interesting....

.... i've used dotphoto for several years now and by casual comparison smugmug seems more sophisticated in some ways. While on others dotphoto seems to have a slight edge.

Dotphoto lets you resell your images with a subscription of $4.99-5.99-12.99. I've sold several hundred in images over the years. While smugmug requires a $149 annual fee. I could not tell whether the smugmug annual fees included any prints. The 4.99 monthly dotphoto fee included 25 4x6 and 5x 5x7 prints a month. if The 5.99 came with 50 4x6 prints. Shipping is extra and the prits have to be used within a year of being awarded. Where dotphoto is a pain (to me) is their storage limits. They used to have unlimited volume and duration... but that changed last year IF you were a reseller like me. They sell extratorage and have vague limits on time... it's become difficult to tell what the extended limits are... except annual additions of 1 gig are $20 a year. Sort of high if you ask me... so I've been interested in investigating alternatives.... :confused3

That does look cool. And helps bring people into your photos.

I am noticing my site has been sooo slow. It's been going on for a while now. I really hope it clears up the slow issues. :(

I like the changes. But it has been really slow for me too.

I see that several people have links to their SmugMug accounts. I have visited them and the SmugMug site. I am thinking about joining. Those of you that use it, how do you like it. I have used several photo sharing sites and I think I would like this one better. I read some of the testimonials on the site but I am curious as to what you "users" think...thanks:)

I use it. I even popped for the pro account.

If you like it after the free trial you can use this code EDfLfDAAygNVM to get $5 off. and I get a little somthin' from it as well.

I have been a member for maybe three years so I have not read the signup details lately.

But

THey offer unlimited storage. You are charged by the bandwidth used to upload, view and download. Which makes sense, memory is cheap. They have redundant servers for access and file backup so it is great for just that, offsite backup of photos.

You and others can buy pics right from the site. With my pro account (about $100 yearly?) I can set the prices for the photos. Anything over their cost of printing and shipping is your profit. I add 10 or 20 cents to the larger size and maybe 5 cents to a 4x6 and it adds up to offset the cost of the site. Of course you can set pro rates also.

I have it, and love it as well. I just have the lowest tier account, but will most likely upgrade to the pro site as well as soon as baseball season is over. I had commited to the team not to make any money off of the pics I have been taking this season....

i was thinking of doing what JR suggested for next season, and that would help pay for the cost of the site.

Another thought I had was if I am making money, then I can claim it as a business, and therefore write off the costs of any equipment I might buy to the extent I make any profit...

But if for nothing else it is worth the few bucks to me for the offsite storage.

I also have it and love it.

I am a preschool teacher and my aide and I take photos of the kiddos all the time. With smugmug I can password protect the gallery where I have the photos of my students.

Right now I have one gallery titled school that is password protected - then I made several subgalleries under that one - each subgallery is also password protected.

It seems to be a really safe place for me to post pics of my students and make them available to ONLY the people I want to see them.

I have it also- I like it a lot. I know I have emailed technical support with questions a few times and I have always gotten a response back very quickly. The people there are very friendly and helpful.

Question: Are Smugmug and Photobucket comparible? Why Smugmug over Photobucket?

Haven't you heard? All the cool kids upload to Smugmug, take pictures with a Canon and drive a Dodge. Join us, resistance is futile!

Make that a Saturn - and a Saturn minivan at that. :lmao:

I had a link to my site as well, but a moderator removed it and sent me a message explaining that since the pictures are available for purchase they consider it a commercial site. I just want to share them. I've never made any real money from it.

I have the plain account and love it. It's super easy to use with lots of nice extras in terms of the look of your different galleries.
