Smoking Ban

Nor will I. I have never smoked. I hate the smell. I do not like the cloud. I hate it when a smoker gets in my car, sits on my furniture, or comes into my office. I smell the residue long after that person leaves. I work with two smokers and every time one of them returns from a break, they bring a cloud in with them. With that said, I am not going to be rude that some folks are going to really have an issue with this ban.

I know that there is a conversation about who will stay away from the parks if the ban inside is enforced, however I am willing to bet a buck that before this announcement was made, Disney had some real data concerning the negative impact the smokers were having on the park, over and above attendance. The cost of continuing to allow smoking probably was more than just banning it inside the parks altogether.

Plus people adapt - I live near NYC and it was a huge deal when they first banned smoking in all restaurants and bars, but after a few years, people got used to it. I can see the same thing here - maybe take longer since people don't come as often, but after a few years I bet it will be more like "I can't believe they used to allow smoking in the parks"

Considering there will only be one DSA outside each of the parks, I really do hope that they plan on adding enough benches and shade to at least make it comfortable.

When my company was bought out, our new parent company made our campus smoke free. It was about a month later we got a letter from our neighbors asking us to please come out and clean up the street between our offices. No one quit smoking because smoking was banned on campus...everyone just walks or drives to the street, has a smoke or two, tosses them on the ground and walks or drives back. What the company did effectively was cause a lot of litter and make 5 minute breaks take 10. What do this have to do with this conversation you may ask? Just this...Don't be a bit surprised when butts start littering areas between the parking lots, the trams, the monorail, and the boats. Are they going to ban fatty foods since obesity is such a huge health problem in this country? I could go on and on and I have several times at the office but I won't today.

I mean..what you eat doesnt effect me, but when you smoke around me, it effects me.

I can could less what people do with their bodies, but smoking effects everyone around you.

I used to hesitate in reporting smokers bc I was never 100% sure if the area they were in was a designated area or not. I will not have to worry about that now. If there are more people like me, then there will be an increase in guests reporting smoking and thus, there will be more CMs made aware, forcing them to police this policy. That's my hope anyway. Lack of enforcement of the old policy lead to more and more guests smoking wherever they pleased. I saw it more and more each trip. As others have said, thats no doubt what lead to this stricter policy. So... YAY! I can take that path btwn Tommorowland and Fantasyland and not have to hold my breath!!!

similar thing happened at my high school when I was there - they banned smoking on campus so kids went across the street and then the people who lived there complained about all the butts on the ground and just all the kids on the edge of their property so the school installed a smoking section

I think the fact they will still have a smoking section, just in front of the parks, will help - probably would be a bigger deal if they said no smoking anywhere on property or something

Actually had some wreck into me while they were eating and driving soooo....
Here in Ontario that is actually not allowed. If you are caught eating, drinking or using your cell phone you are pulled over and given a ticket for distracted driving. You also aren't allowed to smoke in your own vehicle with children under 16 in the vehicle. All these things affect other people. What you eat does not impede anyone's health but your own.

Drunk drivers effect lots of folks...so is Disney going to ban alcohol? I'm going to go out on a limb and say no :)
However, second and third hand smoke has been shown to effect those that don't smoke pretty significantly. So someone can drink alcohol in a manner that won't effect the health and well-being of those around them (same as eating unhealthy). However, for a smoker it is already very difficult to do so, because while they can avoid second hand smoke (moving to a different vicinity) simply being around a smoker or in an area they previously smoked exposes you to third hand smoke.

Thought to be honest the main reason Disney made the change likely has little to do with health issues and more to do with regaining seating and specifically at DLR the loss of the DSA, which if I recall correctly is one of the entrances to SW:GE.

Oh, bars, etc. are responsible for Drunk Drivers if they reasonably knew the person was going to drive drunk in many states. Though not sure of Florida or California though (some states the bard doesn't even need to know if the victim can show it was connected they can get in trouble). Some states the bars are specifically required to have resources in place to make it easier to call cabs, etc (or even offer to do so themselves).

Are you driving in the parks?

Pretty sure they don't allow cars IN the parks but I drive to the parks every time I visit WDW. Maybe not every park day but most park days. And also to Narcoossee's if I have reservations there. WDW certainly doesn't seem to be too concerned with serving me a bunch a liquor and letting me drive by to my resort.

Because you're an adult and should be able to follow the law. Smoking and drinking aren't against the law.

I guess I have just had better luck that most with the rogue smokers and I haven't had much issue avoiding the dsa if I wasn't going to smoke. To me it just struck a cord like the ban at work. Smokers also pay $100 more a month for health insurance here because smoking is unhealthy and I worry about that slippery slope...Why not charge obese people more? drinkers more? people with longer commutes more? Where does the slippery slope lead?

A couple of years ago I stepped out of our room at CSR to eat a muffin, dude below us was out smoking. I couldn’t stand outside of the room with the amount of smoke and the nasty smell.

Resorts have designated areas for smoking also.

It’s nasty, and I want nothing to do with it.

The park dsa seem to be pretty out of the way for the most part. I can't really speak to the resort dsa bc I just haven't stayed at that many different ones.
