Smoking - Are there Non-Smoking Cabins?

On the Wonder, are there non-smoking cabin areas? I understand that people are not supposed to smoke in their cabins, but can on their verandas. Are there some cabins with non-smoking verandas also? How do you protect against having someone on the next veranda puffing up a storm?

When we last stayed at Disney's Vero Beach Inn, we had a non-smoking room, but effectively could not use our balcony because of the smoke coming from the floor below us. I'd rather not have this happen on a cruise. My wife is allergic to smoke.

it's a potential problem.....there are no 'no-smoking verandahs'....
i've seen people post about this...that they couldn't go out on their verandah because of someone near them smoking up a storm....
i was very worried this would happen to us, but on our Wonder cruise i don't think anyone at all was smoking on their verandahs...i didn't smell even the slightest wiff of smoke...
however there is no guarantee this will be the case..
(in general, our cruise seemed to have very few smokers on it....even the adult clubs were almost smoke free.....and like your wife, i'm very very sensitive so i know when even one person lights up)....

i really think DCL should do something about this.....perhaps make a no-smoking side of the ship....that is, all the cabins on one side would be totally no-smoking, including the verandahs....maybe we should start a petition..

if you want a guaranteed no-smoking ship, i think that the carnival Fantasy is no-smoking....but i don't think the ship has verandahs....or not many....

That's not a bad idea. It wouldn't really infringe on anyone--at least, very little.

It's the Carnival Paradise that is smoke-free, but in no way comparable to a Disney cruise IMHO. If DCL were to make one side of the ship non-smoking, I hope it's the starboard side (my favorite)!

I am allergic to smoke and can smell someone lighting up a mile away, but we've had a verandah on several of our cruises and only rarely have I ever had a problem. A couple of times we had chain smokers next door (once someone who loved his cigars--ugh!!), but mostly it wasn't a problem. You can choose your stateroom carefully to minimize this problem...for example, in 5650 there is only a neighbor on one side of you. Of course, it has a metal verandah, but the same is true of 5622, which has a plexiglass verandah...it's the first stateroom in the hallway, so you get a little more traffic going by, but there will only be a person on one side. The area where you may have problems is Rockin' Bar D/Wavebands, as many of the non-smoking areas are right in front of the smoking sections, and the ventilation is bad. The only thing I go there for is the 70s party. Other than that, DCL is very good for non-smokers an also at providing places for smokers to light up.

Cap - I just prefer the view from the starboard side. I especially like that side at Castaway Cay, because the ship has backed in on both my cruises so far (and I hear does that most of the time there), giving me a <I>perfect</I> view of the "developed" area of the island. On the other side the view was loading/unloading dock and construction of sorts going on (some heavy equipment).

we were also on the starboard side and i really enjoyed watching the whole docking process at port canaveral (ok...so i'm a bit weird)....

i woke up at about 4 in the morning i think (there must have been noise on deck 9 that woke me...)
we were just coming up the channel to the port....
i was totally fascinated by the whole ropes thing....
and then watching all the activity of unloading the ship....
told you i was weird...

in nassau starboard was fun until we turned around to back in....then nassau was on the port side of the ship...so i watched nassau as we sailed away from up on deck 10 (during the sail away party)...

it probably sounds silly, but i really loved that part of the cruise...coming in to port and sailing away...

None of that sounds silly to me - also part of what we enjoy. Although I have to admit we weren't up quite that early in Port Canaveral.

Okay, for the opposite side of the smoking issue...I will be cruising with my smoker mother in February. I plan on booking either a Navigator or regular verandah. Where would you suggest I try to book for her smoking to be least intrusive on other guests? Also, do you think the smoke would hang around in the Nav verandah making it unpleasant for my son and myself?

As for the smoking issue, we are both non-smokers, so I'm not much help (although Eric DID smoke a Cuban cigar that he got in St. Martin on the verandah last week, and we didn't get any complaints . . . )

A Nav. verandah would probably be best if you are worried about your neighbors, but with a little common courtesy a regular verandah would be good too. Just don't stand at the rail to smoke when your neighbors are out, as that allows the smoke to drift right over. If you just sit in the chairs, it won't drift over as badly. Also, you could end up with smokers next door, so it might not even be an issue. Just pick the type of verandah you would like best! I've only been in a Nav. once, but I really liked it...very cozy. It's hard to say which is better because people have such different tastes (remember, I'm one of the weird people who likes the aft metal verandahs too).

Hey #1 Disney Family, The most exciting part of being on any ship or boat is watching the docking procedures so you certainly are not silly nor alone in enjoying this task. That's when all the fun stuff happens. By the way as a mechant mariner I have ta let ya know that unless it is tied to the ships bell, there are no ropes on board, only lines.

I love the idea of one side of the ship having smoke free verandas. And yes, give the non-smokers Starboard, as that's where I would normally be if Mom wasn't coming along!

Thanks for the comments on smoking on the verandah, Barb. I think I will try for a Nav verandah, but if I can't get it I might try for one of the metal ones you love so much. I prefer not to be mid-ship anyway, as I hate waiting and waiting for an elevator just to have it finally arrive overflowing, and I find the metal verandah intriguing. Hmm, maybe I'll even request the special Inkognito Cabin if you aren't sailing on Feb 2

I would guess that the only problem with the half and half concept would be the same thing I run into at restaurants all the time...much higher demand for non-smoking than smoking. 25 percent of the population are smokers, and many have family members who force them into non-smoking areas (such as my sister-in-law, who makes my chain-smoking brother sweat it out in non-smoking). At restaurants around here, seating in the smoking section is almost always available immediately, even when there are waits of 30 to 45 mins. for non. I guess it's because smokers can hold off from cigarettes during a meal, but non-smokers can't hold their breath for that long!

Around here ALL restaurants are non smoking...if they want to have a smoking section in there it has to be totally enclosed with its own ventilation system so you can't even smell it in the rest of the restaurant. You also cant smoke with in a certain amount of space from the front of hospitals and some other buildings. When I went down south I was shocked to walk into restaurants and smell the smoke right away since I am so used to everything being non smoking here! They are trying to now make bars non smoking too..

When we cruised we ended up having chain smokers right beside us. No they didn't smoke in their room but we had to keep our door closed at all times because the smell of smoke was horrible. They didn't seem to go anywhere except their balcony to smoke.
