The company I work for has had one for as long as I've worked for them (over 33 years) the first one was not great, just a row of units. The one we have now is inside and has AC.

We rent an outdoor lot to park our RV in. It's at a storage facility that has the rows of outside units and then a huge fenced in paved space for vehicles. Sadly, the fenced in part doesn't matter, someone broke into one of the under storage units of our RV and stole about $1000 worth of tools, including the tool box they were in (it was a huge 3 tiered one we had to move to the front under storage because the under storage it was originally in got wet). We assume it was someone who knew about RVs because the lock wasn't even broken. That particular under storage used the same key that every RV comes with. We have since changed the lock. The storage facilities camera didn't cover our RV.

Not now but I rented one on the metro-north train line Connecticut years ago when I was doing travel therapy. It stored my car while I lived in NYC--far cheaper than renting garage space in the city. It wasn't even designed for a car--it was just a wide and long enough storage unit that my car fit it. It was a bit dicey getting the car up onto the concrete slab the unit was built on, but it worked.

We’ve never rented one, we have a basement which is where all our “stuff” is stored. 🤣

Just like you’ve observed @slo, storage unit places are popping up all over my area of Ohio. Reminds me of the George Carlin routine about having too much “stuff”.

No need to rent a storage unit. Half the basement is finished for living space and the rest is for storage. We also have a backyard shed for the lawn mower, rakes, garden tools, etc.

No garage in a city row house neighborhood, so we do rent space for parking our cars a block away. On street parking is a hassle.

I've never rented one. I've often thought we could use one, but really, we just need to get rid of some stuff!
The only time I've ever really been involved with one was when my parents sold the family home to move into a condo. They wanted to do some remodeling on the condo, so they lived with my sister for a few months while that happened. We put their stuff into a storage unit, since they wouldn't need most of it while at my sister's... but would need it eventually. It was air conditioned. (I've heard too many stories of moldy mattresses or wood furniture drawers that won't open anymore after being stored in a non-climate-controlled unit. But, I suppose if you were storing 'outdoor stuff' it wouldn't matter as much.)

We had one for years to store christmas decorations, then concluded it was cheaper to just buy new ones every year. I have worked on the construction of many, they are cash cows. Once people get in the seldom leave and they just keep raising the rent

We've had one for a bit over a year, ever since DD and her husband moved in with us. Price keeps going up, so we went to look at it a couple of days ago. There's not that much stuff in there! We could definitely have used a smaller space but had to take what we could get. The goal for the summer is to get enough of the stuff in the basement organized so that we can move the storage room stuff into the basement and stop paying $170 a month to UHaul!

No, I have plenty of storage space. In fact, an excess of it.

I’ve heard of people renting out space in their homes for other people’s stuff.

My introductory price $10 per month for 200 cubic feet. 5x5 by 8 feet high.

For an extra $500 per month I promise not to peek, root thru, or use your belongings.

They certainly ARE all over the place. No, I don't have one and never have. Can't believe people just can't throw stuff away.
My neighbor's wife has complained their 1800 square foot house is too small for just her and her husband. They have a storage unit, and her husband is a contractor and has a warehouse for his work, and about a quarter of it is filled with their personal stuff.

We’ve never had one, but most people in our neighborhood use their garage for storage. We use it for cars. We do have a 8 x 10 shed in our yard ( again most people do) for storing porch furniture over the winter and our lawnmower and snow blower live out there too.

When my sister died, my other sister put some stuff in one for a little while. Years went by. She could have bought the kitchen set and stuff 5 times over for what she paid in rental fees.

No we don’t have one. My basement is filled with our stuff so if we didn’t have a basement we’d need one. We also have a shed in our yard that is storage also. Storage units are popular around here also.

The only time I've had one was when I sold the second most Girl Scout Cookies in the state of Florida and my parents had nowhere else to put them. :-)

We demolished our NJ beach house a couple of years after moving to California. All the NJ beach house stuff went into storage. It was about $200/month and had it for nearly 10 years. When we moved across country to a much larger home, we emptied it out and bought it to our new home. It was really all my husband's stuff.

When we redid all the concrete at our home some years back, driveway, garage, sidewalks, patio, we rented one of those PODS. They bring it to the house, you fill it up, they take it to their warehouse. We emptied the garage into one. They took it away. Every time we thing of having them return it to us for us to go through it, we get tired just thinking about it. So, it sits there, costing us money every month. And I am confident that 95% of it could/should/would be tossed. :confused3

I wish we had a shed. We have a 2 car garage, but only park one car in it because the other side is the mower, wheelbarrow, weed eater, blower, etc. All things we need and have to be stored somewhere.

I used one in the past, but not anymore. I rented one during a couple moves back several years ago. It was just the cheap outdoor kind.

We rented one years ago when we were selling our old house so we could declutter and move a lot of stuff that we didn't need in our house for the short term (e.g. Christmas decorations, etc.).

We haven't ever used a storage unit. We store our junk in the house and part of it in the garage. Most of the garage stuff, honestly, is my husband's junk and he hasn't touched the stuff in YEARS. However, he won't get rid of any of it. I regularly go through my stuff and our general household stuff and purge regularly. Otherwise, we would absolutely end up needing a storage unit at some point.
