Small vent- when will people learn that Snopes is their friend?

I remember back in 2004 there were chain emails going around about Mel Gibson being disfigured after a beating. This was around the time Passion of the Christ was in theaters. A couple of years before I read about the urban legend on snopes. My parents received the chain email and told me about it I show them the snopes entry telling them wasn't true. I told not to believe everything they get in emails.

Does anybody remember the "Eddie Murphy / elevator / hit the floor / big bouquet of roses" story? :rotfl2: I mean, that's the version as I first heard it - and of course it happened to somebody my mother knew... or was it a friend of somebody she knew...?

I personally don't care if people send me stuff. They are only doing out of concern or trying to help. I will never get mad over that.

I have found that most of the time snopes is accurate but not always.

Yeah, that. Hitting "delete" really isn't that big of a deal to me.

I have some people like that too. I have some filters set up in my inbox for those people that does a pretty good job of weeding out the forwarded garbage.

The worst is when people send Power Point shows of cute things or anything really, or PDFs of the same. It never ceases to amaze me that people will open these programs which can contain all kinds of malicious code. No wonder bot-nets end up with 40 million drones.

We had to set up a filter on our firewall at work that blocks all Power Point attachments and most all attachments for some of our employees. I really don't feel like spending a weekend cleaning the computer equivalent of AIDS off of our servers because someone wanted to see a Power Point slide show of puppies. :sad2:

This is what I worry about the most-I don't want virus' and crap on my computer. I just delete it but not everyone that uses my computer is as careful with stuff like this. :rolleyes1

This is a pet peeve of mine, too. There are some that instill fear and even hate. It's just wrong.

Has anyone gotten the one about how Snopes is run by a liberal couple and they often say that things are not true if they favor conservative causes.

Unfortunately, I can't go to Snopes to find out if that one is true.:lmao:

um, I am 53. maybe people "in their 50's" seem old to you. and unchangable. but you'll change your mind about that.
don't worry. when you reach 50, you'll become a lot more flexible.

Oh for Pete's sake...

I was talking about my aunt. If you'd like to take a whack at explaining why the emails she sends around are ridiculous and how/why she should verify their accuracy, be my guest.

For my part, I think that making it to your 50's and beyond has earned her the right to be who she is. Who am I to tell her to change? It doesn't seem worth trying to change such an ingrained way of thinking over something so harmless.

While it may not be your intention, you're painting all 50+ persons with the same broad, not exactly positive, brush. "... think that making it to your 50's and beyond has earned ..."???? Aging hasn't "earned" me anything.

pearlieq: LOL.... my aunt is the same way, and she's well over 50 now. So at least yours isn't the only one in this catagory.

My aunt fills my email with FWDS all the time. And very very rarely on occasion will she send me something that I actually need to read. So any email from her is tossed into a seperate folder, which now contains about 150 unread mssgs from her, and a handfull of them I've actually read. What's really annoying are the ones that have been around the block a lot longer than she's been online... So there's some that I get that I've gotten a half dozen times before her.

Some people believe anything they received in the mail, they don't even know who send it but they think is true. I hate those e mails. I still get the darn e-mail about Oprah and Tommy Hilfiger (sp?)

Huh? I don't want the e-mail.. but what about Oprah and Tommy Hilfiger (spelled fine, by the way ;)).

According to this long-running email rumour, Tommy Hilfiger publicly admitted to Oprah that he wished African-Americans, Hispanics, Jewish people and Asians would not buy his clothes because "they are made for upper class white people". Supposedly, Oprah then asked Hilfiger to leave her show. The message urges recipients to fight against racism by boycotting Tommy Hilfiger products and passing the message on to as many people as possible.

OP stepping back in to say I'm turning 53 on Wednesday.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I hope I'm not to stuck in my ways to improve in any way I need to. :thumbsup2

I know! Now I'm afraid to take the classes I was planning, this spring and summer, to get a certificate in accounting (never mind the stand-up comedy or the improv or the get funny classes!)!

The only thing that works for people like that is to "reply all" and tell them it's a hoax, attach the snopes link, and to stop the forwards. Basically embarass them. Our assistant principle replied to the entire staff and I :rotfl:. It worked like a charm! :thumbsup2
