Small point contract through resale- different use year

Hi everyone, looking for some thoughts on a possible add on. We bought into DVC whilst at WDW in August. Never really entertained the idea before the trip, but we got pixie dust sprinkled and were upgraded to the Grand Floridian, this led to the chain of events and us signing on the dotted line!

Being in a different country and in holiday mode I didn't want to leave us stuck by jumping in with a massive contract- thinking we can add on when we return next year. Of course since coming home and researching I've found out about the resale market.

I've been looking and only need a small contract, just 50 points, to leave us with the amount I would comfortably need for our yearly holiday. (for the time being anyway- I have a feeling buying more points could very easily become an addiction, lol.)

Ive found a loaded contract at I price I would be happy with- only problem being the use year. Our current use year is august, this one is february. DH doesn't think its that big of a deal and wants to go for it whilst we have the funds available and wouldn't have to rely on finance etc.. I'm not so sure, with the different use years that would mean we would have a different member number for those points and I could see it getting a bit complicated and confusing.

So whats everyones thoughts? Will it be a major hassle like I think and better to see if something comes up at a later date with the same use year? Or listen to DH and just go for it and revel in the fact I would have more points?

For only one trip per year, I think that keeping all your points under only one membership is the best. Some users around here have more than one Use Year, but most of them travel more than once per year to WDW so they can use different Use Years points for different trips.

Thanks for your responses. I guess it is manageable, i just didn't really want the confusion as this is still new to me. I think I will just mull it over for a while longer, although DH is more of a suck it and see type! I see a long debate with him this evening when he gets in from work.

Did you buy VGF and you are looking to add on there or somewhere else?

Hi, yes we bought in at VGF. We are looking at adding on at SSR. we are planning on doing split stays holidays for the foreseeable future so home resort for the second contract wasn't as big of a deal. As long as I can do a week at VGF I'm not overly fussed on the second week- looking forward to trying all of the resorts.

My suggestion is that you try the resorts out first then buy where you love to stay. We bought way too early and now own resorts that we rarely stay at.

We also have 2 UY's, they are manageable but if you don't need them for a specific reason, why add extra work and more to track.

Take your time and wait for the pixie dust to settle, you are still in your honeymoon phase and you know what happens after it ends.

Don't buy on emotion, take the time to learn the ins and outs of ownership before you spend more money.

Thankyou for your input Bill, this sounds like sound advise.
My DH did take it on board- kind of! He decided to have another search and has found a contract with 100points for sale with the same use year as we already have. The home resort is Saratoga, which we know we like and would enjoy staying at. Hes put an offer in this morning, so hasn't waited to let the dust settle. Im happy though, we travel to WDW every year for 2-3 weeks so we will definately make good use of the additional points, and buying them whilst we have the funds there makes more sense than waiting and not having the money readily available in the future. Crossing fingers the seller accepts and that we pass ROFR now.

Just wanted to add one more thought (to ease any concerns that may still be lingering and/or for anyone else in a similar situation)--

Small contracts (100 points and under) are in shorter supply than bigger contracts...finding one w/your use year at a resort that makes you happy isn't going to be an every-day occurrence. So this is one factor (among many) that argue in favor of your decision to "jump." Of course there are other factors to consider, and some may suggest going more slowly. The final decision is really a "balancing act."

And one more thought: frequently folks are advised to try out/stay at resorts prior to buying...often, that's easier said than done! Most people have limited time/chances to travel to WDW. Some don't mind split stays; others would rather avoid them. With so many DVC resorts now open, it could take years to try out all the resorts prior to buying. With price increases going the way they've gone over the years, the time to try out may be an unwieldy extra burden on the decision-making process.

Finally: the 11-7 home resort booking advantage can be important...but for many of us, we don't book more than 7 months out anyway. And at that point, "points are points." Buying into "the wrong resort" can be a serious error, but it can also be, at the end of the day, no big deal.

Bottom line: Buying DVC points is a complex decision. There are no easy answers for most people--even the much-touted "buy where you want to/don't mind staying"...

In any event, for the OP, it's now a moot point. So, I'll end with repeating my "congrats" and hopes that you thoroughly enjoy your stays/points/purchase!

Thankyou again everyone. Unfortunately this particular contract obviously wasn't meant to be as when DH sent the offer in he got told it had just sold

Never mind though, we are in no rush and have both agreed we will just keep our eyes open until the right contract comes along.
