We are planning on purchasing a small contract direct approx 50 or 75 points at OKW or a similar size resale at AKV or extend OKW. We have rented points the past few years and fell in love DVC. The plan is to pay cash for the direct points and start our DVC adventure with the ability to transfer points into our account as needed and have more control over reservation instead of using a Rental companies. I'm just looking for some feedback from the experts before we pull the trigger.

TIA

You will be limited to one transfer in or out each year, as will any one you get that transfer from. So they are not going to be looking at small transfers. They usually want to transfer a whole lot of points. If you are looking at 20-25 points, I'm not sure your plan will work very well. Most of the brokers will not transfer points, just rent out the reservations. So you'll have to find the members to transfer to you.

Thanks for the insight. I just want to confirm that banking points is not considered a transfer.

It can work. I'd look for points either early in their current UY or even before the UY begins.

The forum's sponsor, the timeshare store, is a broker that includes transfer options in their emails. Most are going to be OKW and SS, but've also seen Boardwalk and AKL in the last few weeks. Like was said, they are generally going to be larger contracts of at least 150 points. *But* if the points are bankable then you can really stretch them out.

I understand why some owners are hesitant on both ends of a transfer, but unsure why more brokers don't offer a transfer option. If someone wants to unload points it seems easier to do it one irreversible transaction then potentially many smaller transactions.

No, you can bank or borrow without any problem. BUT, you limited to how late you can bank those points. You have to do it during the first eight months of your UY. If your UY is Sept, you cannot bank points after April 30.

If you do get a point transfer, those points will maintain their UY and home resort. So you can't transfer in OKW points with your 25 BLT points and use them at 11 months out to book BLT.

DVC has a rule against being compensated for point transfers, thats why more brokers don't get involved.

Keep in mind that transferred points do not show up in your online account. This means:
  • You will have to call MS to use them.
  • You will have to be extra careful to keep track of those points to avoid losing them.
  • Waiting an hour for MS to open to make a reservation could easily result in you losing out to someone who books online and has an hour head start on getting the reservation you want. Studios often disappear very quickly at the 7 month mark.
Your plan is workable, but it will require some compromises if you need more points than you have for a reservation.

You state: "...purchasing a small contract direct approx 50 or 75 points at OKW or a similar size resale at AKV or extend OKW. " Why don't you consider buying a slightly larger resale - like a 100 - 120 point contract that has banked points? You can roll them forward and have a good size buffer without having to transfer points (at least initially). Price per point is lower than direct and the points are yours.

I was actually considering doing something similar, but using a combination of banking and borrowing and the "one time use points" through Disney. Are you able to still purchase up to 24 one time use points on a resale contract?

Yes, you can still purchase OTUP.
Just know that OTUP can only be used at 7 months, so you wouldn’t be able to use them to book your home resort at 8-11 months.

But you could reserve as many nights as possible with the points you already have. Then at seven months out, you call MS right at 9am ET to purchase the OTUP and add any nights you still need.
