Smoking Rooms and my complaint

Many smokers here in NC think it's their "right" to smoke. And it is. But it's my right not to. I personally thank you for being considerate.

Oh, Pam, I KNOW what you mean.

We were recently travelling through NC and ate at a Cracker Barrel. I had forgotten what state I was in and was complaining about the smoking section being so close to the non-smoking section. (In other words, unless the smoke is going out the window, the WHOLE place gets some smoke )

I commented to my DH about how now we are spoiled in NY and I wish every state was like NY. He said, "Honey, that will NEVER work down here.......you are in NORTH CAROLINA!" I had totally forgotten and said, yea, what was I thinking!! ( We lived in VA for a few years and had friends that would work summers in the tobacco fields in NC)

I don't think you'll ever see that happening - mainly because WDW has guests that come from all over the world and from countries that are not as adverse to smoking as people are in the U.S..

As we are so often reminded, WDW is a business and they are in business to make money.. They will attempt to accomodate everyone rather than cut out a certain percentage of their business..

Isn't the Grand Cal. (which has almost 800 rooms) owned by Disney and a business?? And I think they have foreigners there!

I don't think she said that smokers in general have to pay a higher rate...Just that they didn't have any of her room categories in smoking, so she would have to go up to a higher rate room category.

800 rooms is a drop in the bucket compared to all of the rooms in WDW and if I remember correctly, WDW gets a MUCH, MUCH larger portion of the foreign guests than CA..

I really wish they would not allow smoking on the balconies at the AKL!

Smoking is not allowed on any balconies at AKL. Apparently the rule is not being enforced.

After reading all the posts on this board I decided to call the WL and ask about smoking. They said there are smoking only in smoking rooms. I did not get into where they were located or what price range they were. When I asked her to check about the balconies, she said she would check and put me on hold for quite a while. When she came back she said something about the Florida Clean Air Act and you could only smoke in WDW outside in designated smoking areas. I asked her to confirm balconies and she said this was considered outside and you could only smoke there if it specified that this was a smoking section. I know everyone gets different answers from different CM's but this was the reponse I received from the WL directly. This is something I would check into next time I go down there.

Smoking is not a "right"! It is a privilege. Undeniably it causes damage, sometimes permanent. If a hotel wants to charge extra to compensate, it makes perfect sense to me. Personally, I think they would be shooting themselves in the foot, as I am sure some smokers would just sully non-smoking rooms, in order escape the extra cost.

I think cigarettes are nasty, but I don't think, like many seem to do, that since the fall of the USSR that smokers are now the enemy.

It is reasonable for a smoker to go outside so as not to bother a non-smoker.

It is unreasonable for anyone to fault you for going outside because the location you choose (balcony, etc.) is inconvinient for them.

Wow...I can't believe the WL does not have standard smoking rooms. If you want to have a smoking room you should not have to pay more. My parents both smoked until I was 7 or 8 and then quit. Now I can't stand cigarette smoke though. And I don't want DD breathing it - HOWEVER....people who smoke have rights too and having to pay more for a hotel room is not fair. I will chime in on people walking through crowds with lit cigarettes....that makes me CRAZY!! I do not want to be burned by a cigarette - more importantly I don't want my dd to be burned by a cigarette in a crowd. I realize most smokers are considerate....but you cannot be walking in a crowd with a lit cigarette and be considerate at the same time. There is just too much risk involved....and I think people care and just don't think that they could possibly hurt someone - but we have all seen the "cattle" crowds at WDW and it's just not worth it. Okay - sorry off my soapbox now...I know that that wasn't even mentioned in the original concern and back to that....I would definitely request a smoking room when you check in and good luck. I would be very upset if I was told my room was non-cafeine only and if I wanted to drink my Diet Dr. Pepper in the room I would have to pay more for it!!

For the first time I think I want to move to NC My boyfriend has been trying to get me to move there but I won't move far away from my family where we all live in NY, but since you can smoke in restaurants etc...I might have to think twice now

I'd never say never. My state of Kentucky, I'm willing to bet, has a higher percentage of smokers than anywhere, including NC. It no longer has the number of tobacco farmers it once had, but smoking is still a passion here. Yet Lexington recently passed a smoking ban in all restaurants and bars in its city limits. Louisville is now considering something similar. You never know.

I must say, I LOVE your state also. In spite of the smoking laws. DH and I would love to retire there someday, or Tenn. Absolutely beautiful part of the country!

And NY's non-smoking law is one of the few things I really love about NY. It certainly isn't the TAX LAW!!
