I read a thread somewhere about smokers on balconies..

We have severe asthma in our family and that could be life-threatning!!!!!!!!!

Thought all of WDW resorts have smoking designated areas...Do people try to sneak smoking on balconies??????????

What can be done on the DVC properties if you happen to get assigned a unit and next door the people are smoking on balcony?

Much thanks! Made me quite uneasy!:scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1:

I seem to recall a story couple years ago bout a mom smoking on her Balcony and she was fined somewhere around $250.00. Then thinking she could not be fined again smoked again and was fined again and asked to leave. Was during Christmas time maybe 2007? Anyone else remember this story, so ya it does happen unfortunately....Shawnpirate:

Just because there are rules and laws, it doesn't mean that people will follow them.

I would report them to the Resort Management.

Just got back form the VWL and one annoying thing was the rear exit door (lake side) had a bench next to it that was always full of smokers. Since they always had at least a couple of people there smoking, I just assumed that that was the designated smoking area. Couldn't understand why the would put it right by the entry door that everyone must use.

Exactly right. The rule is no smoking on balconies, but there is no way for Disney to guarantee someone won't try to break the rule. Disney is no different than any other establishment anywhere in the country - the rule is there, the rule can be enforced with penalties, but that doesn't mean someone may not still decide to break the rules. Don't be any more afraid of Disney in this regard than you are at any hotel, restaurant, bar, street, house, structure, park, boat, bus, train, or plane in the world!

There are smoking designated areas...if you are not the typical 'I hate smoke' type and really well-and-truly have a severe risk of injury or death due to smoke, you may want to specify this to Disney when reserving or checking in, to make sure you don't get a balcony which sits right above a designated smoking area. I'm sure they'd accomodate you in that situation.

And if you ever happened to see someone smoking on a balcony, report them immediately - it's against the rules, and they will be stopped and fined. As a person with lots of smokers in the family, several of whom I travel to Disney with, they'd all agree - even some smokers follow the rules and would want those who don't reported!

I noticed the same thing at SSR - we had to walk through the smoker's area in order to go anywhere on leaving the building. Having grown up with smokers in my life, I respect their decision to smoke & not have to trek a long distance away to do so - but I really feel Disney could have at least created alcoves off of the main walkways to accommodate the need & with a bit of luck the smoke won't blow back toward the walkway. From maps, it looks like Kidani is set up the same way - to get to the bus stop, you need to walk through it to get there.

People should not be smoking in or around the rooms, this includes the balconies. If you see anyone doing so, please report them to a CM so the situation can be handled appropriately without upsetting your vacation.

If I had to report everyone that I saw smoking on his or her balcony during my last visit to WDW @ SSR I would have been at the front desk at least six times. I don't mean to report the same guest six times I'm talking six different guests on six different balconies.

Personally, I don't really care if guests smoke on their balconies as long as they close the door behind them so the smoke doesn’t blow into the room. In addition, I really don't want to play smoking police while I'm on vacation. If Disney were serious about this, they would have a cast member responsible for this.

In my opinion, Disney does not want to hassle guests for this and will only take action if another guest complains.

Count me in as a smoker that gets really annoyed when I see someone lighting up where they shouldn't be - and on multiple occasions I've confronted folks at WDW (both in the parks and hotels) and told them to find the designated areas.

Unfortunately, there are "good" smokers and "bad" smokers just like anything else, but I've found that unless you say something (or notify an employee/mgr) not even the dirtiest look you can muster is going to stop them.

IMHO there are plenty of spots to go light up (at least based on the rooms we've had) without breaking any rules, and I think Disney's done a pretty good job of keeping everyone happy.

Hey jerseygal,

Unfortunately, the world is full of folks who for whatever reason believe the rules apply to every one else and not them. :confused3 so you may run into some one smoking on a balcony. I wouldn't worry just yet about it, simply access each situation as it comes up. I will say that the one time I ran into a smoker at the pool and politely asked them not to light up due to my allergies. The lady was super apologetic and nice. :)

Just as an aside, I don't think we're supposed to discuss smoking except on one of the sticky threads? In any event, I reported a smoker last time I was at SSR--he was directly below and over one balcony and it blew directly up to my balcony--which meant I couldn't enjoy my balcony. (He was also a "loud talker" and constantly on his cell phone, but that was a different complaint and unfortunately one for which there is no Disney rule.)

I had to call the front desk two days in a row and after that didn't see him smoking.

We do not allow threads on the topic of smoking here on the DVC Boards. It is a resort policy, and you may want to visit our Resorts Board to see if there is a topic running there on smoking. Thank you.
