SNL 50th Should Be Epic!

I agree, especially McCartney, whose voice was very weak. But I’m glad they let him perform as scheduled, despite going overtime. Both of those guys are in their 80’s now, but are legends and deserve the recognition.

The film with John Belushi at the cemetery was eerie and a weird choice, IMO. I feel like they could have done more to honor those who have passed, including Belushi, Gilda Radner, and Phil Hartman, who got only a very brief clip. Steve Martin alluded to it in an intro that turned out instead to be about sketches that haven’t aged well.

Seems like Dan Aykroyd was the only surviving original cast member who didn’t attend.
Yes,the In Memoriam thing was very weird.

Still shocked Belushi,Radner,Hartman and Farley didn't get a full dedicated highlight segment.

And I thought the original Not Ready For Primetime Players in attendance should have been alone together on stage at the start of the show.

Was a let down for me overall (I have watched from beginning although less in years my kids were younger). Sad to see so much of the origin material left out, sad to see bad singing when they had so many choices, sad to see actors in the audience who were important to the show left out but some who you have to google to see if they were ever on it included. Some skits were good, some just plain flat.

Highlights ~ Was so excited to see Mike Myers Linda back, didn't miss a beat in time. / Hysterical laughing at Kate McKinnon and the alien skit, they were all priceless! / So happy to see Eddie Murphy back and given a few skits, always missed him. He nailed it. And Eddie as Tracy with Tracy standing next to him. / Never was a Will Ferrell fan when he was on the show but he has grown on me, glad to see him back being his quirky self. I lost it on his prisoner skit. / Adam Sandler singing, brings back memories. / Debbie Downer skit made me miss the Wendy Whiner skits .... then when I googled it Drew was on episode when Whiners were adopting her. Nice circle.

I think that the show was what it should have been - just an extra long episode with some sketches that incorporate the past. I don't think it needed to be a full-on honorarium or whatever. That said, I didn't love some of the choices that they made. The musical guests were flat - then again, that's mostly true of the actual show. A lot of it wasn't that good - then again, that's mostlu true of the actual show. So, maybe it really was a fitting tribute.

Highlights for me - Bill Murray ranking the update hosts. Then in the NYC sketch when ScarJo comes out with a black eye. "Oh my God, who hit you - Colin?" "No, not this time." 🤣

Man, they are just all in on that bridesmaids singing about Domingo, ain't they? That is a classic example of hitting that well too often too soon. They did the same with Kat's alien abduction sketches. The first one was funny. The rest were all too samey-same. At least for this show it had been a while.

Overall I enjoyed it quite a bit. I will have to go back and watch it again, or at least last part. I was so tired last night, I barely made it to the end. I had several LOL moments during the show. I would have loved to seen more vintage stuff replayed. I didn't really pay much attention to the red carpet portion, so I may have missed some faces. I was really hoping to see Chevy Chase, and I missed seeing Kevin Nealon too. I did learn that Jan Hooks is deceased, that was sad. It's been like 10 years, I don't know how I missed hearing about that. Nothing can be perfect, could have been better, but I think they did a really good job and made it a worthwhile experience.

I liked it overall. I can't say that I remember that much about the 40th anniversary, but maybe a lot of those things that y'all are saying were missing (or should have been done) last night, were things they did on the 40th special? :confused3

I would've bet money as soon as I heard Paul performing Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End, that they would've then shown that clip of Chris Farley asking him if the last line in The End was true. :rotfl:I was wrong, though.

I couldn't agree more!

Well, I'm 67, and that sketch is what a lot of us who were fans of SNL at the beginning thing of as the kind of off the wall, funky stuff they used to do. So for me, I would expect that to be in the show. But other than a few seconds of video, the Bass O Matic spook commercial was a glaring omission.

I don't remember seeing Chevy Chase, Dan Ackroyd, Jane Curtain, or Dana Carvey last night. Were they there and perhaps I just missed them?

Dan Ackroyd declined to attend. Chevy Chase & Jane Curtain were there, but not in skits, not sure if that was their choice or not. My husband said they were on the red carpet. I don’t know if Dana Carvey was there or not.

This article seems to pinpoint the problem with the show that a lot of folks had with it.

USA was right...no sparkle... but I thought NYC was good... having been in the square and Easter egg opportunities

But my take away was that editor Michaels thought he was Ben Bradlee and was going to open the barn door...and Lorene would march into journalism history

I guess that's how I missed Chevy Chase, I wasn't paying really close attention to the red carpet portion.

I’m not that much younger and also have watched from the beginning. I get what you’re saying, but still think it was odd and inappropriate to show Belushi like that. The show has always had some edgy elements, which to me, have always been hit or miss, with some parts hilarious, other parts not funny at all, and some real cringeworthy. Obviously people’s sense of humor can be different. For example, I know many who loved Mr. Bill in the early years. I thought it was so stupid. And some sketches just got old with repetition, like Dan A. doing Julia Child with all the blood.

The show has had some good years, and some not so good. To be honest, I haven’t watched much in the last two decades or so, and most I’ve seen has been mediocre. I had never seen last night’s Kristen Wiig sketch before, and DH and I commented that anyone under the age of 50 probably has no clue who Lawrence Welk was (or Robert Goulet).

LOL. I was VERY disappointed that other than a quick photo of Mr. Bill that they didn't pull one of those segments. That, and Julia Child both are CLASSIC SNL from it's good years. Lawrence Welk is still on every week on PBS, and my kids, who are 34 and 38 certainly know who he is. However, the Welk sketch was pretty bad. No idea why they bothered with the Kristen Wiig sketch either.
There was more than one past cast member I either did not recognize, or were only on for a season or two. I did tune back in starting this season, for two reasons. First, I am on the West Coast and they now air SNL Live at 830 pm live off the east coast feed, as well as at 11:30 pm. Second, because I wanted to see how they dealt with current events. Given the bumper crop of material, they frequently have fallen short this season.
Fun trivia from Weekend Update, that Michael Chee is the longest running anchor of that segment. I still think of him as a new guy. And Keenan Thompson, at 22 years, is the cast member who has been on the show longer than any other cast member. He wasn't even born when the show went on. He is a familiar face in our household since my kids grew up watching him on "All That" and "Keenan and Kel"

I thought it was a great show with lots of great skits. It wasn't supposed to be let's look at all the great sketches from the last 50 years, it was an extended version on the weekly show with some old stuff thrown in.

And it certainly wasn't. The 40th (after watching many clips this afternoon) was awesome. And yes, they should stick with doing the weekly with a memory "segment" as they have been. :thumbsup2
