Snack foods in the house?

Do you keep snack foods in the house (cookies, chips, etc.) for your family even though you don't eat them? I just went thru my cabinets and fridge and tossed all the cookies, junk, etc. I can't believe the amount of junk we had, I'm actually embarassed by it   .

I obviously can't have them in the house b/c I have zero will power and my husband and three year old don't need the junk either.

Unfortunately, I have a roommate, so there are bad foods all around our kitchen. *cringe* A lot of it is stuff I don't like because I'm such a picky eater, but if she doesn't stop buying Tostitos, we're going to have a Serious Talk! ;)

Yes, I still have cookies, chips, chocolate, etc. in my kitchen. My DH and DD's don't really eat a lot of it, but I don't want to say that we can't have these types of food in the house. I figure that the lifestyle changes I have made are for a lifetime so at some point I am going to have to deal with the temptations, I might as well do it now!

no cookies, no cakes, no ice cream

I do keep no butter popcorn and lowfat granola bars in the house for myself - reg granola bars & buttered popcorn for my boys

Unfortunately DH, DD12 and DS6 have all that stuff in the house and I try really hard to get it out, but it always ends up back in the house with DH saying "but it was on sale".

I have tried to have healthier alternatives, even though when DH buys things he selectively forgets that I don't want "unhealthy" things in the house.

Its a slow torturous process, but slowly one day at a time he is learning. At least they eat my healthy whole wheat all natural bread and whole wheat pasta now.

Seriously, we have it all, but there's less than there was. When I'm buying for everyone else, I try to buy things I don't like, so that will help and I do plan in my own treats like kudos bars or rice crispy treats and of course my chips and salsa...so yes, we have them, and I just have to be careful!

BIG HUGE PROBLEM for me too

this is what I did after taking Dr. Phils no fail environment test and scoring a 13 where he recommends a 2. I had it all on a specific shelf in the pantry (snack shelf) and divided it, my stuff -- their stuff. well, their stuff just always looked so much better. Than I took to heart that I'm not really doing them any good letting them each so much junk, but I don't feel I need to get it totally out of the house b/c they are fine with their weight and I didn't want to make a huge issue with a pre-teen DD. So I bought a "washtub" thing at Meijer, open tub - no lid. I put all the "hard-core" junk -- i.e. chips, candy, cookies -- and took it down to our basement pantry. I said that's the junk food tub and you can have one snack per day from it.

Truthfully my DDs went almost a week before remembering it.

I also took to heart Dr. Phil saying once you stop eating the hard core junk so much you really do lose your taste for it. I nodded when I heard him say that (audiobook UWS) and thought if it is true for me it'll be true for them too. Outta sight -- outta mind and eventually they'll lose their taste for it as well.

NOTE: I did restock the snack shelf with more nutritional snacks, some a bit "junky" but not as bad -- i.e. trail mix, pudding cups, granola bars, applesauce tubes, peanut butter, crackers, graham crackers, marshmallows.

We keep the same stuff stocked in the house, however I have noticed since we started incorporating this low carb way of eating into our diets some things have started to change.

Today at the grocery store my 4 year old said "You don't have to look at the carbs on that box mommy!"

I am becoming much more conscious of what I buy for the kids. In fact usually I buy them candy for movie night every weekend, but I walked right past that stuff today. Told DD we could do without!

I think the snack cabinet right now is a pretty equal split between healthy and junk. Trying to move them slowly toward healthy.

I keep all the low carb snack foods in the house.

They are great, espcially for kids.

Yes and I even bake cookies atleast once a week for DH. I figure if it is a life change I need to figure out a way not to go overboard. I try to make sure I have a version for me in the house. If there is regular ice cream, then there is fat free ice cream for me. Chips are my downfall, so I do try to only keep plain tortilla chips in the house.

We do have some snack foods around - skinny husband and son eat it in moderation. I am OK as long as it is out of sight. Yesterday, though, I made cookies from some special nuts (ever hear of butternuts?) we bought at a farmer's market, and I ate not only some cookies but raw dough as well. So today I hid the cookies in the microwave and told the guys to eat them!

The packaged stuff rarely tempts me anymore. Yippee!

I still have cookies, ice cream etc. It doesn't bother me to buy it, or to know it's there. My downward spiral would start with my first bite. As long as I don't start I'll be okay.
