We’re Houston area and it’s a similar experience. I once put on a guacamole competition for my old work team and it’s funny how something as simple as avocado can be so different between several people.

Indeed…!!! 🙂
My BIL and his wife live in Spring.

BTW…
I thought I recognized you from another site…! 😉

I love it, but DO NOT put any tomatoes, cilantro, or fresh onion in it. Gross. A little onion powder is ok, but raw onion is gross.

I grew up with authentic guacamole in our house. I can’t stomach the weird variations with sour cream or yogurt. That’s not guacamole.

My family’s guacamole has: tomato, onion, fresh jalapeños, cilantro, lime juice, salt and that’s it. That’s the Texas border town version of Mexican guac I grew up with. But in Mexico, they don’t usually put tomato.

We’re not too far from there.

Yeah, I’ve had accounts on both for some time. I like posting my trip reports over there and have some people I communicate with more frequently, but there’s definitely more activity in the community section over here.

Y’all should do a queso competition next!

True story…when I first started at my company (nearly 30 years ago), we were putting together a training class potluck. Someone said they were bringing queso and I had no idea what it was. I had been in Texas for about 5 months at that point and was clueless!

That’s pretty much the version we make, and we go pretty easy on the salt.
We’ve had guacamole in Mexico at 3 different places in Cozumel on cruise excursions. 2 were restaurants, and the other was where we made our own guacamole. Indeed, no tomatoes.

I’ve been on the other site since 2012, but was on one previous to that beginning in 2007. That site eliminated their boards and moved messaging to FB, which I didn’t want to be on and still don’t.
I lurked here from time to time, but finally joined when I went off on a thread over at the other site and got banned for 10 days…!!!!! 😎😁🤣😉

I can’t imagine a life without queso! Glad you made it here to the land of great Tex-mex.

True story of my own… we were in South Dakota for about 6 weeks for a work thing a long, long time ago. Needless to say we were jonesing for Mexican food. Sioux Falls had one Mexican-ish restaurant so we tried it out. We ask if they had queso and they said what is that? I tried to describe it: melted cheese and named the different ingredients you put in it. They said, “we can make that.” Then they came out with a greasy bowl of yellow cheese slices barely melted (still squarish) with some salsa-esque stuff on top. We waited until the sever left the table and then could not stop laughing for a solid 10 minutes.

Texas has its many faults but the food ain’t one of ‘em!

We ate in Mexico a couple times a week when I was growing up. Our favorite restaurant made the best quacamole. It came as an on-the-house appetizer right after you were seated. Each person would receive a plate with one soft chicharron, topped with a spoonful of picadillo and a spoonful of guac. Heaven on a plate.

Back in the day I used to get chicharrones from HEB. The skin was crunchy, but there was always a generous amount of soft, tasty fat on the other side for a nice contrast…so good…!!!
Also, years ago I worked with a guy whose parents were originally from northern Mexico. He brought fresh food to the office daily, including picadillo. But, my favorite was the machacado…I coulda’ lived on that stuff alone…!!!!! 😋

Come to think of it, there was a third forum site that I was on for a bit. The site I was initially thinking of is where I'm listed as HouCuseChickie, but the other one, I was TiggerTrigger and I see they no longer have a forum. I cut way back with all of it when our vacationing started to change. Now I'm curious about what topic got you banned! 🤣

The site I was originally on was initially a “trivia” site and then became a “radio” site…not sure if that’s enough of a hint…?
I’m donaldtoo on the other site.
The banning involved one of the Splash/TBA threads. 😎😉😎

We had a similar experience with Tex-Mex in Montana! 🤣 I hope you got pictures of the SD queso attempt! We spent a few days in Rapid City, SD last summer, but I think a Chuy's experience a few days earlier while we were in Colorado cut the desire for any kind of Tex-Mex/Mexican for the rest of the trip. That being said, my initial reaction to queso was to try making it myself. Mine wasn't greasy. If anything, it was watery in some areas and crusty in others. Doesn't that sound appetizing!!?!? A coworker insisted I use Ro-Tel, but I think I missed something with draining. She also said I should be able to just leave it in the crock pot and let it do the work, but stirring seems like it would have been helpful.

Honestly, some of the best I've had at a restaurant is Guadalajara, but I think Guad is strictly in Houston and they've cut back on their locations. Theirs is a queso blanco. They used to cater a lot of our tax season meals and we'd go through gallons of that stuff since everyone would go back for chips and queso as a late after noon snack.

Yeah, Texas is far from perfect, but it really is a food paradise.

I saw the pic and I was pretty sure of the Donaldtoo. I'm fairly certain you're on the site where I normally do my trip reports, but I'm pretty sure I also know the other site to which you're referring. The reality is that a lot of us are on numerous sites and cross paths. I know the sites don't like members posting the names of other forums, but sometimes there's more activity or better info on one site vs. another.

Yeah, some of those Splash threads got pretty heated.

Yes, I’m using the same avatar as over there, and it’s where you do your TRs.
I never joined another site, as I was having a hard time keeping up with just the one. But, I don’t post there as much anymore, so I can handle the two now.

Those Splash threads got heated indeed…!

Now, time for some guac…!!! 😁😉🙂

I’ve never had it without fresh onion. I let the onion and jalapeño sit in the lime juice with salt for a bit.

We are huge avocado fans in this house. I make guac a few different ways. If I'm being a purist, it's mashed avocado with a trace of olive oil and some salt. If I'm in a hurry, it's mashed avo with a generous spoonful of chunky salsa, a shake of cumin and garlic powder, maybe some salt. The Resident 7-YO's favorite guac is when I mince onion, fine-mince garlic, add cumin and salt, sometimes a shot of hot sauce. He would bathe in this if we let him!

I am somewhat of a legend at our local tap room. Several years ago, for the annual Mug Club Superbowl Party, I made a VAT of guacamole. Thirty avocados met their end so the Black Bear Mug Club could enjoy guac and chips while watching the Pats win the Superbowl. People still talk about that Superbowl, and they still bring up that guacamole! It was AWESOME.

I don't like raw onion in general, not just in guac (same with tomatoes). I make it with avocado, lime juice, salt, and maybe some other spices (onion powder, garlic powder, maybe cayenne if I want some spice).

We make another avocado dip that's really tasty, too. Avocado, goat cheese, lemon juice, salt, pepper, cayenne, and cumin.
