I've only been to Disney and Universal once so I can't speak from an in-person perspective, but I follow the news and happenings of the parks almost weekly through the Dis Unlimited show and similar content. I agree with those that have already said that anything new causes a spike in attendance. I'm honestly amazed that, as mentioned, something as trivial as a popcorn bucket will get people to stand in line for hours to get it.
As said here, the locals will swarm as soon as something is new, which is understandable, as it's one of the perk of them living in the area. More than that, with as expensive as the APs are now, those that have them need to justify that cost so a reason to visit the park translates to good value for that demographic.
A lightening lane and getting there early is probably your best bet. I hope you have a great time on your trip!
