Smoking and NON-smoking are still requests when making a reservation. In this day and age are you really allowed to smoke INSIDE a resort room/villa? I can't imagine requesting non-smoking and ending up with a smoking unit. It would ruin the whole vacation. :confused3

I would hate for anything to ruin my whole vacation, so I ensure that I don't count on anything other than what I'm explicitly guaranteed.

I would have to agree. I wouldn't like my family to walk into a smoking unit with all of us being non smokers. Even at some of the parks it was tough. At AK there is a smoking area right next to the outdoor eating area of Restaurantasorous...that didn't go over well with the DW especially when there was no place to move to.

Which resort are you staying at? DVC has cut down on the number of smoking rooms. The other problem is people who don't get the smoking room and just smoke in a non-smoking room, leaving it smelly for the next person.

The basic answer is yes. If someone gets a smoking room, the previous people have most likely been in there smoking just like at any other resort.

I know what you're talking about, since about two years ago I was at a non-Disney resort in Missouri and was forced to take a smoking room. The smell was brutal. :guilty:

Fortunately, I have always asked for and received non-smoking rooms through DVC. :)

Disney is drastically cutting back on smoking rooms. The recent Vacation Magic, according to my wife, has an article that a couple of villas at Disney's Hilton Head Resort are being redone so they can be converted from smoking to non-smoking. I read another article recently that stated all hotel rooms at Disneyland will become non-smoking in the near future.

Sorry smokers, but your habit has become socially unacceptable and it will become more difficult for you to light up. :smokin: :smokin:

For some reason, WDW doesn't let you reserve nonsmoking rooms. They are on a request basis. That's probably so Disney can sell out as many rooms as possible. I for one wouldn't reserve a room is there wasn't a nonsmoking room available. Even Motel 6 will let you reserve a nonsmoking room, but my guess is Disney figures it will cut into their profits. All Disneyland resort rooms are now nonsmoking. Hopefully WDW will get a clue and do the same thing soon. At the very least they should allow you to reserve a nonsmoking room.

We had a non smoking room in what appeared to be an entirely non smoking building at SSR a few weeks ago.

Every morning and every evening the closet in the Master bedroom part of the one bedroom filled with the smell of cigarette smoke. The people below us would go out of their room and smoke in the hallway. The smoke would somehow end up in our closet.

It was really bad only in the morning and evening. I guess that when they woke up they needed to smoke a few packs to wake up and a few packs at night to get ready for bed. :smokin:

What alot of people don't realize is that even if you "reserve" a non-smoking room at a hotel, you could show up and end up in a smoking room. So a non-smoking room isn't a guarantee at any hotel. Unfortunately, DH has found this out the hard way as he travels extensively on business The first time he checked in to a hotel and found his non-smoking room was suddenly not available and all that was was a smoking room, boy was he shocked, and it's happened to him and other coworkers several times over the years . So yes, it can happen anywhere. As long as hotels offer both smoking and non smoking rooms, non-smoking is never a true guarantee. The only way to guarantee a non smoking room is to stay at a non smoking hotel.

My mom smokes and when we arrive at our "home" the first thing I do is go to the balcony and tell her "it's all yours"! She used to get rather nasty but has finally accepted the fact that her home is the only place she can smoke freely not everyone elses. She really has gotten very good.

It has been 'socially unacceptable' for most of human civilization to have a 'habit' of making statements condescending towards others whom you maynot agree with as well.

Well actually, a non-smoking room IS becoming guaranteed in many places -- either because local laws prohibit smoking in hotel rooms, or because the hotels adopt no-smoking policies. Last year, on a business trip, I encountered two hotels which had strict no-smoking policies throughout their hotels. When I registered, I had to sign a notice that I understood that there would be a heavy penalty charged to my credit card if I smoked in the room. At one hotel, the penalty was $150 and the other was $200!

I was a little intrigued by the policy and asked at both hotels (same chain, far apart, in different states) if they really enforced that policy. Both places said OH YES. Both said they had credit card disputes over the issue, but when they supplied the signed notices, the credit card companies made the guest pay.

We get a lot of comments on the non-guarantee issue, and I really think DVC could resolve it without upsetting their business model if they wanted to. It's just not that big of an issue for them yet.

Through CRO, the non-DVC resorts can book "guaranteed non-smoking" rooms. I wonder if the DVC resorts might move in this direction.

Well, even with "guaranteed non-smoking" rooms, that doesn't mean the room was not smoked in.

My daughter has a severe smoke allergy. So when I made our reservations at Saratoga Springs I requested non-smoking. When we checked in we were told there were no non-smoking rooms available. I asked if we could get a room at ANY other DVC resort and they said no, all booked. It was Christmas week. So I decided to go to the room and just check it out. It smelled horrible so I called down and told them I needed to be moved or my daughter was going to be hospitalized and they would be footing the bill. All of a sudden a non-smoking room was available at the Boardwalk, don't know how that happened when minutes ago they said they were all booked!

I didn't know there was such a thing as "non-smoking for medical reasons" at the time. Now I know this and I was told by Member Services that if you have an allergy and state non-smoking for medical reasons on the reservation it is guaranteed. This is now what I request and we have had no more problems. But it did almost ruin the vacation, I am not exaggerating, my daughter would potentially have had to be hospitalized.

Lock and load, Super Soaker ready.

Then you have folks like us who got to our non-smoking room at OKW only to open the door and the stench hits you like a brick wall. They moved us but it cost us over 1 hour in the rain due to someone smoking in a roon clearly marked as non-smoking..smjj

Getting a smoking room would ruin our stay as well. :guilty:

We checked into the Polynesian a couple of years ago and our room wouldn't be ready for 1-2 hours, but they had a smoking room available now & we could have it if we wanted it. We checked it out thinking it might not be that bad, Ugh, as soon as we entered the building - the stench could knock you over! :scared::faint:

Non-smoking rooms should be something they could GUARANTEE! :sunny:

Though you may get ribbed for saying that a smoking room could ruin your whole vacation, well, I understand.

Many years ago I was a smoker, now I have severe, I mean severe smoke allergies, and a room that had been used as a smoking room could ruin my vacation. Being evtremely ill because of smoke really does kind of put a damper on things for me.

I once stayed overnight in a smoking room at another hotel( late check-in, needed a place to stay, nothing elese available anywhere close), you could not smell the smoke (well, not too much) but the next day, well, I had a very, very hard time breating, took me sevral days to recover. I felt as if I smoked a carton of cigarettes in one night (yuck).

So, I believe that reserving non-smoking rooms should be guraenteed (if you reserve early enough, last minute, you may have take your chances)

I hope smokers will be courteous enought to not smoke in non-smoking rooms, or make non-smokers "run the gauntlet" out of their room/bldg.

BTW: Out here in CA we have our first smoke-free town. No smoking anywhere inside or outside (except in your own house I guess). We'll have to see how this plays out and how it affects the rest of the USA. We wouldn't need laws such as this if everyone (smokers and non-smokers) were just more considerate, but this is the way of the world now-a-days.

Just MHO, YMMV

Later,

Andy

Wouldn't it be GREAT if the government could mandate that everyone who's ever smoked had a subdural expolsive device inplanted in them??.....one whif of something that someone might find offense ( bodily gases, bo, smoke etc. ) and they'd simply blow up!??? -- of course....the same implant could be configured to detect and explode with a detection of too fatty foods, too high of a blood acohol level, LDL/HDL, Trilycerides, IQ, relgious conviction, polictical conviction, diabetes, obesesity, or anyone of an all most limitless number of 'scales' that some more "proper" group may determine is 'inproper'. Lest anyone think that some of these 'filters' of unacceptable situations don't fit in to how society should police itself... they all lead to something (by heredity or otherwise) that 'harms' society in general.
What may seem easy for some to label as 'behavior' related is, for others an uncontrollable condition of life. Can we really mandate this?
