Thanksgiving is tomorrow for us Americans, which means we get to indulge in many of our favorites, and one of them is mashed potatoes. Growing up, I only had whipped mashed potatoes - my mom doesn’t make them any other way. I always liked them and never had an issue with them. Then I started dating my DH and mashed potatoes at his house and his parents mash the potatoes, and oh my, I fell in love with actual mashed potatoes. They are lumpier and thicker than whipped potatoes and they are so so so good. Here’s a little something about it….

My mom and MIL switch off every year with who makes the mashed potatoes and who makes the stuffing, and this year is my MIL’s year for mashed potatoes and I’m so excited. They hold my gravy so much better than my mom’s whipped potatoes, and it’s all about having nice firm walls for my gravy - LOL!

With all that being said….what’s your feelings about whipped vs mashed potatoes? Let’s find out….

What is your opinion of whipped and mashed potatoes?
(multiple choice)

*If you won’t be on The DIS tomorrow, I want to say Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

For Me…..I like 🙂👍🏻 whipped potatoes and love ❤️ mashed potatoes. I rarely make homemade mashed potatoes throughout the year due to time (if I made actual mashed potatoes after work, we’d be eating at 8pm, and I’m not doing that), so when we do eat mashed potatoes it’s instant mashed potatoes - they’re good enough. If I do have time to make actual mashed potatoes, I’m mashing them with a masher. In 30 years of marriage and living away from my parents, I’ve never whipped my potatoes.

I grew up making mashed potatoes never whipped and instant was NEVER allowed once I married I found out about instant so excited 😆 we eat them a lot I rarely make mashed potatoes but if I do I makes them with my masher after 30+ years I finally had to buy a new one
Now if I’m making sweet potatoes sometimes I will whip those but not always
If I’m making squash I just use my masher same way I make potatoes

If you’re not on here tomorrow I wanna wish you a happy Thanksgiving 🦃

I use my mixer to make whipped potatoes, with loads of butter. No one in my family wants lumps in their mashed potatoes. I use evaporated milk for the liquid.

whipped (still called mashed). Only way DD will eat them......no lumps, no skin (and that is why I will be the one making them tomorrow). I also add sour cream to them.
That's the way my mother made them.

I love mashed potatoes. I had to "fire" my husband as the mashed potato maker because he would always whip the potatoes. Whipping them makes them gummy, imo.

I make mashed potatoes at least twice a week. :)

I never knew that what I was making was Whipped Potatoes, until now!
This. Mom always used an electric beater and we always called them mashed potatoes. I tend to think most people call them mashed potatoes for either style.

The "whipped" texture is so much better than the actual "mashed" potatoes that grandma would make.

I never knew that what I was making was Whipped Potatoes, until now! My sister uses a potato masher, I use an electric beater, we both call them Mashed Potatoes! We both use butter and buttermilk as the liquid!
Same. I was today years old! My sister-in-law is super fancy and uses a ricer.

Given the choice, I prefer non-lumpy (but with a few lumps only so that people know they're not from dehydrated...LOL). As long as you don't whip them too much, they don't get gummy.

Can't say there's any potato I DON'T like.

I didn't really know there was a difference. I just thought some were more or less lumpy. I really like any, mashed or whipped. With the explanation, probably like mashed a little more.

Mashed potatoes always - to those who say using a beater can make them gummy - add room temperature butter, milk, sour cream (whatever) - the added cold stuff seems to interact with the starch in potatoes.
Also, I make my mashed potatoes a day or so ahead, then bake them covered till heated through - never time constraints! No instant potatoes here.
Happy Thanksgiving y'all - yum - my favorite holiday!

I have never had whipped potatoes unless it was in a restaurant and I just didn’t know it. I like my mashed potatoes (and my gravy for that matter) to have a few lumps. I actually like smashed potatoes the best, since they aren’t quite as processed as mashed potatoes. I don’t eat a lot of gravy though as it tends to disagree with my digestion so I don’t need my potatoes to hold a gravy pond.

I don't have a preference for the ones I eat. Making them it's mostly mashed. I haven't made whipped in a long time I think and didn't have a good masher.

I use a hand mixer and I consider my potatoes mashed, not whipped. The key is to underbeat, never overbeat or it starts to taste like glue. Mine are not super smooth. I always leave some lumps. They don’t taste whipped at all.
I never met a potato I didn’t like but I rarely beat them due to the “paste” factor. I wouldn’t do it for a turkey dinner, but my favorites are probably smashed red potatoes with the skin on. :goodvibes

I'm fine with either one - I wouldn't say they're my favorite side dish (my wife's sausage stuffing wins that prize), but it's always a solid staple.

I've made them both ways - usually, when making a smaller amount, like for a nightly dinner, I'll mash the potatoes with a fork (I keep meaning to buy a potato ricer as well as a masher). But for a larger gathering, like tomorrow, I usually will use the hand mixer.

This is why I thought for years I hated mashed potatoes. - My mom's were the gluey type. (And I was never a gravy fan at all.) Oddly, I did like the creamy instant mashed potatoes on the rare occasions we had TV dinners.

As an adult, I rarely make mashed potatoes, but I like the "smashed" kind I've had in restaurants. I will eat a bit of MIL's tomorrow, as hers are OK (...unless someone else brings the cheesy potatoes, in which case I'll choose those because I love them.)

Never made “whipped” potatoes before. But I do enjoy mashed potatoes making them tomorrow for the first time with sour cream, only because I have some left over in the fridge. Also trying the warm/hot milk trick this year.
