Sleepless at Wilderness or Plan Shman 10/21 **PHOTOPASS Pics Flik!**

Houston to Chipley? Y'all did good on time, despite the traffic! :) And I agree, it is always better for the second day driving to be shorter! I made sure of that when I was trekking back and forth between TX and DC!

We did make decent time...I'm not a speed racer, and I drive safe, but I do push it.:rolleyes1

It was definitely a good plan. I have to say though. I understand how a friend of mine just does it in one day. They leave at 3 or 4 AM and get to WDW around dinner time. I'm not sure that I could ever really do that though, I usually have such a hard time getting to sleep...

WOW. I live in Houston AND Mr. and Mrs. Bueller, Sr. live in Baton Rouge - I have made the trek down I-10 many MANY times in my 35 years, and I REALLY enjoyed the trip through your eyes - we have never stopped in the Atchafalaya Basin Welcome center - I think we will have to the next time we go!

Cajun Charlie's in Sulpher is ALWAYS our lunch stop - they have a fabulous buffett with fried alligator - super yummy.

I loved your dining report, but I think I'm enoying this even more than that!

And it is lovely how you take such good care of your men.

Mrs. Spratt

PS - Do y'all live out 290? I'm trying to figure out where the commute could be two hours each way (I think I have an idea of where your husband works...:rolleyes1)

Awesome! I have finished your dining report and was thrilled to move on over here. I like the way you tell a story. Props too, for enjoying the journey as much as the destination!

I was awaken by the familiar feeling of a warm little body crawling into my bed and snuggling between DH and myself.

For as long as I can remember, since DS realized his mobility in the morning, he has hopped out of his own bed and come into our bed for Cuddle Time. I LOVE this time. At 8 years old, I don't know how much longer cuddle time will last, but I cherish every minute of it while it does.:lovestruc

Even as I sincerely wished that DS would snuggle in and go back to sleep.:rolleyes1

It was sometime between 6:00 and 6:30 AM. I was really wanting more sleep than I had had.

Many times, especially if DS has gone to bed late, he will actually sleep in. He's a bit like a teenager that way. I know some kids that wake up at the crack of dawn no matter WHEN they went to bed. I'm grateful that DS sleeps as needed.

But DS hadn't been driving the night before. Nor was he trying to keep the driver awake. He had been sleeping. Had fallen asleep at a decent time in fact. So he was raring to go.

DS is quite the chatter box. There's no doubt where it came from. It was destined to be. He got a double dose of the talkative gene!

I can't quite recall the topic of the morning. I was ignoring it with all my might. As if I could WILL the men back to sleep. The giggles were increasing. The excitement was building. We were gonna be at Disney today!!!:yay:

I came wide awake when DH said, "There's a whole lot of bad breath goin' on."

Who could sleep past that?:scared:

Time to get up. Actually brush our teeth. Get dressed. Load the car back up. And hit the road.

In the light of day, we could see that we were surrounded by trees in Chipley. Very nice. There was another family with Texas plates loading their car. I almost asked if they were headed to Disney, too, but with kids in the family, I didn't want to cause any undo upset in case they weren't.

The Super 8 is supposed to have a complimentary continental breakfast. We had recently stayed at one and were totally unimpressed with the offerings. We didn't plan on eating from the hotel.

I had packed some breakfast foods in a separate cooler. We would eat from that this morning.

Yeah. Right.

I thought we could avoid the fast food lure.

There was a Burger King connected to the Exxon station. We filled the tank. And avoided the food. We hit the road.

It was a nice attempt at eating food from home.

"Do these strawberries taste FIZZY to you?" I asked DH.

"Yeah. Probably not good."

DS announced that he needed a bathroom.

Didn't we JUST hit the road?

Oh look. Another Burger King! I tell you what. I've never seen so many Burger Kings as driving along I-10.

This is ANOTHER Burger King attached to a gas station. There is little else at this exit. The restrooms are located in a separate building at the back of the parking lot/fuel pumps. Not too bad.

We used the facilities and rounded the building to get into the drive thru line.

Here's how I know that the croissant breakfast sandwich at Roaring Fork is bigger than the one's at Burger King.

Happy tummies.

We were cruising right along.

DH and DS were playing soccer on the Nintendos. FIFA 2006. We are HUGE soccer fans. Futbol in much of the world. DS has played on six different teams now. Fall and spring seasons. DH has coached him three times. The Dynamo is our hometown team. The best team in the West this year. We've attended two games already this season. We LOVE soccer in our house.

DS is a bit more talented than DH at the Nintendo version. There was quite a bit of good natured bantering going on.

And before we knew it, we were taking the exit in Tallahassee for our morning Starbucks. Exit 203. Thomasville Rd. Aka 61.

Many of the Starbucks locations were indicated on the highway FOOD signs. A few weren't. If memory serves, this was one that wasn't. This is a great location though.

If we stop, we go in and use the facilities. Might as well try to go if you are stopped already. Therefore, I don't recall if this location had a drive thru.

If you stop here, don't try to go back the way you came. It's best to drive in a U-shape. You'll avoid a mess of traffic if you exit toward the east from Starbucks and then head south again toward the freeway. Use 319 to get back to I-10.

DH is one of those that can't read in a moving car. Makes him ill. He needed a break from the Nintendo.

TIme for some audio entertainment. We had been listening to some tunes. Time to listen to a book.

DS and I really like the Series of Unfortunate Events books. DH, however, doesn't. Yes, they are well written. Entertaining. Humorous. But he doesn't like that so many UNFORTUNATE things happen. Very negative. He doesn't care to listen to it, but he doesn't stop us.

But for the enjoyment of all, we started listening to Nim's Island. We all saw the movie. It was a good movie. We liked it. DS and I thought that it would be fun to listen to it when we saw it at the library. We were right.

It was a beautiful sun shiny day. Time for another rest stop.

I was so glad that DS announced the need, because this was a stop that I really wanted to make. The last rest area on I-10 before turning southbound on I-75. Exit 294.

Can you tell I have a THING for rest stops? My Great Grandma lived in Lake Elsinore, California, which was a small little southern California town a ways from San Bernadino. I remember one road trip I took with her from her home to mine in the Bay Area. We drove up I-5 and stopped at EVERY single rest stop along the way. My Grandma, she didn't believe in pushing it. I was just young enough to think that rest stops were the coolest thing EVER. Little parks all along the highway!!

This rest stop indeed, was like a little park. Lots of grass. Lots of trees. And the sweet little picnic table covers that remind me of the Jetsons.

370.jpg

371.jpg

I couldn't resist taking this picture. Mmm. Mmm. Today, DH was sportin' HIS Apollo shirt.

372.jpg

DH's father served in the Army. I have multiple Grandpas that served in the armed forces. That, and in general, we are great supporters of the men and women that fight to preserve or initiate the cause of freedom. I liked seeing this plaque at this rest area. This is DS's impressed face.

373.jpg

374.jpg

We paused. But we didn't linger. Time to get a move on.

The next exit was, finally, a change in the roadway! I-75!

If you have driven this highway, then you MUST have noticed the billboards. If you don't know about them, I'm not going to enlighten you. I just have to make mention that I was absolutely SHOCKED at how MANY of the billboards were dealing with the topic in Florida. It must be a serious issue in the state to receive such frequent and bold advertising.

We stopped to gas up before we got onto the Florida Turnpike. We totally overpaid for fuel, but I wanted to arrive with my tank more full than empty.

Traffic was pretty good.

We were flowing right along.

Nim was overcoming some serious dangers.

In preparation for our tour on the toll road (and for pressed pennies), I had raided every coin stash in the house. The toll booth was a bit of a wait. I didn't pick a good lane. We watched as, to all appearances, every other lane moved forward, EXCEPT the one we were sitting in.

I don't understand why they don't have an exact change only lane. Texans know. We got this toll road business down. There should be a lane where you just throw your change in the bucket. Like an FP for the toll booth. For those of us that don't have the sweet FLORIDA toll sticker. DH and I were wondering WHAT would happen if we went through the Sunpass lane with our EZ-TAG. The states should have some sort of agreement.

We handed the attendant $2.50 in quarters.

Traffic on the tollroad rocked!

The next thing we knew, it was time to exit.

Really, here?

It's what it says.

Ok.

There was NO SIGN of Disney. And yet. We were exiting.

$0.50 to exit.

Exit 267A.

We were following the directions given by Google Maps.

We TOTALLY went to Disney the back way!

We were driving through the residental areas. Then there was a turn. Cast member parking? Where in the world?

Where was the big arch that everyone drives through?

They don't have it on the north side of the property.

We came in past the cast member parking for the Magic Kingdom. Past the Contemporary Resort. And then, a left hand turn into the entrance of Disney's Wilderness Lodge.

All these trip reports that I have seen and read. All these pictures that I have seen. I STILL don't know where that Welcome arch is!:confused3

There is an arch to drive under at the Wilderness Lodge. I always intended to get a picture of it, but I was always DRIVING! The feet of the arch look like they are constructed from lincoln logs.

The tall trees. The greenery around. You really do feel like you are driving into the entrance of a state park. And just like a state park, there is a security gate.

We pulled up. We were checking in today.

The guard verified our name on the list. He gave us a parking pass that had already been prepared. He gave us direction for check-in and self park. And with a wave of his hand, he said, "Welcome home."

Awesome! I have finished your dining report and was thrilled to move on over here. I like the way you tell a story. Props too, for enjoying the journey as much as the destination!

Thank you so much. WELCOME!!

We try. It's all a part of vacation leave from work so I say, you gotta aim to enjoy as much of that as possible!;)

Oh you really should stop there! It won't take long, unless you want it to. Fun stuff to look at. The have so many maps and things that should how the area came into it's current state. I still haven't really gone through all the literature we picked up. I wouldn't mind checking it out on a weekend getaway actually.

Fried alligator is yummy? You know, I came to Houston for a trade show, long before I lived here. We went with the local sales rep to some Cajun place. My most clear memory is that the guy who was the host, I think he owned it, he could work his throat so that he could sound JUST like a train horn. EXACTLY. It was amazing. We were a huge group and he just FED us. We had frog legs and alligator. The only thing I remember about it is that I think I thought it was a bit chewy. Might have to try Charlies's and expand our culinary horizons.

And thanks. I try.:goodvibes

LOL on the dramatic build up for the big majestic arch that wasnt!!!!!!!! :rotfl2: I love that the computer was think mileage and not presentation!!! FUH-knee. Well I hope you did see it after all!

Great final post before you got to the World!!! We have done those late night hotel stops too.... it is fun.

STAR BUCKS is sadly NOT at WDW... I am seriously thinking about bringing my espresso maker to the villa in December.. ;)

Oh, I'm joining in if that's okay. I loved your dining review!! We are going deluxe this time and I was glad to see that you & your family enjoyed it.

You are cracking me up with your love of bridges and rest areas. I LOVE that you think to appreciate the land and the area where you are driving. :thumbsup2: I think too often we get in a hurry to just get there and forget that we are are somewhere! I love to people-watch at rest areas and wonder where everybody's going.

Thanks for sharing your trip! I can't wait to read more. :surfweb:

I KNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!:lmao: Oh yes, I DID finally see that arch. From the backside, while we were LEAVING!:rotfl: I tell you what. After dealing with the coffee in WDW, I would! We did an RCI exchange for Pagosa Springs in December. We're gonna have a white Christmas!!:woohoo::yay::woohoo: And my espresso maker is DEFINITELY on the packing list.:thumbsup2

Welcome aboard!

Of course it's okay! I don't know what it is about my review threads, but they don't seem to inspire a lot of chatter.:confused3

I'm not sure HOW it happened but it's true. I just LOVE to look at the land.:confused3 I have a goal to see all our lovely states in the US. So does DS. He's up to 13 now! And I like people watching too. The only thing that makes me sad about stopping along the way is when I've got a good road buddy. You know those random cars that you kind of pair up with along the drive? I ALWAYS wonder about the people. What are all these people doing? Where are they going?

Awwwww.......I think my eyes actually welled up a bit when the CM said "Welcome Home." Yep. I'm a freak. What can I say?

I like rest stops too! Especially in the form of roadside stands with fresh fruits and veggies, and homemade jam! :)

Love your TR so far! I have this strong desire to go on a road trip, now. I completely understand your early dreams of being a trucker -- road trips are so fun, and so is singing/dancing in the car. Although, the singing/dancing combo might not be a good idea in a big rig. :rolleyes1

Can't wait to hear more...and see pics from WL!!!

I read on here that they say that, and even knowing that, I still was thrilled to hear it in person!

My Mom and I always used to stop at the roadside stands. There were plenty in California! I don't recall a single one on our trip though. I have to remember to get a bit of cash to shop there though. I rarely have cash.

Our next road trip is this December. We are headed to Pagosa Springs. It's about the same distance for us as the WDW road trip, but it should take longer because of the mountain roads. DS LOVES driving. He likes it much better than flying. I think his ears are sensitive to the pressure changes. He is so NOT looking forward to the two trips we have to take for my SILs weddings.

I'm trying to maintain a steady pace of at least one post a day. The house projects are getting pretty hot and heavy. I'm FINALLY in the master bathroom. I got the wall paper off, oh, a YEAR ago and I'm just now getting to dealing with walls, etc. I think the vanity top is coming out the weekend too. We are going to tile in a new one. Busy busy, trying to get the house ready for someone else to live in it!

We arrived to a flurry of activity under the Wilderness Lodge porte-cochere. There were so many cars and people about that it didn't seem safe to try to drive into it. We stopped the car just short of the shaded area. Without a welcome, we flew under the radar of all the bell hops and greeters (if there were any) and entered the lobby unescorted.

As is similar at many resorts, there is a two tiered entrance. A pair of sliding doors, remarkable only because you can't SEE through them, lead to a very small room where another pair of solid sliding doors open to suddenly reveal an impressive volume of space.

375.jpg

The focal point of the WL lobby is the air. The space. The sheer height and width. The suddenness with which it opens into such a grand scale environment where things are larger than life to be proportional. There wasn't really any ONE thing to focus on. There was too much detail.

We were feeling the need to get settled. Get our car parked properly. Get our room. Get our stuff into our room. We didn't take this time to explore. We headed straight for the online check-in counter.

I had no qualms using the online check in. I know many have expressed concern over whether or not to use the service because they have made location or other requests associated with their rooms. I didn't make any requests. I didn't see the point in making a request for what I thought my family might enjoy at a place that I had never been to before. Let the winds of fate decide where we should call home for the next week. I trust.

We were booked for a woods view room. I admit that I was hoping that we would have one that might look toward the Magic Kingdom. I know that some of those rooms can see the higher fireworks during Wishes.

There were two CM's working the online check-in area, which is located to the far right of the front desk.

We were greeted with a smile.

Accessing our room reservation, the CM wished us a Happy Anniversary. How many years?

12 years.

How wonderful.

Yes, isn't it?

She gave us two anniversary buttons.

DH expressed something about the room. I warned him that official check-in time wasn't for two hours. Our room might not be ready.

The CM jumped in with the fact that our room was ready.

Yay!

There's something about that. I don't know. It makes me think that the room was unoccupied the night before. I like the feeling that the room has had a chance to rest for a bit.

Room 5167.

We were told that it was a nice, quiet location. We will be able to watch the water parade from our room. We should enjoy it she said. It's an upgrade.

An upgrade?

Double YAY!!

We were handed a folder full of literature and our KTTW. She directed us to the elevator.

We went back out to the car. There was still quite a bit of activity going on.

You got any cash?

Nope. You?

Nothing but quarters.

Ok then.

We were still flying under the radar. No one had approached us to even try to help us.

I asked the desk if we could use one of the carts.

Uh. No.

Okay, fine.

We didn't have too many suitcases, just a whole bunch of THINGS. Coolers. Computer bag. Activity bag. A big box full of beer. Two bags of wine. We put on our pack mule hats, loaded up, and went in search of our room.

It was great fun to walk into the lobby and finally see so many of the things that I had seen pictures of. The fireplace. The bridge over the head waters. But we were heavy laden. There was no time to stop and take pictures. This wasn't the time. So like me, you'll have to wait to see it all.

There was an elevator waiting for us.

We exited on the fifth floor.

We headed toward to the south wing. Hmmm.

We walked down the hall.

We took a jog to the right.

We walked down the hall.

We passed more elevators.

We took ANOTHER jog to the right.

We walked down the hall.

WOW!!

We walked to the very end of the hallway.

There were four doors whose rooms were obviously facing directly out toward the lake. I had seen the map of the layout of WL to know that there were rooms that faced the lake at the end.

I was SOO EXCITED as we opened the door!

YES!! What a gorgeous view! I had to take the picture twice so that the view could be seen...

376.jpg

And so my men could be seen!

377.jpg

It was quite a trek down to this room. I thought that some might not care for this location. This made it all the sweeter. I don't like noisy hotels. I believed the CM that this would be a quiet location, up here on the fifth floor, and the very, very END of the hallway.

And it was a water view! A beautiful lake view. Looking to the left we could see the boat launch, the geyser, and the Contemporary.

378.jpg

Looking to the right, we could see the beach area.

379.jpg

What a joke! The California girl in me scoffed at the hard pack area with some lawn chairs and the curb at the lakeside. But I wasn't here for the beach. It didn't detract from the wonderful lake.

The lake was such a nice size! There was an island of some sort in the middle. And there was a BEYOND. Beautiful trees along the shoreline. Oh. It was lovely.

380.jpg

What wasn't lovely was the thought of having to go back to the car and get all the rest of our stuff. It was enough to make me want to cry.

DS just wanted to flop on the bed. Could he just stay here?

381.jpg

Um. NO. We are a family and we do things as a family. You will come and help us get all this stuff.

The porte-cochere was EMPTY now. No more flying under the radar. As we were headed back into the lobby, the head bell hop asked us for the keys to our car.

What? I admit, I had a bit of an attitude. Why?

A very calm explanation of emergency vehicle access, etc etc.

But we left the car here just fine a second ago. I know that I was frustrated with dealing with the luggage.

DH handed over the keys without comment.

I was still a bit aggitated as we made the trek down to the room. I don't like handing over my keys. I smacked myself upside the head and realized the man has a job to do. Give him a break.

We managed to get all our things into the room with that trip.

One more haul back to the car to park it legally.

The bell hop had moved our car to the exit side of the porte-cochere into the shade. As he returned our keys, he described where to park. Just drive straight and park in any available spot.

Easier said than done. There were a LOT of cars parked here. We had fun looking at all the license plates. Where did everyone drive in from? Ohio! Pennsylvania! Lots of Florida. Maryland! Texas! South Carolina. ALASKA?!?!

Now it was time to relax. Now it was time to take some pictures of our temporary home. Standing a the lot level, I hailed my men. WAIT!! I want a picture! DS didn't want me to get their feet in the picture. He wanted to look like he was as tall as his Daddy.

382.jpg

If you read my PTR, then you know that DS recently got his own camera. He really enjoys taking pictures.

Now I want to take one of you! Blah blah blah...

What was that?

383.jpg

If you look at our shirts, you can see we are now sporting our sweet anniversary buttons. I want to take a romantic picture. For your anniversary.

Oh. Giggle. OK. Our DS. He puckers his lips and mades this num num num sound, like Mrs. Incredible feeding Jack Jack. This is his visual for kissing. It cracks us up. You can see our laughter.

384.jpg

Another view from the top of the stairs.

385.jpg

Very cool topiary.

387.jpg

We walked into the WL for the last time this evening. We had a bit of time to explore the resort and get settled before dinner.

386.jpg

What a great view from your room. Can't wait to hear more. We drive on every trip, about 28 so far. Alot of miles on the road:cool1:. We have always had a minivan. They are great for traveling. So much room and yet we are always filled to capacity. We usually leave at 4 or 5 in the morning and drive until about 8 at nite and stop about 3 hours from Disney. We also like to only have a short drive on our arrival day. We have stayed at WL and have loved it. We will be back at the VWL in December in a 2 bedroom. Can't wait.

WAY to go for the upgrade!!!! AWESOME!!!! That really must have been nice!! What a peaceful view! almost like you are alone on vacation! Great luck!

It is nice to finally get there -- that luggage trek though, whew! I would be with DS on that one!

Love the topiary, too! They make a visit to my TR as well.. tonight!!

Great update! Hope you are having a nice weekend!

:goodvibes

Hi there! Just finished reading through, I have to say that you made reading about the drive down very enjoyable. :thumbsup2

Ah, just love the Wilderness Lodge, fantastic place to stay, I miss it. Great upgrade as well! :thumbsup2

WOW!!! 28 trips! How cool is that?

We rented a minivan once for a cross country trip. KC area to Ft. Worth for a job interview/look at houses type trip. It was SO nice to have all that room. I looked into renting a minivan for this trip. Besides airfare being too expensive, there was also the possibility that we wouldn't be going to WDW at this time. So driving kept our options to cancel more open. But the minivans were too expensive; the weekly rental PLUS the extra days we would need for driving/packing. :sad2:

Ooo. It would be lovely to see WL with all the Christmas decor! :thumbsup2 How lovely.

It was a great room. We discovered that it is really easy to get around WL. The layout makes nothing too very far away. And with air conditioned hallways... who cares, right?

Having dollar bills was ONE thing that I forgot!:headache: It not that I'm cheap...I just didn't HAVE any...and the thought of all the fees that it would have taken to get some cash, IF they had an ATM in the lobby even. It just seemed as much of a hassle as it would be to just get the job done ourselves. But let's just say that it wasn't the HIGLIGHT of our vacation.:rotfl2:

We are having a nice weekend. I'm gonna try to finish up my picture stuff. How are you doing on that? Some of your pics are really cute, btw.:cutie:

I'm so glad you enjoyed reading about the drive! Getting info on I-10 before hand was very difficult. It seems that most just power on through, but since we were having to leave so late on our travel day, there wasn't any point in that for us.

We were very excited about the upgrade.

Hi! Former Houstonian here! Read your dining report and now loving the trip report. LOVED your dining costs breakdown, BTW. We are considering the Wilderness Lodge for our November trip. I wondered what your thoughts were/if you did much research/cost-benefit analysis on the difference between courtyard view vs. woods view vs. standard view???

Thanks

Yay! You are there!

Thanks

First off. Welcome!

I didn't do much research. My deal ended up being restricted by rooms that were available for the 4/3 deal. At first, I had booked a courtyard view with bunk beds. I thought my DS would really have fun with them. I also mistakenly thought that they were right up against the wall. When I realized that they weren't, and when I talked to DS about it, he really wanted to sleep on a bed like he sleeps on at home. A queen. So I looked often to see if any rooms opened up that would work with the 4/3 deal. Woods view opened and I got it. I never questioned that or tried to get a courtyard view.

The view you book has nothing to do with the actual location of where the rooms are. They aren't all grouped together so that booking one would insure that you are in a certain location within the resort. So other than the actual view itself, there isn't much benefit to booking one over the other.

If you look at the first post of the Wilderness Lodge thread, there is a link that shows where the different view rooms are located. On that view, you can see how we were upgraded to a courtyard view at the end of the south wing, but the end of the north wing is considered a woods view. It would be too, because the trees are super thick and you really wouldn't be able to see the lake from the end rooms on the north wing.

Then, if you go to Google maps (I'm SUCH a big fan of Google maps!) and check out the satelite view of the Wilderness Lodge you can get a clue as to what each area will be looking at.

If you have some specific questions, I'm happy to have this discussion with you. I have a tendency to notice things and remember them fairly well. I'd be happy to help you with information.:goodvibes

Enjoying your report very much! I too appreciate that you included the road trip in your report. We also did a Texas-to-Florida road trip for our first trip to WDW. I was expecting grumpiness and tension because we were driving with a DD16, DS14 and DD9--all sharing a back seat--I was most surprised by how much we enjoyed it! We also stopped at the Mississippi Welcome Center rest stop and took pictures standing in the astronaut's footprints!
