My mom used margarine, grandma used butter.

I use butter.
 

I thought you were specifically referring to transfats?
I wasn’t referring to anything other than the statement that margarine is now more healthy than butter. It’s better but it’s still a chemical concoction that has no natural basis

I have a couple of cookie recipes that are better with margarine they are older and originally asked for lard or crisco.

Me too. Rare occasions I will buy margarine because a chocolate chip cookie recipe is so much better with margarine. (I like chewy, not flat and crispy. Personal preference.)

Butter only. My sister does make scones on occasion and the recipe specifies margarine/Country crock, but that's the only thing we would buy it for. Haven't bought any in years at this point.
