Snake in Resort Room?

Why did I read this thread? OMG! I hate them so much and now I will not be able to sleep or walk around during my trip!

Friends of ours stayed at CR last fall and the same thing happened to them. We were at the pool at our resort when my friend called to tell me that a maintenance man was in their room removing a water moccasin.They were also on the 4th floor, their DD12 was in the bed sick with a stomach virus and saw the snake at the top of their curtains. They called the front desk and someone came up to remove the snake. They were then moved to a concierge suite. Wonder what it is about those 4th floor curtains those snakes love so much??? And to think before that I thought all I had to worry about checking the room for was bed bugs and lice. Now my husband can make fun of me for not only checking the beds with a magnifying glass I bring from home (Totally neurotic- I know, I just can't help it!) But now he just shakes his head as I check the room for snakes and throw pillows at the curtains from across the room to make sure nothing slithers out! Ahh if I could only go back to the days where all I searched for was hidden Mickeys!

Someone has to know how these snakes get in the rooms. I am about to cancel my trip. I feel like I have to go and be so unnerved the whole time I am there. I will be checking every where to make sure there aren't snakes and miss my whole vacation. Unless you have an over the edge phobia of them you just can't even understand. There are things I do not do with my family here where I live because of the fear of seeing a snake. Here will be my vacation at DW
Afraid I will have a stroke on certain rides like Star Tours, Rockin Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror, Thrill rides in general.
Terrified of Heights so that pretty much puts out all of the thrill rides and anything else over 8 feet high. ( I won't get on a ladder. That should explain my fear)
I am afraid of water so I don't want to do the water parks or the pool for fear of drowning, plus now the snakes.
Can't ride splash Mt for fear of heights, stroke and snakes.
Worried I will over eat and gain the weight back I lost before we go
Now I am afraid of the snakes at the resort, in the parks, at Flame Tree Bar bQ now that someone saw one there.
I was totally unaware that snakes got used to noice and people.
Really I should stay home. Would I look bizzare in a giant hampter ball rolling around at Disney?

I hate snakes - I even hate worms! I can handle seeing them outside as long as I leave them alone and they leave me alone. But thinking about them being in my room or on my bed - no way, that I cannot handle. I'm scheduled to go to WDW this weekend and today am finding very little to be excited for:
Heat
Crowds
Hurricanes/Tropical storms
Air flights if a bad storm develops
Bed bugs
Lice
Snakes

I think Disney should be paying me to go! I'm leaning towards canceling. Some may think I'm worrying over nothing but....what is to get excited for? I like rides and I like Disney but ...

Snakes are apart of Florida, it's just that simple. Especially when there's water around which most of the resorts have, bottom line is there's snakes all over, not trying to creep anyone out or whatnot but they're everywhere. But the chances are seeing one are slim, but people have encountered them.

For every one person who sees a snake at WDW, there are thousands of others that dont. I would say definitely dont cancel your vacation just because you could be the one in thousands that does see one. That would be like not driving in your car because there was a one in thousands chance you would be the one to get into an accident. Go and have fun! (and just check your room periodically or have someone else check it)

P.S. I lived in middle florida for 30+ years and was around different bodies of water in different areas....I could count the number of times I've seen snakes both at disney and elsewhere around there in Florida on one hand, with fingers left over! So chances are you will never see one, especially if you still to the walkways at your resort and in your room. As for MK, epcot, HS and AK, the odds probably go up to like one in hundreds of thousands to seeing snakes there. Think of how many ppl go to disney PER DAY that never see a snake. Hundreds of thousands I am sure, and maybe once a week someone sees a snake? The odds would be in the billions.

There was an alligator at the Beach Club when I was there back in May...as long as people don't feed them, they'll just move along looking for better habitat.

Wow...I haven't seen any reports of anyone dying from a snake bite in Disney. Snakes have an important part to play in our ecosystem. Your only risk of being bit is if you mess with one or accidently step on one - you are not on their menu.
I love the little garter snakes I get around my house..they're really cute. I'm not crazy about the idea of venomous ones - but I will leave them alone..and if by chance I step on one and get bit, I am sure the medics will have the proper anti-venom for the local species and Disney will probably give me a free pass or something.
You all really need to calm down - if you live your life in fear of dying, you aren't really living! And...PS...you ARE going to die..eventually...

Guess the odds that my son was bitten by a water mocassin, without provoking it, while still standing on the sidewalk, puts us in the astronomical odds catagory. As for antivenin being handy, it took over 7 hours for them to administer it, each vial is made at the time needed, and at the cost of over $140,000 just for the antivenin. Almost three months later and he is having trouble writing in school because his fingers get stiff and sore so easily. Not only did we see the one, after it bit him, but the day we switched resorts, I saw two more in the lake. I guess I should have played the lottery that weekend.

I'm so sorry that happened to your son. I've been reading this thread for a while now - was worried after reading it before our April trip and stay at CBR and Pop after reading of many snake sightings there, and just returned from another trip this past week and was forever on the lookout for snakes.

Always really nervous about flower beds and mulch areas. I hate that you go to sit on a bench to relax, and then worry about what may be behind you in the flower bed or coming towards you through the grass. So far we have had snake-free trips, but am terrified at the thought of me or the kids getting bitten by one.
Can't believe it took so long for your son to receive antivenim. I hope that his current problems he is having as a result of this get better and go away. So scary how he was still on the sidewalk and got bitten.

Thanks Stitch. It was one of the scariest moments of my life. He is only 7 years old. He is an avid viewer of Animal Planet, so he knows a little of the danger when bitten by a venomous snake. He kept asking me if he was going to die!!! I was the only one able to ride in the ambulance, we flew to Disney so no car. I remember sitting in the ER thinking, "How do I call my husband to tell him our baby boy just died?" It was horrible!!! Thank God, he is alive and well and very much on the mend.

OMG!!! That is horrible...disturbing...and HORRIBLE!!! I could not imagine. I hate snakes, but I don't know what I would do if one bit my kid. Probably freak then rip it's discusting head off!

We were staying at the beach Club villas a week ago and saw a huge snake slithering in the grass near a ground floor room.

We had a 3rd floor room, my son was on the balcony and noticed it. The thing was big, at least 5 feet long, black in colour. I do not know my snakes so I have no idea what kind of snake this was.

We did think that we wouldn't have wanted a room on the main floor now.

Last year we were at Old Key West and had these frogs climbing on our door. I got close and one of the jumped .... scared the %#$& out of me.

I am sure there are many snakes and other creatures in Disney World .... as long as they stay outside I am ok.

The thing is people do not understand that this is a phobia and I am as afraid of snakes as I am heights. We already have a game plan for checking the room. I told the kids we couln't unpack anything until Daddy checks the entire room over thoroughly. I am glad that I know that I need to be on my guard. I would want to come home immediatley if I saw a snake anywhere. I am just praying I don't. It does make it had to unwind when you are there thinking about it.

Just back from a 9 day trip to WDW and I'm happy to report that I didn't see any snakes. We spent 5 days at ASMUS and 4 at WL. I did however, have an Opossum run across the sidwalk right in front of me at the ASMUS. Ugly little buggers. I have to say, I was more cautious that I have been in the past. Since there seems to be a mix of venomous and non-venomous, I'm not taking any chances since I would never be able to tell the difference.

To me it doesn't matter what kind they are in the snake category and that is enough for me.
Hoping not to see any Labor day week when we are there. My Dh will think I am awfully romantic all of a sudden if I do, when he can't pull me off of him!
