But dont forget Disney is for KIDS of all ages

This is one area where nobody brings up "Walt would have wanted it that way!" :rotfl: Walt would have been more likely to set up a few little roped-off "non-smoking sections" and put more ashtrays out all over the park.

I have to respectfully disagree with the statement that any smoker caught smoking in a non-smoking area knows that it is not allowed, and doesn't care. I agree that for the majority, that is probably true. But I know that my mother had to ask me what she needed to do about smoking in the hotel and the parks during our Oct. trip. She has never been to Disney before, and honestly didn't know, and she definitely doesn't want to bother anyone with her smoking. If she hadn't asked, she would have had no idea of the rules, and although she is the kind of person that would take the time to find out once at the park what the rules are, many others would assume that since it is outside, then there must not be a problem with it. Yes, I know that common sense would tell anyone that if there are smoking areas in the parks, then logically that means that the rest of the park is non-smoking. But some folks fail to notice sometimes, especially in a place like Disney - basically sensory overload, and it's often hard to be truely aware of your surroundings. So I don't think I could automatically be rude to someone who was smoking near me - I think I would either tell them nicely that smoking is not allowed in the parks except in smoking areas, and if that didn't work, get a CM. I won't be hateful to someone unless they are hateful to me first, produces bad karma. But to each their own....... :sunny:

Man I need a smoke. puff, puff, puff.ahhhhhhhhhh!

If you are living in a major metro are(i.e Orlando) the air you breath is filled with more chemicals to list. I read few months back(Time mag) that more than half of lung cancer cases are from people that don,t smoke they don't live with someone that smokes its just where they live. Just food for though.

Same here, so here goes! :stir:
Honestly, though...my personal feeling is that smoking should not be allowed in ANY of the parks, period. However, I realize that this would be a terrible business decision and would also create a hardship for some families. So it drives me CRAZY that the smoking areas aren't enforced. I will complain to the offenders and CMs when I see it happening, and probably write a letter after my vacation if nothing is done on the spot. I cannot breathe when people are smoking. Period. If other people are going to be selfish and inconsiderate and try to disease MY lungs (and my child's! :sad2: ) as well as their own, then they can stand a mild tongue-lashing from the likes of me! :thumbsup2

I totally agree, no smoking at all! I hate reeking from having to walk by smoke even, ugh. As for it being a terrible business decision, I am not so sure about that, there would be MANY who would welcome it. :)

Now this is what I don't understand - instead of being all dramatic and passive aggressive, why not just tell the person that they are not in a smoking area and ask them to extinguish their cigarette? Or why not just go to the nearest cast member? :confused3

Why be obnoxious?
Because when when I've tried to nicely ask someone to not smoke in an area where they are not supposed to be smoking, I've gotten the nasty replies and the "smokers have rights" speech. Most people smoking in a non-smoking area are well aware that they are doing so-they don't care that THEY are being obnoxious and inconsiderate of those with asthma or allergies. Like I said, when dealing with these types of people, sometimes you have to stoop to their level, because that's the only way they'll get it.

You're forgetting one thing- That was life back then. Times have definately changed. We now know the dangers of smoking, and don't want to be subjected to second hand smoke. It causes asthma in some, repeated inhalation can cause cancer, it just plain reeks, and although it doesn't ruin the whole trip, it does taint that period of time you have to deal with it.
Now a question. Is there a reason why I can't have an opinion? It seems to me that alot of people on the boards like trying to tell people what they should or shouldn't say. That such and such has been done, or i don't like your negativity. Thats the whole reason for the boards- for people to express their opinions. Sometimes they're gonna be negative, and sometimes they'll go against the norm.Thats Life!! And sometimes they may make you angry or annoyed. Well I say good!! I hope they do. You don't have to like what they say, just accept that it can and will be said.

but really, can't smokers survive w/out tugging a rat for the day at a childrens theme park! We've all seen the studies on 2nd hand smoke
It's not a childrens' theme park, its for everyone. And apparently you DON'T understand the addiction of smoking, or you wouldn't have made this statement. Remember, the issue in this thread is smokers smoking IN the parks but OUTSIDE the designated smoking areas.

One person said "instead of pitching a fit you should ask nicely". I say if your smoking in a nonsmoking area you KNOW you are not supposed to be doing it,
You don't know what the smoker knows or doesn't know. Again, instead of 'pitching a fit' (or obnoxiously and exaggeratedly fanning the air and being overdramatic), in an adult manner point out that smoking is not permitted in that area, or find a Cast Member to handle it.

Smokers are the ones wasting their money and making everyone around them angry, not the other way around. And if you blow smoke in my face I will tell you just that.
Not your concern - it's THEIR money to "waste" (and since nicotine is an addictive substance, I bet most smokers consider the cost a necessity - not a waste).
But really, "Please don't smoke in this area, it's not permitted", is going to be FAR more effective than "Ugh, you stink! Your cigarette stinks! Your clothes stink (although why you'd get close enough to a smoker to sniff their apparel is beyond me ;))! Your kids stink! Yuck!"

Okay- I have to respond here.
I used to be a smoker so I know all about the "addiction". I also know that you make a choice to smoke. Now I don't care if you smoke or not. That's your business - BUT- I can only imagine just how polite and nice someone would be if you walked up to them and asked them to stop smoking (nicely of course!) :rotfl: Maybe you would encounter a nice person here and there but I would have to say that overall you are going to be met with a less than warm greeting. Also- YES- I don't have to be on top of you to smell your smoky clothes etc. I happen to know a family of smokers and you can smell them from at least 10 feet away. I am not the only one who notices this. They also wonder why their son has respiratory problems but that's a whole nother thread. Personally, I don't care what you chose to do (smoker vs. non) but I would like it if we could all follow the rules. Now it won't ruin my vacation, but it is very annoting to have to always walk in a different direction so my kids don't get sick. I don't feel like I need to be the police on vacation. The rules should be enforced. Oh- and as a former smoker, if you are walking in a throng of people at an amusement park it doesn't take much to figure out that even if it is allowed, it is not the best place to have a smoke. It could actually bother people and a person could get burned. That's just courtesy and common sense. I am not trying to be rude so please don't take it that way. princess:

Amen to that. And notice how it's never THEIR family who does something obnoxious? (Not directed at the OP here, just a general comment)

What's with all the complaints lately? Geez! And the smoking thing has been 'done to death'. I'm a non-smoker, I hate smoke in non-designated places, but for heaven's sake....enough already!!

I'm not going to close the thread since the OP has every right to let her thoughts be known on the subject and to get replies. If it goes the route this particular topic ALWAYS goes, I'll see you shortly with my big, nasty Whammy Stick.
what, cleo do you own the dis boards! if people want to complain about smoking in the park thats their perogitive! and you know what to do with your big ,nasty wammy stick!

IMO It is only common sense that if there are designated smoking areas noted everywhere, ie on the maps, on the Disney tv channel in the hotel room and many other places I observed in April, then all other places are designated as non-smoking. When we checked in the CM told us that the resort was non-smoking and there were smoking areas clearly marked throughout the resort. :) :thumbsup2

Okay, I get it. I really do. As a matter of fact, I don't smoke cigarettes at all. But I do occasionally enjoy a fat, offensive, billowing, rancid cigar - especially on special occassions like . . . going to the WL in 6 days!!!! :cool1:
So - advise me. Where and when should I light up to least offend people. I'd love to walk my cigar out to the boat dock at night to see the light parade. I'll be as considerate as I can. Help me here. Your lungs and vacation experience could depend on it.
SINGLE DIGITS

I'm a smoker and I only use the designated smoking areas in the parks, I was appaulled by how many people just lit up wherever and I also made loud comments about it as I passed the people.

There are areas for smoking and they are to be used. I get the parkmap as I enter the park and I locate where I can go.

Ignorant people are my pet peeve, even being a smoker myself I'd never smoke anywhere BUT where it is allowed!

I'm far from an anti and I can readily admit there are a lot of smokers who can be smelled from many feet away. There are several people in my office who you can smell within about five feet. It smells like they sleep in an ash tray.

Of course, this isn't happening from smoking in outdoor areas, it's from smoking in tiny enclosed spaces, like their cars.

I have no problem with people smoking in the designated areas. I actually saw one smoking section in AK and it had a KILLER view. We sat there with a few other smokers and since I was the one out of place I smiled and enjoyed the view for a few minutes then moved on. But when i'm watching Illuminations, the only smoke I want to smell is from the barge, and it dont smoke, it burns.
Im from NC, Winston Salem to be exact. Home of Winston cigarettes and Reynolds. People here for the most part dont care if you like their smoke or not. They are going to do it and if you dont like it you can get over it. Thats their attitude. So pardon my aggression, but Ive had to live with this "smokers" mentality for my whole life. Ive had people tell me many times "Cigarrettes MADE Winston Salem. If you dont like them you should move to another town". Thats why I'm so strong against them.

That's exactly what I said - it IS common sense, but not everyone has a lot of that. :thumbsup2
