bit!) - this will make the water bead off and make it easier to see.
Just float and kick from your hips. Don't flail your legs, you'll scare the fish away.

Kim is right, it really isnt that hard, you do get get a flotation vest to assist in buoyancy. It is however not meant to be a life preserver and that is why i reccomend being a fair swimmer, or better. If you plan on getting in 'over you head' then you need to be comfortable as a swimmer because while you are snorkeling along sometimes the depth of the water can be hard to gauge
for a novice. This is really a great activity(sport) and especially if you are going on a seven day western cruise there are many oppotunities to snorkel. The gear you can rent at Castawat Cay
is adequate but not great. I dont have any info on the quality of the gear availible at other destinations. Have a great weeekend!
