So we r leaving for topsail nc. Haven't been to the beach in years and not with a Slr. Any tips for safety when using and not sung it. I'm only going to use my rebel ti with a cheaper canon lens vs my regular stuff. My plan was to only take it out if the wind was calm. I have a uv filter I front of my lens. The lens and camera is insured. I was going to keep it wrapped in a bath towel in a backpack when not using it. Any suggestions tips? The people we are going with wanted my to take some pics of the family for Xmas cards this year. I was going to use my regular setup for that cause I would be carrying it, shooting and then back up to the house. I figured before dusk would be the best time to shoot if the wind was calm. Is salt water spray going to be an issue even in. All wind. I won't be right down on the water cause I know it will be then cause that I remember when surf fishing. The salt wrecks reels after a while.

Thanks guys

Jim

I take my DSLR on the beach all the time. Of course, it's not top end, but I have never had a problem. I think you'll be fine if you keep it protected as you've indicated.

Have a great trip!

Just be careful close to the water, that's all. If you stay in 100-200 yards, you'll be fine. It will be windy though. Trust me. It's the NC coast. :)

I take mine to the beach whenever I have the chance. I do opt for the all in one lens for that occasion so I don't have to change lenses out near the sand.

Also, I would suggest not putting it in a bag, then setting the bag on the sand. Once people start moving around and sand gets on the bag, it's really hard to keep it off the camera. Mine is either on me...... or I put it back in the car.

My biggest advice would be just use common sense and it sounds like you're already doing that.

Thanks everyone. I never thought about not setting it on the sand. I would have. We are keeping a popup tent down the beach for the week for the kids. I'll hang it from the bars or I'll just run the bag up to the house, but I did want to have it with me so I can try to capture some good times.

I took mine to the beach last month. Unexpectedly strong gusts of wind came up while I was using it and the zoom lens got sand in it. It still works, but makes an awful gritty noise when I twist the barrel. One of those rain sleeves might not be a bad idea if you will be using a zoom lens.

Once on a beach holiday in France I managed to keep sand off the lens for the whole week I was there. Now the pomegranate yogurt was the stuff that killed it!!

Cheers Larry.

just wanted to share that all went well on the beach. no damage or sand. keep it hung on our popup tent in 2 diff bags sealed. only took it out for shooting. did have to keep it in a plastic bag outside in the morning for at least an hour cause of the humidity. worse than when at disney!
