Amen to that. And notice how it's never THEIR family who does something obnoxious? (Not directed at the OP here, just a general comment)

What's with all the complaints lately? Geez! And the smoking thing has been 'done to death'. I'm a non-smoker, I hate smoke in non-designated places, but for heaven's sake....enough already!!

I'm not going to close the thread since the OP has every right to let her thoughts be known on the subject and to get replies. If it goes the route this particular topic ALWAYS goes, I'll see you shortly with my big, nasty Whammy Stick.

Wow! Are you joking?I didn't know mods had the license to be condescending and downright rude to a poster that was just stating her experience.

I didn't see the rude or condenscending side.

And even stated it wasn't directed to the OP.

The mod, just as with the OP stated was expressing what they thought on a topic that has been beaten to death.

Guess here soon it will get closed down anyway-because it does look like it's heading in that direction.

There is no reason for this thread to be shut down unless people cannot play nice...

I saw what you had there before you edited. I don't think Cleo said anything that warranted being reported. ;)

I have encountered 2 people smoking in a non-smoking area. But that was in 2000 & 2002 & I think the whole designanted smoking area was new & I assumed those people who were smoking were Disney Vets who didn't know the rules changed because they didn't need to read the guide map (not that I did either but I do because well that is what we all do).

So the first person I encountered was smoking in Epcot. We were up by the American Pavillion waiting for Illuminations to start & we were watching my most favorite parade (beside MSEP), the Tapestry of Nations (this was in 2000). Some guy was puffing away from me when clearly the designated smoking area was just across the way.

So I figured I'd be a polite northerner for once & I told the CM & he told the guest to move to that area.

We were down wind of the smoke so listening to the drums beat from the parade & smoke were just not enjoyable.

The second time was in 2002. We had our 15 month old with us & we were in the MK at the hub waiting for Spectromagic. One lady next to me was smoking when I ever so politely  told her that she wasn't supposed to smoke here & that the park was non-smoking unless in designated areas.

She gripped a bit but did move. The lady next to me said "THANK GOD!" and basically thanked me.

Those were the only 2 times we had to deal with smoke other then smelling it from the Poly around our room but we were near a smoking section of Tahiti so it was expected.

But in general 99.9% of the smokers in Disney do comply :thumbsup2

I stated she had every right to post her thoughts, and she does. It's just that this topic has been done about a billion times, with the end result being nothing but nasty griping back and forth. Even so, I did state she has the right to post about it here, and again, she does. Notice the thread has not been closed? I even stated my comments were not directed at the OP, but were made as a general dismay at all the complaint threads on TPA&S lately.

The only joking I was doing was about my nasty Whammy Stick. I don't really have one. I'm just a little blonde woman who wishes there were fewer threads on the boards compalining about things that are never going to be resolved on an internet board. But again, no matter how I feel about it, the poster has the right to state her thoughts and get other's thoughts on the matter. I support her right to post, the right for others to reply, and again, you'll notice the thread is still open.

Well stated, MP, and welcome to the DIS, I see you are quite new here on the DIS.

If you feel like asking a question, making a statement/thought, feel free to do so, but they do want you to remain on topic, which you certainly did, this being the Theme park board, and your expressing a concern about one of the problems of one of the parks, smoking outside the areas designated fro the habit.

One thing I have seen over the years here on the DIS (regardless what board) is that new people, to the DIS in general, or to a board in specific (I think we all were once upon a time) do ask questions and make statements that have been asked or stated before, as they are new, have not seen before. I know I did when I came here eight years ago, and still probably do here on the Theme park board, spending more time here on this board the past few months and not having frequented it too often over the past eight years here.

As to the OP, if I have a clod smoking near me, not in a designated smoking area (I never am in one), I ask that the smoker either extinguish their smoke or to please move to a designated area. If they acquiesce, I thank them. If they continue, I just ask the nearest CM to please handle the matter. Some people just are ignorant and self-centered. I do think the CM's pretty much ignore smokers smoking out of the designated smoke areas, unless asked by a guest to intervene. That is wrong too, IMO, they should be proactive to the problem, not just reactive. Again, JMO.

Again, welcome to the DIS, MP. :wave2:

Well...........for what's it worth.

I am a non smoker (occasionally smoked in the past)

Dh is a "light" smoker.

I HATE smoke now, and it bothers me when dh smokes, but I deal with it..like it or not. (hey...I am not perfect either although I will not tell dh that! :rotfl: )

Dh smokes in "desginated areas" only while in WDW...I mean we have to STUDY the map to find an area for him to go!!!!!!!!!! I find it VERY rude when one smokes "outside" of the designated area BUT would it ruin my vacation? NOT IN THE LEAST!!!! I mean, if it bothered me THAT much, as an adult I would address the issue. If that failed...well my reaction would depend on the situation.

How many have been in a movie theatre lately? Do you see the sign that says "please refrain from cell phone use"????????? Does that stop people from using their cell phones during the movie? NOPE!!!! In know, cell phones do not create health issues HOWEVER you DO pay to watch the movie and if you are interuppted by the rude person next to you then you have a right to complain................. Do you complain?

There are rules, some obide some do not. Unless it is against the law there are always going to be those that "test" the rules...like it or not. Deal with it the best you can and go to bed happy...............

wanted to add one thought............

I know people get concerned with "2nd hand smoke"....and you should because it is serious issue BUT you need to be realistic. 2nd hand smoke is not "OH MY, I was standing in line for It's a Small World in WDW and this person was smoking and now I have issues".......

it is someone that was/is continually around smokers and deals with the unfortunate effects. I guess I am lucky.........my dad was a chain smoker (still alive and kicking) and I am very healthy. I know this is not always the case...............

Speaking as an ex-smoker:cheer2: ...

is the ban on smoking or tobacco products in general?

I've run into a few smokless tobacco chewers (@ WDW & other public events) randomly spitting their juice on the cement :scared1: or, even worse IMO, into an empty water bottle (ab-so-lute-ly disgusting to see) that they lug around with them.

New rules for the board:

1. only happy, joyful, pixie-dust-filled posts from now on please    .
2. No complaints or grumbling allowed. :rolleyes1
3. We don't care what you experienced while you were on vacation - unless of course everything was covered in pixie dust, then you're more welcome to share. :thumbsup2

And yes, I'm being saracastic. :stir:

Practically perfect in every way...even in our posts. And of course, it should all be so disney like...no complaining, no ranting, no digressing...and I've been "shut down" once before only after a few hours post (you don't want to know what "awful" topic I brought up!) so I say, post till you can't post no more...all within reason mind you :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: oh, and the smoking is pretty yucky...especially when its a zillion degrees outside and humid cause the cloud of smoke seems to linger longer. I would have said something sooner the the man myself but then my freinds and husband always send me "in" to do the dirty work when we are out! :rotfl2:

I'm one of those obnoxious non-smokers. Meaning, that when faced with someone who is smoking in my vacinity, I have no shame about fanning the air, coughing dramatically, and making loud comments about emphysema and black lungs. I just don't care anymore..I used to just tolerate it but I had a severe asthma attack and after that, the gloves came off. Granted, it's hard to quit but doable(my Dad quit at 44 after he had a heart attack) and I find it sad that some people are so addicted that they can't wait until they are in a smoking area.

Someone called you obnoxious smoker?

And I don't blame anyone for standing up to smoker's who don't smoke in designated areas, when they are available at the parks.

Alright all, gonna go finish getting ready for my trip to WDW tomorrow. And yes, while in the parks I will use the designated areas. :goodvibes

Man, I remember years ago when there weren't many restrictions in place. By comparison now the parks are like a wonderland of pure air. :P

I don't know if anyone else has encountered this...but I was at WDW for my honeymoon Aug 23-Sept 1...I was SHOCKED at how often I saw people just strolling through the park, puffing away on a ciggarette. I was trying to watch illuminations one evening...had a GREAT spot and this man was next to me (with his very loud RUDE family...as in kid wants to stand where someone is already standing and says very LOUDLY to his dad "Tell that stupid fat lady to move dad!" Dad laughs...mom laughs...kid says it five more times... ) Anyhow, I digress...

This man was chain smoking throughout the entire show...I thought perhaps we had wandered into a smoking area on accident as I was sure that no one would just smoke where ever they felt like it...but nope, not in a smoking area...I honestly don't want to infringe upon the enjoyment of others, but I was really annoyed that this guy would smoke in a very large crowd. To make matters worse I am terribly asthmatic and I did not bring my inhaler b/c I didn't anticipate being surrounded by smoke but I didn't want to move b/c I really wanted to see Illumnations and this was the only night we could do it. I was just going to suffer in silence, but when my breathing got ragged my DH just couldn't take it and asked him to please put his ciggarette out. He said "Oh sure...sorry man...sorry..." drops it on the GRASS and I kid you not, LIT UP ANOTHER ONE less than 30 seconds later. He was obviously very intoxicated (had several of those HUGE tall plastic cups...know what I mean? Shaped funny...big...anyhow..) So I told my DH to just drop it as the show was nearly over.

Has anyone else encountered people just ignoring the rules on smoking in Disney? Why is it that CM's don't do anything about it? I hate it that people are allowed to smoke around kids. *sigh*

anyhow...wow that was a big ol VENT huh? thanks for reading!!!
What a waiste of time! You just got back from I assume a great trip and you bring up smoking problems at the parks? I don't smoke and this is a waste of time talking about. You have to go through life with a thick skin if you let every little thing that anoys you get at ya' then.....well thats a shame.

As an ex smoker of over 16 yrs. I sometimes find smoking overwhelming

but for the most part it really doesn't bother me & I don't find my kids threatened by it at all..
on any given day my kids are smoke free..

am I nervous that 2-3 days out of the year they are in contact with a smoker and 2nd hand smoke

absolutely not :bounce: :bounce:

so my fellow smokers. who go to WDW :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

I say

Smoke you darn brains out!!! :cheer2: :cheer2:

I am not offended at all :dance3:

okay I have said my peace

If a smoker is smoking outside a designated area, I always get the nearest CM. They've never not handled it. Will they police it on their own? No. should they? Yes. But we all know a CM is going to be emboldened when he's resolving a customer complaint rather than initiating something for which he may get a customer complaint for on his own.

We saw this happening in April everyday all over the parks. It disappoints me that the CM's do not do anything when they encounter people smoking out side of the designated areas.
Doesn't apply to all CMs. I was talking to the Greeter at Winnie the Pooh in Disneyland, when I noticed a man walking by with a cigarette. I said, "Oh, look at that" and she actually went after him! (meanwhile, I was 'playing' Greeter, since she'd been alone :teeth: )

but, some (not all) smokers have a kind of rebel attitude towards only smoking in designated areas,
And some (not all, not even most) smokers aren't aware that they can smoke only in designated areas.

If other people are going to be selfish and inconsiderate and try to disease MY lungs (and my child's! )
Walk away. With few, very rare exceptions, momentary exposure to cigarette smoke outdoors (unless it's being blown literally in your face) is annoying but not disease-causing.

It was even worse for us as we did all get sick (colds/ear infections) and on top of that had to breathe in smoke while walking to the foodcourt to get some tea.
Which resort has only one pathway/entrance to the foodcourt?

Lung Cancer is the number one killing cancer. Yes you can get it from seacond hand smoke.
Not from walking by, or being walked by by, an active smoker.

Wow! Are you joking?I didn't know mods had the license to be condescending and downright rude to a poster that was just stating her experience.
Ouch! I didn't know moderators aren't permitted to have - or post - opinions.

Do you find that's more successful than simply ASKING the person not to smoke (assuming, of course, that either you're in a non-smoking area OR that you were there first)?

It would seem to me that maybe some members have not seen all the other threads about non-smoking and now they are giving some of their opinions.

I'm not the OP but I did post on this thread & you are right ... I'm somewhat new here & hadn't previously seen any threads re: smoking at WDW.

Thanks for your perspective. I'm surprised at many of the nasty comments flying around on this thread!
