Sleeps 6

Have read repeatedly here about the problems of families with 5 or families of 4 who want to bring along a friend. An upgrade to a 2-bedroom is a huge jump, points-wise, from a studio. So here's my question. Why aren't 1-bedroom units made to "sleep 6?" It seems a logical step. A studio sleeps 4 and a 2-bedroom sleeps 8. I understand that with a 1-bedroom you are paying for the kitchen and laundry, but surely they could have figured out a way to accomodate another sleeping body or two?

Just a thought. If the next DVC property offered "sleeps 6" rooms, I bet they would be a popular choice!

As far as "Why they weren't designed to sleep 6?" Who knows? I think DVC did it to sell the "spacious luxury" of a 1 bedroom. Can it be changed? Not at existing resorts, since that would be a significant change to what we were sold. Can it be done at a new resort...yes. I also think Disney tried to go with timeshare industry standards to more easily facilitate trade-outs through trade companies like RCI and II. Plus, groups of 6 (as long as it doesn't leave any unsupervised children) can get two studios for roughly the same points per night as a 1 bedroom, maybe they just didn't see the need to offer a "sleeps 6" unit.

Given the current size and configuration of the 1BR, I don't see any way that they could make it sleep 6 and still consider it a luxury accommodation. We'd have to revisit the "two queen beds in the master bedroom layout" and I think most indicated that they wouldn't like that at all.

Colleen...this topic comes up often here, so brace yourself!! ;)

I have to say that a master bedroom is just that ,meaning one bed usually King or at least a Queen with its own bath facilities. All I have to say is buy more points so you can use a two bedroom if you need to or a GV. I have to say this to anyone that brings this subject up, if you can not afford to buy into DVC do not do it. I have noticed over this past year that purchasing into DVC is suppose to be some grand money saving adventure that will assure you can go to WDW more. If you are going to purchase into DVC please make sure you can afford it, it is not for everyone. Please do not try to drag DVC down with suggestions that a masterbedroom have more than one bed, or whatever. I had 3 kids and we always used the two bedroom situation as it should be, end of story. Far two many people are buying into DVC that really should not be for financial reasons.

There was a similar thread recently but I can't search for it right now. The bottom line is DVC could have made a sleep 6 one BR unit. Just realize that the total points for that type of unit would be far closer to a 2 BR cost than the present 1 BR. It would need 2 baths and extra space with a loft or murphy bed in one of the rooms or 2 pull out's. So it's not reasonable to expect a sleep 6 one BR for the price of a current 1 BR. Besides DVD wants to make money and sell points, their main goal is not to make it cheaper for the members.

In the timeshare world, sleep 6 one BR units do exist but there aren't many of them. Even then, the exchange companies usually classify them as sleep 4 for exchange purposes unless you can sleep 3 couples privately.

BTW there are rumors that the treehouse villas will become part of the SSR. If this is even a possibility, I think it would have to be listed in the initial public offering statement. They are currently configured to sleep 6, but there is no jacuzzi.

There is another option for sleeping six - two studios. That's how you'd do it with regular hotel rooms (at least, without sneaking extra people in). It isn't the huge jump in points. I know it isn't the best solution - especially if children are involved....but it is an option.

I hadn't seen the previous posts regarding the "6" families. Thanks for the info, folks. I do think the "2 studios" plan makes sense for a family of 6. I just wasn't sure that all DVC properties could put two studios together. With older kids the 2 rooms could be separated but not with little ones who need supervision.

We are a family of 4. We stay in a studio or one-bedroom when it's just us, and when with my parents we stay in a 2-bedroom. I assure you I have no stake in this question; I was merely curious. I understand the concept of a "master bedroom." Yet I still believe that offering SOME 1-bedrooms with sleeping capacity of 6 would make sense. When we bought DVC, our sales guide helped us decide on how many points we would need and specifically mentioned that many families of more than 4 use the 1-bedrooms units. I know this is a big debate issue, but obviously this is a question the sales people get a lot, which indicates to me that there are a lot of potential DVC families interested in "affordable" rooms for 5 or 6.

If the treehouse villas offer more options, great!

I have been looking into interval options and I noticed that most of the 2br units at other resorts (westin, royals, ect) only offer sleeping accomidations for 6.

Marriot was the only one I noticed that had a 2br configuration that slept 8.

I think disney really thought of the needs of familys when they designed DVC. I think its all about weighing your options and compromise.

A:more points and more space with 2br or
B:less points, less space for 2 studios

Both sleep 8. both give the group 2 bathrooms and 2 kitchenettes, the laundry is just a little bit out of the way, but still free. Its not a bad option if buying more points is not your priority.

No connecting studios and no way to guarantee they'll even be close to each other. That makes it unworkable for kids under teenagers and even then, it depends on the teen.

I'm not sure this rises to the level of rumor. The way I read it was more of the newpaper writer reading more into what was said than there really was. I can guarantee you that there will be no revamped treehouse villas as a direct part of DVC.

rentdvc, Never implied there were connecting studios.

Mom stays with two kids, Dad stays with the others - wouldn't even need to be at the same resort - much less close to each other.

I said it wasn't the best option - just another one that didn't use up a lot of points.

Now THERE is a vacation plan... I will put dh and the 2 kids in the first studio, and I will stay in the 2nd... perhaps at a different resort! THAT is a good use of points! :) Somehow I doubt dh will go for this!

Can I put my mother and GM at another resort, that seems like a plan for me.

You'd have to know them to understand. A couple of days is about all any of us can take. We'll be at HH this summer with 2 Marriott Grande Ocean units. If they go, my sister and brother (same parents) likely will not.
