Smok'em if ya Got'em

The smokers who are not considerate of others will, in the end, be responsible for the banning of all smoking in any public areas. They want to do what they want to do when they want to do it, but all smokers will end up paying the price eventually for the ones who flagrantly disregard the rights of others. A little courtesy and self control would go a long ways in the way public smoking is regarded, but it seems that a few selfish smokers will end up causing all smokers to pay the price in the course of time.

Thank you to all the polite, respectful smokers out there - those who post here and otherwise :wave2:

I just want to echo those sentiments. I greatly appreciate those who follow the smoking designations. I truly hope the "others" don't ruin things for you.

what gives with the Disney "smoke only in the designated area" policy. Disney guests just seem to light up wherever they please

Look pal -- it's just like anywhere else in "real life" -- where you can 'showcase' people who follow the rules, and those who do not.

I'd say get a life--realize the shortcomings of people -- appreciate the people who do try -- and move on. :)

Being a smoker myself, I've been to both Disneyland and WDW. Both times, we followed the designated smoking areas to a tee. We just opened the map, and figured out where they were and we were fine.

I have noticed a few people walking around with lit cigarettes, and I don't agree with it myself. When we went to Seaworld in San Diego, there were no smoking areas or ashtrays. We read the map front to back and there was nothing. So, we hid in a corner, smoked our cigarettes, butted them on the ground and threw them in the garbage. Seeing butts everywhere is not fun (unless you are on a nudist beach)... ;) ;)

Nothing's going to change and nothing will happen to those people who smoke where they please.. Nothing you can do, but politely inform them where the smoking areas are..

So is NJ. They're talking right now about banning smoking in your own car!

I would love that for one, I hate having to roll up windows in traffic in order to not be subjected to the smoke!

I dont smoke, and ds has allergeries, to the point where I think I have "sympathy allergic reactions to smoke" :rotfl:

I agree with this poster, now can we get rid of the guys that spit whenever and wherever they please??? I think mostly they dont realize I have to walk in that yuck!

I agree about the smoking. Seems like most of the people smoking out of designated area are European, or are just pretending they don't speak English.

It's not just the guys spitting. As I was walking out of the bathroom at Journey into imagination, an older woman was walking past. She took a sip from her water bottle and spit it on the ground. I said, "eww gross," and a man walking near me, looked like he was in shock.

I have only read the first few posts on page one. I am not a smoker. However my husband is and if he is out in public he is really good about obeying the rules. Even at home he'll go down to the garage or out on the deck to smoke. The last time we were at WDW he used the desinated smoking areas without second guessing and I even noticed he went as far in as he could get, so he wouldn't offend anyone walking by who is a non smoker. Massachusetts is another Smoke Free State. Before I never paid too much attention to smokers, now that the law is in effect it's almost like a foreign smell.

If you're stuck in traffic, you're obviously not in a part of the country that offers a lot of fresh clean air. Why would you want to keep your windows open in the first place? If I'm stuck in traffic, my climate control is on and my windows are shut!

You guys are right! I was under the impression that the smoking only in designated areas was backed up by Florida Law. Turns out it's not. I checked every Disney Printed Document that I brought back from the trip, nothing backs up my Florida Law claim. I could have sworn I read it somewhere! Oh well, that why I'm a furnacefighter and not a lawyer!!

I better watch out or I'll have to go to a designated area on the DISboards where crazy old coots go when they post threads that contain wrong information. Sorry guys, please accept my humble apology. I was wrong, you were right.

Some folks also got the idea that I feel that all smokers at Disney break the rules. Thats not true, most smokers at Disney go out of their way to travel to a smoker's area. Thank you for your efforts guys.

So to clear the record Florida has no law that limits smoking in outside areas. BUT it should!!!!!

And I'm sorry, but not being able to smoke "outside" except for designated areas? give me a break!

The first thing to go when you are a regular smoker is your sense of taste/smell. Therefore, it is impossible for a smoker to truly understand how offensive the smell of cigarettes can be to non-smokers. When I had friends who smoked, I used to grin and bear it. When I would put the clothes I was wearing in my hamper inside my closet, I would often smell the smoke smell as I walked by the closed doors, the next day.

THAT'S how sensitive a non-smoker's nose is. I find it easy to determine if a smoker just took a smoke break, or had one two hours ago, by the strength and quality of the bad breath. Any non-smoker can tell if a room was ever a desingated smoking room (that's why motels/hotels designate their rooms smoking or non-smoking perminently). That's how sensitive a non-smoker is.

Someone previously mentioned about children being eye level with a cigarette, well this happened to me when I was a child. I walked right into a lit cigar and burnt my eye. Thank god it did not do any permanent damage but this is definately a health hazard. With so many little ones walking around Disneyworld it is bound to happen. The other thing that happened to me when I was a teen at Disney is someone discarded a lit cigarette on the ground and it ended up in my flip flop and burnt the bottom of my foot. Again not seriously, but still a health hazard.

Maybe this is why I never had the desire to smoke. :teeth: But as long as people have respect for those of us who don't smoke, I don't think badly of those that do.

First of all, I smoke as does my "other half".

I agree with those who cringe at the thought of some little guy getting poked with a lit cig. If the parks were "light 'em anywhere", due to their crowded nature this would happen on a daily basis.

The above being granted, the smoking areas provided in WDW "BITE". They are hard to find and are far too few based on the volume of people in the parks at any given time. Yes, I can read a map and did.

I'm not saying there should be a DSA around every corner, but without a doubt there should be more of 'em.

I'd love to see the trash cans in the DSA's a different color than the rest of the cans in the park. That little symbol is hard to spot. Also, some sort of colored light for finding 'em at night wouldn't be hard to do and would make things Soooo much easier.

We did stick to the DSA's as I try to be the least offensive to the non-smoking crowd.

BTW..snotty comments about my smoking by non-smokers in a public situation will NOT garner the response they may be seeking. LMAO......

Wow, we must be going to different parks. I love the DSA in WDW. Short of AK, I've never had a problem finding one. They usually provide benches, shade, and a good place to take a break. Especially the ones in WS, which are practically every pavillion. There's lovely ones right before Germany, right before Morocco, and in France, near the bridge. Oh, and a great little hidden one in the back of UK that nearly everyone misses.

I could probably list every smoking spot at WDW from memory and I assure you, you'd not have to walk more than 2 minutes from any given spot to find one.

I do agree with all in these posts who are annoyed by smokers in non-DSAs. We NEVER smoke outside of them, and if we are at our resort and smoking outside we make sure to stay away from any other groups of people who may be offended. Just remember courtesy on both sides though: there's nothing more obnoxious than a non-smoker walking into a DSA and complaining about the smoke!

Curiouser - I did that one time (stictly by accident) this was before I realized that Disney had started to provide designated areas for smokers. I was there with my mom and went to sit down on a nearby bench to rest my poor blister-covered feet when all of a sudden all these people came up and one by one starting lighting up. I was like what the...? I suddenly spotted the little sign that indicated it was a smoking area - aha! I said to myself as I made a hasty retreat. I appreciated all the people who were respecting the rules and going to the designated area (it was my unobservant self who was at fault for venturing into smokers' territory) made sure I haven't made that mistake again.

Disney property...Disney rules. You wanna break - go open up your own theme park where people can smoke whereever the hell they want.

I am a non smoker with an allergy to cigarrette smoke and ITA with smokers only smoking in designated areas but, isn't this comment(along with a previous word used in an earlier post of yours) just a little harsh on a fellow diser?

I have no problems using the designated smoking areas at the park. You meet the nicest people in there, really. Every single time we've taken a smoke break, we've always ended up making new nicotine buddies.

However, as a smoker, I'd really like to say that the people who decide to plop themselves down in the smoking area and then start coughing and whining should get lost and shut their obnoxious mouths. If I'm going out of my way to not annoy others with my choice to smoke, they can go out of their way and walk another five feet to find a bench outside of the smoking area to take their break at, and get out of my face. Especially the woman on the last trip who decided that the smoking area was a good place to change her baby on the bench and then complained about the smoke. classy.

I have to disagree. I have never seen any of the DSA's with more than a few people at them, even during peak season. They are clearly marked on the maps and never more than a short walk away. Additionally I think the idea of a colored light or garbage can would take away from the theming/atmosphere and be completely out of place. There are 20 DSA's in Epcot compared to only 13 park (not in a restaurant) bathrooms. Everyone needs to use the bathroom, while only a small percentage need to use the smoking areas and there are far more of them.
