I agree! Light-hearted topics are always welcome. If you want to tangle with someone on the internet about serious topics, there must be plenty of places for that.

My thoughts on this are……

If you don‘t like threads like mine, that’s ok, they aren’t for everyone. Don’t complain about them, post your own thread(s) about topics you‘d like to discuss. If you aren’t posting, then don’t complain about the CB being slow, because it’s non-posters that contribute to the slowness. If you don’t like posting threads, that’s ok, just don’t complain about the ones that do. And if it really bothers you that people like me post inane, silly and mindless threads, then feel free to hit the ignore button - I won’t be offended.

Not that anyone cares what I think but I think your threads are great. You are engaging and super creative. I hate the ones that people refer to where the OP never responds and the "songs that start with..." which I'm not interested in but it's easy enough to ignore them. I think you come up with some great topics and I'm always impressed how you have so many fresh ideas.

Traffic took a hit when the original Debates Board perished, but possibly in a good way! It shrunk again when all political and religious posts were banned. Since then I've noticed a slight decrease in traffic as most social media popped over to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, et al.

You have obviously been around longer then this screen name has, since the debate boards have been gone for close to 20 years. And politics and religion at least 10.

I'm a long time lurker and poster on satellite sites. Eventually took the plunge when things got less scary! I mean, yes, traffic is down, but I'm actually a fan of the fluff

As for 10 - 20 years, seems like only a few!

Well, some of us old timers remember those topics used to be allowed here. The decline in traffic here is in part related to those restrictions.

Seems like there used to be a good bit more volume of post and detailed discussions on pertinent topics before.

Trying to get rid of me? I've considered it, actually more and more lately. But there's still a handful of posts that keep me interested (not as many as in the past though).

I'd enjoy seeing more threads on "hot topics." I've seen threads get locked or go poof for reason I don't understand because it seems that there were no reason for them to be. But I also don't mind the random fluff threads because they are entertaining.

I'm firmly convinced this is due to posts being "reported". You'll never know who, but in my mind, the people who routinely post in threads only to imperiously notify the group that posts are outside the guidelines, or off-topic, or tell others their opinion isn't welcome or just post the popcorn or pot-stirring emoji, are the most likely culprits.

The topics I'd like to see discussed are one that aren't allowed. No one is saying you shouldn't post your threads. They're not my style, so I don't read them. I'd just rather see more "controversial" threads than "fluff" threads.

It’s all good I wasn’t pointing the finger at you. Until you posted I had no idea you don’t read my polls and that’s ok - they aren’t for everyone. I also don’t read posts that don’t interest me, and that’s ok. Personally….I do agree with you and others about controversial topics being off limits. I never participated in the debate board - it’s not for me, but it was definitely for others. I come on The DIS to stick my head in the sand for awhile to get away from the crazy realities of our world today. Do I think the debate board should return? Yes. Do I think people should be able to discuss topics like COVID? Yes. I just wonder if The DIS has the moderators that want to keep up with these type of threads. If mods are volunteers, which I’m assuming they are, that is something they’re probably not wanting to sign up for.

If I had to guess, I’d say no one is referring to your posts. You participate in your threads and they are very different day to day. I think they’re referring to the ‘if you were a dog, what would you do all day’ type posts.

To me, it feels like a lot of the fun has left this place. We used to have threads that were actual conversations because they were happening so quick. I can remember threads where I was bent over from laughing so hard. It feels way too managed now, if that makes sense.

I couldn’t agree more - my posts are part of the group mentioned. I know my polls are mostly fluff, and that they aren‘t for everyone. The CB is slow, no doubt, but there’s lots and lots that can be discussed and all these topics don’t have to be topics that will get locked. I will agree that a lot of fun seems to have been lost, but fun is contagious and if we try hard, as a group, to bring the fun back, then I think we can do it. I appreciate your kind words about my polls - it’s very appreciated

The biggest difference with your contributions versus some of the others - you actually take the time to generate a topic which draws engagement from the community and includes your participation in a thoughtful way.

Some of the others seem to be manufactured to just draw attention to themselves …

I don't really care why a thread gets deleted/locked or exactly how it happened. I belong to a number of other forums and they have mods just like here who keep things from going off the rails. No good is ever going to come from trying to discuss controversial topics regardless of whether it is about religion/politics/global warming/etc. Each site is free to make their own rules on what is/isn't allowed as a discussion topic.

No one is going to change their mind about something they feel very strongly about just because someone else tells them they are wrong. Usually the rhetoric just escalates from there and accomplishes nothing. Part of why social media gets to be a free-for-all is due to a lack of effective moderation and the fringe element thinks by grabbing the microphone and shouting the loudest/longest, they will somehow convince others of their point of view.

100% Quantity definitely does not equal quality. There are some people who put significant time and effort into verbose and prolific responses that are solely to make themselves feel more important and/or to be contrary.

However, the DIS would be a bore without them.

I actually have learned things and adjusted my perspective and opinion on several things by reading some of the things here. There are certainly things I won't change a view on but I am thankful for different opinions because it makes me reconsider at times.

I’m pretty sure you’ve had at least one other user name here, or else you have a virtual doppelgänger who even has a dog with the same name as yours. ;-)

It’s not a big deal. I know a few posters who have used different user names.
