Slobs & rude people at the pools

As for the rest of it, there is more than one way to look at it. If people leave their wet towels around, Disney has to have someone on staff to pick them up. Same with garbage. The more we pick up after ourselves, the fewer people Disney has to hire -- and the more free labor Disney benefits from.

If you are a recreation cast member, in addition to pool lifeguard duties, you are rotated on "towel patrol". Meaning cleaning up wet towels, replenishing the clean ones, etc. The way I've always thought of it though is I'd rather have those same Cast Members focusing their attention on the POOL (and hence the safety of swimmers) rather than cleaning up endless mounds of wet towels. It takes a second for a family to clean up, I don't think it has anything to do with Disney not hiring enough cast members to do it for them though. Just my opinion.

I don't understand your post. Why is it short-sighted to leave wet towels and garbage around and thereby save someone's job? Will Disney close down because they have to hire one more minimum-wage worker at each resort to pick up towels? I don't think so. And, that minimum-wage job may mean everything to the employee!

Leaving your mess will not save someone's job. That is not the way a large corporation like Disney operates. In fact, I own a small business & when people are rude enough to leave messes around, my other employees pick up the slack. I do not hire additional help.

It is niave (sp?) to think that Disney management will walk around a pool thinking they need to hire more help because some guests are rude. They will make sure that current employees do a better job of "patrolling" the area.

People either don't get that, or they don't want to get it. I hear comments like that all the time in the store I work at. People make a mess and then say something like "Leave it for the clerks, it is their job to clean it up". Yeah, it is PART of my job, and now I can't do something else I am supposed to do because people are slobs and can't clean up after themselves.

OP--I would have moved that stuff off of the table too.

I wanted to mention that we've encountered these same issues at resorts outside WDW. We had to send DH down to the pool to get chairs (he sat right there though, didn't leave a towel and come back) at the Ft.Lauderdale resort we stayed at and in Myrtle Beach. Those chair takers are everywhere.

I normally try to stay out of touchy threads but just a few comments on this one.......I would never ever touch any one else's belongings at a pool area. I understand what they did was try to reserve a spot for themselves for when their park break was on and they were ready to cool off at the pool. I agree 100% this is wrong. That being said, if I knew this to be the situation, I would have let a CM handle it if it bothered me that much, but I wouldn't myself do it. I guess I don't much pay attention to what other people are doing........I just sometimes am oblivious because most times I don't care what others are doing.

I'm with you here. I cannot imagine spending my time watching the hours tick by on someone elses business. If wouldn't touch someone elses property either. If you're really in a knot over it, let a CM handle it. Were you prepared for an ugly confrontation if they had come back when you were moving their things? That would have been a whole different thread!

Don't get me wrong. I agree it is rude to all of the issues you brought up. But I don't spend my time being the pool monitor.

Considering we were in the little alcove between the main pool & the kiddie pool (behind/next to the playground) it wasn't difficult to realize that they weren't there. In fact, our table was right next to theirs.

Yes, I was prepared for a confrontation. It would not have bothered me.

Why is it your business? Really? Who died and made you the pool monitor? I just don't see the point to feeling like it is your job to monitor other peoples behavior. There will always be rude people. There will always be people whose behavior we do not agree with. Why waste your joy in the day and your energy being their enforcer?

Bottom line is, you're right, it's not my business what they are doing or where they are. I could care less where they are.

I don't think the OP set out to be the pool monitor. Sometimes you can't help but notice things. If I saw someone struggling with a tray, looking for a place to sit and knew that someone had abandoned their stuff at a table, I would feel I had a right to do something about it.

But the OP didn't just arbitrarily move the 'abandoned' property because it was annoying them by being there so long. She did it because another Guest was in need of a table, and this one was obviously not being used.

The OP happened to be aware that the table was not being used, because she was at the adjacent table the entire time - with, possibly, short breaks for swimming, food, etc.

This was a problem at Beach Club as well. There were many rude slobs at the pool. They would leave their chairs full of wet towels and uneaten food and pack up and leave it all there for someone else to clean up.

I did the same thing as OP, and I would occasionally clean up these chairs when I saw other people looking for somewhere to sit. I did not have a problem myself finding a chair, usually between 1-2pm. I would pick the first available chair, then watch for people to leave. I always had a poolside seat within an hour.

There was so much chair-hogging going on at this resort, as entire families would claim 4-5 chairs and then leave to swim or whatever for hours. They only really need 1-2 chairs for their 'stuff'. This needs to be monitored by Disney: they are so obsessive about rules, I don't understand why they let people abuse the pool area.

This is a worldwide (not just DisneyWorld) theme. We've gone to resorts on islands, and people "reserve" their spots by leaving items on various tables/chairs, etc. One place my husband and I stayed @ on the outer banks in NC, the "People" would start putting their towels on chairs/tables the night before! We are early risers, and to our dismay, every morning, at about 6:30am - we love sunrises, passing the pool area on the way to the beach, not a chair was to be had - seriously - not one! After a few days of watching this going on - we would pick up towels/bags, etc. on the walk to beach and pile them up onto one chair, same thing on the way back from the beach, stacking them onto another chair. When we would return to the pool area after breakfast, there would be 1-2 groups at the tables or chairs, and guess what, we would get a front row seat watching the towel dropper/chair saver people coming down around 12 - 1pm and their most "prized seating would be gone".
One morning we saw one of the maintenance guys cleaning the pool/spa, and we went about our routine picking up towels, etc. on the way to the beach, told him what we were doing, he laughed & said he wished he was around to see the returnees and the mayhem that ensued. The next morning there was not one single saved chair/table, but we did see a large pile of belongings in one corner and a notice by the pool bar stating "there was to be no saving of seating, for everyone's enjoyment".
Guess it just takes one person to start something, and other people just follow like sheep. To the OP it also takes one person to start to put a stop to it. Kudos!

Weren't they the least bit worried about someone taking their stuff?! Not to mention what they did was extremelyrude.. but if they came back to find their belongings missing.. they would have had nobody to blame but themselves..

I personally cannot see how someone could be that rude, especially having children, they should be considerate and realize that some poor family is going to be wandering around looking for a place to sit.. ugh.. everyone just thinks of themselves these days..

Last time we went, we were in line for K. Safari at AK.. and this family.. VERY obviously was budging everyone.. the father was leading it, and honestly did not care if everyone knew what he was doing, he was budging children.. yelling at his wife and kids telling them to catch up with him (I don't think they liked what he was doing...) and nobody said anything cause this guy was scary looking, never cracked a smile the entire time. I was a little bothered...

...and EVERY time I go to the World.. I see AT LEAST one frantic idiot spazzing out about getting onto a bus! Like there isn't another one coming in five minutes tops! The last time hubby and I were there I'm not kidding.. this guy came hauling across the parking lot at POR to the south depot.. he was pushing one of those little fold up strollers (yes with a little one in it) and he's running at top speed.. and JUMPS the curb with the stroller to catch this bus, and everyone standing there is in shock, because I mean one pebble in the way and this guy AND his kid are eating pavement...
