Smoking in Restraunts.......

KimRaye,
I appreciate your honesty. To bad there our more smokers than not, that could care less at restraunts.:(

Here is another smoker's (hopefully not for long) opinion. I will ALWAYS respect other diner's wishes by not smoking if the "smoking area" is too close to the "non-smoking" area. I most certainly understand people wishes to not have to breathe second hand smoke while dining.

Planogirl's remark of dining establishments providing an outdoor area is a good one (though not always feasible) and have actually been to a restaurant that did just that. It was in Bar Harbor, Maine and they had a very small outdoor area for any of their smoking patrons to step out to and have a cigarette. They had a few chimaneras (small clay fireplaces) to break the chill and lots of tasteful astrays. I applauded the management for being considerate. We stayed there for a good long time and spent quite a few $$.

Diners have a right to eat smoke free. Just give us smokers a reasonable option.

I quit smoking about 3 years ago after smoking at least 2 packs a day for over 20 years. Cigarette smoke does not bother me in a restaurant, but, I do understand that it DOES bother some folks. Personally, I believe restaurants should be able to decide whether they want to be smoking or non-smoking, as long as they tell people in advance, folks can decide wether or not to patronize them. It goes both ways, if a restaurant allows smoking, some non smokers simply won't go there...If they are non smoking, some smokers will choose not to go there.

The one thing I don't get is how restaurants can have smoking SECTIONS....That's kinda like having a peeing SECTION in a pool.

Another smoker here, ugh I loathe it, but that is another story. I DO NOT smoke in my home, car or public places...only in my screened in deck at home, yes I am a closet smoker. Only 1-4 per day.

So yes I would love it if our establishments would be smoke free here in MO. BUT they are not and certainly the worst places are DAVE and BUSTERS & the CASINOS!!!

Kim (and other smokers), I was not pointing the finger at considerate smokers. My huband, my dad and my grandparents smoked, but they were willing to smoke outdoors or in their own home (DH did not smoke in our home due to allergies and asthma). I understand that many of you wish you could stop. It's rough.

I just hate that I have to breathe other's smoke when I go out to eat. Seems like non-smokers should have the right not to be exposed to it.

They do, at a restaurant that doesn't allow smoking!

My MIL is one of those people that simply can't go one hour without a smoke. If you would even DARE ask her why she can't, she'll just tell you to mind your own business. A very "determined" smoker to put it politely. I can't stand being in a restaurant where there is a smoking section. The smoke drifts over and just hangs in the air. Not only is it nauseating, but then I leave smelling like an ashtray. I have to go home and take a shower. Makes me sick. Here in NY, most restaurants are now all non-smoking, but there's a Ruby Tuesday near us that has a smoking section, and we just don't go there anymore. You can't contain cigarette smoke, it's just takes right over.

You would think so, wouldn't you? How many non-smoking restuarants can you name in your area? For me, I can only name 1, and it went out of business more than a year ago. In Virginia (at least in my area), non-smoking restaurants are impossible to find. If there are any fellow Northern Virginians here that know of any non-smoking restaurants in the area, please let me know!! I'll definitely give it a try.

:D

A large percentage of the non-chain restaurants in the area are non smoking.

Not yet in Oklahoma. I'm looking forward to the time that the law goes into effect here. I'd love to frequent non-smoking restaurants. It's just not fair that it makes me sick when I go out to eat.

and I believe that is the way that it should be. The individual restaurant owners make their own decisions about how they want to run their establishments. Same goes for the consumer.

I'm a nonsmoker, and I live in an area that has a large senoir citizen population. It seems as if they want to smoke wherever they go. You would think that they would have realized by now, that it is bad for your health.:D

I think a law that allows restaurants to choose between being a smoking or non-smoking establishment is great. I'd just like to have the chance to go somewhere where the smoke doesn't roll into the non-smoking section.

jrmasm, are you referring to restaurants in Virginia? (I'm not sure where you are from) If so, could you please list a few? I'd love to give some a try. :D

If I am in a smoking section of a restaurant, I don't need to wait an hour for a smoke. I have the restaurant's permission to smoke right there at my table.

Thats whyI don't care if states raise taxes on cigarettes $5 per pack in the future. We will see then how many people continue to chain smoke

. I don't have a problem when smokers light up in there own home(even though they are not considering there children), but when they infringe on other people's "air", thats when I think the states need to step in like Calif,N.Y. etc, and other states are starting to do.
As a few above posters have said, it is pretty bad when you have to go home and throw your clothes in the wash"imediatley",take a shower, etc just from second hand smoke.
I don't know how people can breathe in "Bingo Halls" or other establishments where there is an excess of smoke.:(

Just wanted to add that so far in Hawaii, 3 of 4 counties have passed laws either banning smoking in restaurants, or requiring separate ventilation for smoking sections. Additionally, we have raised the tax on tobacco products to increase incrementally for the next several years. I already know a few people who have quit because it's cost-prohibitive to smoke.

If some smokers would answer this, I would appreciate it. Would it be that hard to go "1 hour" without a cigarette? I know in the state of California all restraunts and bars are non-smoking, and the state of N.Y is moving in that direction.I hope in the near future all states follow there lead, at least in "Restraunts."

I would be delighted to answer this question, however, I don't have an answer because we only sit in non smoking in restaurants. I cannot stand smoke around food. If dinner is going slowly I will excuse myself and go outside.

I have yet to encounter smoke in the non smoking area, but, I guess we have been lucky.

If they have made it this far, I think they are past worrying about it.
