Smoking at the resort pools

I am hoping this will be the last post on this thread by myself or anyone. For those who had not realized, I did edit my original post yesterday. Even with it removed there are still people commenting on it who may not have even read it. I had also asked that if there was an issue with me personally on how I handled the subject to please PM me. To see that people still have an issue with me personally is upsetting. I feel that now any of my posts are being attacked by some posters on this board.

I should have just stated the facts initially and not allowed myself be open to this tirade that I am getting from people who don't know me at all.

I am probably the person you heard say good morning to bus driver everyday, thank you to any cm that helped me, "Hello" or "How are you?" to people I passed on the walkways at the resorts. I may have held a door open for you or helped you carry your tray to your table in the food court. I could have been the person who moved over at the parade to let your kids in front of me so they could see better, who played with your kids in the pool while you sunbathed or helped the life guard take the towels off the lounges so that you had a place at the pool.

These are the some of the things I did on this trip. People who know me know that I am not the horrible person you are all making me out to be. I am 99.9% of the time a very considerate and compassionate person. There is that .1% of the time that I may falter. I am only human.

I will ask the moderators to kindly close this thread or have it moved to the debate board.

For those of you who chose to view the post as what it was meant to be, informative, thank you. For those who were kind enough to PM me rather than flame me on this thread, I thank you as well.

If you are offended by cigarette smoke, Disney suggests you kindly ask the smoker to refrain from smoking around you. If they do not comply to your kind request, Disney suggests you find another lounge chair.

.

I'm just curious who exactly from Disney made these suggestions?

I think Disney's Pool smoking policy is completely fair. I smoke and when I was at the resort pool, I tried to sit away from people as not to bother them with my smoking. It frustrates me that I have read posts that suggest that their ought to be separate Pool areas for smokers, such as the quiet pools. Ridiculous. If it went that far, they should ban all alcohol products too at Disney Pool areas.

I try and be considerate of others, and I think the majority of smokers do too. We are treated like the 'black plague" with rude stares even if we are in our designated areas.

You can be assured, this smoker does not smoke in the vicinity of others. In the past, I did not see excessive smoking though at the Wilderness Lodge. They do provide ashtrays, and I did not notice any cigarette butts on the ground. Out of respect for my family we stay in a non smoking room. I hate the smell of smoked in rooms! It was actually a relief when we went to the WL that smoking wasn't restricted to a swamp or back area. :)

As a nonsmoker who could care less where people smoke outside - I think there are a lot of angry ex-smokers here. LOL
Nobody smokes in my house but you come to visit, and its bad weather outside, I let you smoke in my kitchen over the fan in my cooktop, and send the smoke to the basement, where it kills the mice, if any have taken up residence. LOL

Also you have to remember that Disney is an international destination. A lot of europeans and south americans are here that do not look at smoking as the next black plague. AS a matter of fact, I have a friend from Equador - whom on his last visit home went to a symposium entitled something like "America and losing your freedom". It pointed out how our government makes us wear seatbelts, tells us not to smoke, and it lasted about 3 hours how America is losing it's freedoms.

You brought out some interesting points in regards to freedoms and how Disney is a international travel destination. I just can't see the big deal about smoking "outside". Certainly, lobbies and restaurants I agree with should be off limits to smoking, or really restricted because no matter how great the ventilation is, the smoke is bothersome.

Disney does a good and fair job with their smoking policies, at least for the outdoor public areas of the resorts. I would have been very offended by the lady asking a lifeguard in front of me if smoking is allowed. Especially since there are ashtrays provided at the pool areas. The person was probably shocked that they were being scrutnized, but they should have said something like "look around, there are ashtrays." Obviously, if there were no ashtrays anywhere- I would safely have assumed smoking was not permitted or looked to see if there was a sign stating so. The smoker at the resort pool area probably felt they were being harrassed:mad:

I had a horrible experience at a public monument attraction about a month ago regarding smoking. I looked for the designated OUTDOOR area, in fact a employee was there SMOKING. I joined them and made pleasant small talk regarding the attraction. They left, I remained and a man walked past me with some other folks. Suddenly I hear him speak in a very LOUD voice, " Look at her, let's take her picture, she is smoking." I was absolutely shocked and horrified. I am sitting in the out of the way- clearly designated area, and now I am being harrassed. I decided to point to the sign, and I said "This is the designated smoking area." He laughed then loudly and screamed at me ,"Smoking Kills". His behavior was obnoxious and disgusting. The poor person sitting there smoking thinking they were not doing anything wrong- I can understand the embarrasement and perhaps the anger they felt at the public display.

getting a whiff of a cigarette outdoors poses a heath risk to no one.

Tigger Woods - I 100% disagree with your statement that "getting a whiff of a cigarette outdoors poses a health risk to no one". My nephew was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when he was exactly 3 weeks old & cigarette smoke is extremely dangerous for him & poses a serious health risk to him - I don't care if it is indoors or outdoors - cigarette smoke is cigarette smoke!!!!!

Also, my 11 yr. old DD has asthma & takes Pulmicort, Claritin & Nasonex daily. I WOULD think twice about taking her to a hotel pool that allows smoking. After all..........IT'S HARMFUL TO HER!!

As a mother and aunt I would never jeopardize the health of my child or my nephew.

Something that some of you are not considering is the following:

It's the outdoors. Any sort of vapor including smoke dissipates and is diluted. Comparing health risks or other health-related issues of secondhand smoke in the wide-open outdoors is different than having four walls around you.

The "dose", if you will , is a fraction outdoors of what it would be indoors. In fact,I believe the dose decreases proportinately to the inverse square of your distance from the smoker. In other words,if you are 15 feet away from someone smoking at a a pool area, at most 0.04% of it reaches you.

So those of you concerned about yourselves or others being harmed outdoors, perhaps you don't have to worry so much.
