I'm fine with either one - I wouldn't say they're my favorite side dish (my wife's sausage stuffing wins that prize), but it's always a solid staple.

I've made them both ways - usually, when making a smaller amount, like for a nightly dinner, I'll mash the potatoes with a fork (I keep meaning to buy a potato ricer as well as a masher). But for a larger gathering, like tomorrow, I usually will use the hand mixer.
That brings back memories. I haven't had sausage stuffing in years. My mom used to make it, not necessarily for Thanksgiving, but it was a special treat when she did make it for sure. Is her recipe secret or overly difficult? Thanks for the wonderful memory either way. :)

Hers is pretty simple - sauté onions and celery in a stick of butter, then brown a pound of sausage (sage flavor is our favorite). She'll do that the night before. Then the next morning, warm the mixture up, add a couple beaten eggs, chicken broth and poultry seasoning, then mix in cubed stuffing (we're basic - just the Pepperidge Farms stuff from the grocery store). I usually stuff a bunch of it in the bird and the remainder goes into a dish to bake separately. :thumbsup2

Thanks! Sounds delicious. Enjoy it. :)

As long as there is garlic and cream in them, and the potatoes are Yukon Gold potatoes, whipped or mashed potatoes are welcome on our Thanksgiving table.

I never met a potato I didn’t like but I rarely beat them due to the “paste” factor. I wouldn’t do it for a turkey dinner, but my favorites are probably smashed red potatoes with the skin on. :goodvibes
I was about to say the same thing as far never meeting a potato I didn't like. I don't care how you cook them, I'll eat them. I smash them myself instead of whipping them, it's just how I grew up eating them. Heck, there were times growing up that Mama had to use boxed potato flakes to make mashed potatos because it was the end of the month so Daddy hadn't been paid yet. We would go through all the fresh things early in the month and with 5 older brother's it didn't matter how big a bag of potatos you bought they were going to get gone. Put enough margarine (couldn't afford butter) and powdered milk (again with the fresh issue) in them and they were fine.

I'll leave my vote even though I don't think it fits your definition.

Mashing Potatoes and Whipped Potatoes are exactly the same to me, the only difference is you whip the "whipped" ones much longer. I used a hand mixer and whip them to a "mashed" consistency. Smooth with a few tiny lumps (I call them flavor buds) but overall smooth. The more they are whipped the more I feel they loose their flavor.

I’ll eat whipped potatoes if that’s what is served, but I only make kind-of-lumpy mashed potatoes, usually with garlic.

But no matter what kind, I NEVER put gravy on them. :crazy2:

I'm not sure I've ever had whipped potatoes, not knowingly at least or I've just assumed they were mashed.

Mashed potato is my least favourite way of having potatoes. I don't dislike it and will eat it if it comes with a dish, but I'll never actively choose it and never make it home.

Yum. 😋 Smashed red potatoes with skin on. Probably the best in the mashed/whipped category.

Irish mother always mashed them by hand. It's what I grew up with and what I prefer. DH doesn't like mashed potatoes so I usually bake or roast them now. My sister uses a mixer for Thanksgiving meals and I eat them. NEVER gravy!
