We were coming home from a wonderful dinner on Saturday night with friends of ours. We get to where I need to turn to get home and there is an ambulance blocking the way. I go around. We stop a teenager and ask what happened, as there are also a lot of cops around. She says that there is a sniper and they've told everyone to get out of the neighborhood.
We need to get home. My sister is watching our kids. We don't know, at this point if they heard shots or not.
We traversed around multiple blocks and finally parked at our house.
It turns out that some nut case, who lives 1/2 block from us, was arrested for DUI earlier in the day and so he decided that he was going to start shooting his gun within the city limits. He actually asked the cops who booked him what would happen if he did, and if it was a per incident or per bullet offense.
He finally told the cops that he was kidding and they released him. There was a 4 hour standoff that started right after we left for dinner. No one heard a thing in our house and everyone was safe. They thought it was an accident, too, since they heard the sirens.
So, my sister, who was sleeping over, decided not to sleep in the guest room, but in my DS's room. She used the excuse that she wanted to try out his new bed.
When I saw who it was the next day on the news, I told my DH that I always thought that guy had a few screws loose as I used to walk by him every day when he was out with his dog when I walked to work.
