Smoking in the parks...YUCK!

I think smoking areas perhaps should be hidden away from paths.

Overall throughout the parks they didn't bother me, but I went during a quiet season and no doubt, I can imagine it being a real nightmare for non-smokers during peak season.

What a waiste of time! You just got back from I assume a great trip and you bring up smoking problems at the parks? I don't smoke and this is a waste of time talking about. You have to go through life with a thick skin if you let every little thing that anoys you get at ya' then.....well thats a shame.

I'm not understanding what the problem is really...I mean second hand smoke KILLS...it IS a big deal, it has nothing to do with having a thick skin or "live and let live"...it's smoke...it kills...end of story. I happened to be surprised that there were so many smokers at Disneyworld...I wanted to know if others encountered this often. I'm taking my step kids soon and they have asthma that is exacerbated by cig. smoke and I wanted to know if we needed to bring their inhalers. Normally they don't need them unless we are in places that have a high concentration of smoke or smog. I think that having to worry if my kids can breathe while at Disneyworld b/c people who smoke don't follow directions is a shame...asking for information...not so much.

Mostly I don't understand why people read these posts if you don't like them...if you don't want to "waste" your time on another smoking rant then why on earth open a post that is clearly about smoking? That is YOUR choice. It's a message board...don't read the messages you aren't interested in...that's the beauty of it! :thumbsup2

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. I didn't mean to cause an uproar...just a request for information.

Second hand smoke kills only if you are exposed to it day in and day out. Random exposure at WDW is not going to kill you.

Bottom line is that smoking and cigarettes are legal in this country. Until tobacco and cigarettes are banned and made illegal in this country (which will never happen) some people are going to smoke *irregardless* :) of where they are.

I recently stayed in a Best Western while away at a conference. They had just recently refurbished and put in the most wonderful beds; the rooms were amazingly clean and fresh and this place is along NW Coast where it can be very damp. The new policy of this inn was no smoking--on grounds, in rooms, by the pool, period no exceptions. The staff let us know that when we checked in, that if their housekeeping crew smelled any lingering smoke within the room, they would charge our credit cards a $500 refurbishment fee. One guest who said he'd gladly take a walk to smoke was warned that he should be careful about the smoke smell being transferred by his clothing to bed linens. He actually was given a plastic garment-type bag to put his jacket in so that it would not transfer odors.

I am very sensitive to cigarette smoke - I have asthma which is triggered quickly by being exposed to secondhand smoke and I thanked the desk staff for the policy. One of the staff said he was glad I appreciated it, but actually the policy was put into place because someone with respiratory illness brought litagation against the company for having health issues triggered by exposure to a smoke in a room that was supposed to be non-smoking. If this type of response happened at a Best Western in smaller community, I can't imagine that it will take long for Disney to want to protect themselves from a potential suit too.

EXACTALLY!!!! Well said!!!! Some people need to leave this thread if they don't like it. After all if this thread is a waste according to them, then what are they even doing here "wasting their time"...LOL. :rotfl:

Don't apologize...you have every right to voice your opinion and ask questions. ;)

I feel very strongly about this issue due to my own health problems, but I am smart enough to know this is not the place for my feelings to be dictated to everyone else in an offensive manner. Everyone can voice their opinion, it does not mean that we have to be rude or offensive. After all this a discussion forum!!!!

I find it horrible that people tell some to just ignore cigarete smoke. I wish I could just ignore the smoke, and get some thick skin.

From just a person puffing away while we are walking past them, and am blessed w/ an immediate sore, throat, and itchining and watery eyes.
Then it moves on to a nice headache which can last for days.

It doesn't just last a few minutes, if repeatedly thru the day I keep walking past people who are smoking I can be sick up to a week at a time. Yes a week of waking up every morning w/ eyes swelled up, sore throat, head swelled and all my nasal pasages swelled.

Yuck, is all I have to say. If your a smoker please be considerate of those around you. Some people have an immediate reaction to the smoke, and yes walking past people who are smoking, standing behind someone who reaks of smoke makes me sick too.

I try to be considerate when asking people to stop smoking if its during a parade or something. But its extremely frustrating when I have to get up and move after waiting over an hour for a parade or show because someone is smoking, waiting 5 minutes for my husband to get a CM just isn't realistic for me.
So many times there are no CM's near by.

I try to be polite to those smoking in non-designated areas, and remind them smoking is only allowed in certain areas, and to check their map for a location.

On our last trip we were watching the gorillas at AK, the backside viewing of the gorillas. This younger person lights up. First I saw the gorillas get up and leave, right then is when I noticed the smoke. Honestly, smoking in front of animal exhibits, at least the gorillas got it right. They got up and left. The person who lit up wasn't even interested in looking at the animals, he was faced the other direction and not interested in seeing them at all.
I don't think he realized he scared the gorillas away until I told him, they left because he was smoking. The gorillas had been playing, and sometimes napping there, for quite some time. It was just disapointing that the animals left the area, but I don't blame them for wanting to stay and be around smoke.

If you are a smoker. What approach would you find your response most likly to put our your cigarete in a non-designated smoking section?
Some people I've encountered say they are not informed about the smoking policy, fine and they put out the cigarete. Others just seem to ignore you.

Some people will have immediate asthma attacks which often lead to hospitalization. Death? Maybe not, but isn't that bad enough? I guess the rule-breaking smokers have a greater right to smoke wherever they want than the rest of us have to breathe without risk of serious injury or disease. :confused3

To the person who suggested we just walk away, um, no. If someone is breaking a park rule, CLEARLY POSTED, I will NOT just walk away. I will report him/her and complain if the situation is not addressed by a CM. No, I won't stand there intentionally exposing myself to the smoke, but I won't just "walk away"...

My allergy is the same way zumbergc! It's really miserable. My step daughter gets really scared when her asthma acts up b/c she gasps for air. It IS frustrating when people tell you to "ignore it" and get a thick skin. As I said before it's not a thick skin issue. People not wearing deoderant...now THAT is a thick skin issue...and something else I encountered quite a bit at Disney! ;) :rotfl:

I'm sorry you suffer with smoke allergies. People who don't have them have no idea how debilitating it can be. :grouphug:

AMEN to your entire post. Next we will hear from someone who will say that if we can't breathe when people are BREAKING THE RULES by smoking outside of designated areas, we should stay home. A la peanut allergies...refer to numerous other threads for reference. :rotfl: I am just kidding. Sorta. Please don't close this thread on my account! :bitelip:

I am a smoker.

I rarely smoke at the parks at all because I'm too busy having fun.

When I do smoke; I am always in a designated area.

People who sit in the smoking area and complain bother me as much as those who smoke outside the areas.

I am highly allergic to lots of different perfumes. Is there a special section for people that wear perfume I am allergic to?

How about a section for those with B.O.?

I myself have terrible asthma, being around smokers will bring on asthma related breathing problems that do last for days. The reason the OP was upset is because it is the rule Disney has in place. If you were to light up at a Sporting event or concert, you would be escorted out and not allowed to re-enter. Rules are for everyone, not a select few.
That being said, I also instill that last statement in my children and they seem to understand it.
Ok I'm off my soapbox.

I understand, but what are you going to do? Let some inconsiderate jerk ruin your entire evening. Whenever you get a group of human beings together you are going to get folks who are going to be rude, whether its cigarette smoking, jumping in line or obnoxious behaviour and while you can remind them about disney's smoking policy I'm willing to bet they really could care less.
While I hate the smell of smoke, I accept the fact that I can't control folks behaving badly. Let it roll off your backs and remove yourself from the situation.

 Its crazy that smoking is no longer allowed inside restaurants & bars here where we live, but when we take our kids to WDW next month we will be subjected to it there! I know we're discussing "outdoor" smoke, & Im all for equal rights & understand the addiction of smoking, but really, can't smokers survive w/out tugging a rat for the day at a childrens theme park! We've all seen the studies on 2nd hand smoke:rolleyes: :smokin:

WOW Did you see where they said it was not directed at the OP :confused3

Wow! Are you joking?I didn't know mods had the license to be condescending and downright rude to a poster that was just stating her experience.

But dont forget Disney is for KIDS of all ages

I'm one of those obnoxious non-smokers. Meaning, that when faced with someone who is smoking in my vacinity, I have no shame about fanning the air, coughing dramatically, and making loud comments about emphysema and black lungs. I just don't care anymore..I used to just tolerate it but I had a severe asthma attack and after that, the gloves came off. Granted, it's hard to quit but doable(my Dad quit at 44 after he had a heart attack) and I find it sad that some people are so addicted that they can't wait until they are in a smoking area.

Now this is what I don't understand - instead of being all dramatic and passive aggressive, why not just tell the person that they are not in a smoking area and ask them to extinguish their cigarette? Or why not just go to the nearest cast member? :confused3

Why be obnoxious?

I've gone up to CMs in DL/DCA when someone has been smoking in a parade area, or in a queue, and they kindly handle it for me. :)

Spray misters and waterguns are perfectly legal in the US too, but if I walked up to the smokers and started squirting you in the face (or anywhere else as far as that goes) it wouldnt take you long to ask what my problem was.

Maybe we should start doing that.

One person said "instead of pitching a fit you should ask nicely". I say if your smoking in a nonsmoking area you KNOW you are not supposed to be doing it, and you JUST DONT GIVE A CRAP!!! Most smokers think were just being sissies not putting up with their foul and expensive habit. They need to wake up and smell their stench!!! If you smoke, You STINK (literally), your clothes stink, your children stink. Cigarettes STINK. Period. Were not the ones burning things from our mouths. if God had intended for us to smoke he would have given us a bic lighter in one of our fingers!!! Smokers are the ones wasting their money and making everyone around them angry, not the other way around. And if you blow smoke in my face I will tell you just that.

Sometimes it feels good to vent. :cool1: :goodvibes :cool1:
