I am up to four so far. They have been really sweet and juicy, even the first one I purchased early in the summer. It might have been for Memorial Day. Definitely by July 4. On sale for 3.99. Three out of the four have been perfect, the fourth just slightly less sweet, but still great.

Early in the season they seemed to be $8-10, and I was thinking longingly of when they used to be around 10 cents a pound. They have been on sale periodically for $4-5 though, so not too bad. The cut up ones I saw were 89 cents a pound.

I will say I don’t see the giant oblong watermelons which were common when I was young. Of course they had seeds though too!

We still seem to have the giant oblong ones around here. Our farmer's markets actually have more of those than the seedless. Costco also had them yesterday. I think I would have needed help getting one into my cart, they were just that big.

I will have to check for them at Costco next time I am there. Maybe it is a shipping thing, they don’t want to have to transport those huge watermelons too far!

i can buy a huge watermelon for $4-$5. Considering how many servings it provides it’s a good deal, versus blueberries which are usually the same price but fewer servings. i buy one every 2-3 weeks. Me and the kids eat it.

We only bought one. I don’t eat it and my dh only wanted one so far this summer.

We have bought three whole ones, and probably 8 cut up containers of pieces.

Like I posted, the season technically hasn't started yet. At least if you want a locally grown one. The first story I covered when I got into TV news in September 1977 was the start of the watermelon harvest season. Of course in many parts of the nation you can get watermelons year round from Mexico.
In Oregon, watermelons start in July and are sweetest in Aug/early September. It's the season right now for melons from Hermiston. Everyone's "local" is probably going to be a little different.
