I am so happy to hear that this herd of turtles made it out of texas...

Cant wait for the next installment! Hope the heat isn't soo bad there this weekend??!!

I'll be watching!

:surfweb:

Oh, and I love that you had identified each starbucks location along the way... this would be me too..... ;)

WEe-eell. We had made it out of HOUSTON. Oof. The heat is HOT this weekend. It's hardly taking any time at all for all my laundry to dry! I just can't bear to run the dryer so I've been hanging everything outside.

Since I don't drink soda, it's VERY important for me to know where my caffeine supply is to be found!

Again, I must say A*W*E*S*O*M*E!! Can't wait to read more!!

Thank you so much! I'm glad you came over!

OK, I haven't even started reading yet, but SO EXCITED to see this up!!! Cannot wait!!!!!! :yay::woohoo::banana::cool1::dance3:

I'm so glad that you came over! I hope I don't disappoint.:upsidedow

You're off to a great start--can't wait to read more!

Thank you so much! Welcome!

YAY! I'm in! Great start.

YAY! I'm glad!:yay:

I have been following your TR so far and it is very descriptive. I have followed your odessy using Bing Maps to see your progress. Keep up the good work.

Shoot. Who needs Disney World when you got bridges, crocodile skins, and talking birds!! ;) Wendy's gotta love those frosty's... :) Having fun reading the road trip beginning!

I ended up using Google Maps to plot our course. I don't know if Bing has the same feature, but google maps has a street view option. It's very cool when it's available. You can stand in front of the address and look all around. It really helps to see the neighborhood around, say, the motel you are thinking about staying at.

I'm glad you think it's good work. One thing I couldn't find much info on when planning out trip was the road trip part. I'm hoping to set a trend! It's fun to see where would be a good place to stop along the way...

It's not just about the destination...It's all about the journey too!:goodvibes

popcorn::Your dining review was fantastic. I can't wait to read your trip review. Chai Latte in hand, I am settling in for a good read...

But it's a well known fact in our home that while DH may struggle to wake up at 5:00 AM on a work morning, on a morning where FISHING is involved... QUOTE]

OMG I totally read this part thinking "my husband has a twin" because this is SO true. He doesn't even need an alarm when he's getting up for fishing. Yet when he has to get up for work, it's a battle.
So funny.:rotfl:

Great trip report so far. We are from Pa. so your road trip from Texas is very interesting. We always drive and really enjoy it. The road trip is part of the fun. We have great laughs on the road:rotfl2: Can't wait for more.

Outside the main building, there is a nice place to have a picnic lunch, if you had one with you.

:thumbsup2 We were at WDW the same time as you (June 21 - 26). We stopped at the same rest area on our way to WDW too. I packed the family a picnic lunch that morning and we ate lunch at this exact table. We definitely plan to make this a regular stop on our WDW roadtrips. The bathrooms were clean and the women at the information desk were very nice. They even gave our children some coloring books and fishing books for the road.

I can't wait to read the rest of your Trip Report and compare your experience to ours.

:goodvibes Jennifer

I agree that the road trip is an intragal part of the WDW vacation. I hope your trend is picked up by others. I enjoy the road trip to the World and back; in fact our route takes us through St. Louis, Nashville, Chatanooga, Atlanta, and SR 429. It takes us 18 hours driving straight through and I love the scenery around Monteagle and on into Chatanooga.
Keep us informed!

:lmao:Exactly. Waking up BEFORE the alarm even goes off! You totally made me laugh. DH, too. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. That's one of the reasons I LOVE road trips. Nothing like being in a car with your family for so many hours. Now that we have seen how much DS actually likes it, too, we've opened up doors for us to go on more vacations. If only DH has the vacation time!

Welcome! I popped over to your TR, and it appears that we were multiple parks on the same day. It will be funny to see if we crossed paths in WDW. Too funny about both stopping at the Atchafalaya rest stop. I think we were one day ahead of you.

18 hours! That's a LONG day.

MO is a great state. My dad grew up in Jeff City. We used to go back there for Christmas when my Grandmother was living. I haven't driven across TN though or most of your route. Ever done a TR?

Hey Rabbit! Sorry I am so late to the party! I hadn't realized that you started...cause I am remarkable unobservant these days! Anyway, I am here now, and yay, looks like everything is off to a great start!

For this trip our cross country vehicle is my Pontiac Vibe.

I LOVE my little car.

It's a funny story how I got it. And as much as I would love to share it, I will refrain and try to stay on topic.

There are two features that I especially enjoy.

The first is a 115V/100W AC outlet. It's so great to not have to get a car adapter for every electronic device! For this road trip, I bought a short extension cord to run down the center console and to the floor board of the back seat. As needed, DS could plug his DS into it.

The second is the functionality of the shot gun seat. It will lay perfectly flat. The back of it has a plastic tray type thing so you can use it as a sort of table. Another long story, but once we used that seat to hold our $5 take and back pizza dinner while DH and DS sat in the back.

Combining the ideas here, we thought that we had come up with a perfect set up for watching DVDs on this road trip.

I recently received a new lap top as a gift from my parents. It has a beautiful screen. It's a wide screen too, so perfect for watching movies. Much better than a cheap DVD player. So the idea was that we could set the laptop up on the "table" and just plug it in. We also brought an extra set of computer speakers along so that we could hear the thing loud and clear. These speakers are really nice. They require power too, but the extension cord had room for 3 things so, no problem.

The only deal with the set up is that it requires a bit of manuvering of all the goods in the car. Because my little car is a bit short on space. All the items next to DS in the back seat, multiple coolers and some car entertainment, needed to be moved to the front. Then DH needed to move to the back.

As we were walking out the car from our lovely break in the middle of the river swamp, DS announced that he'd like to look at some things on the computer.

He didn't quite GET that the internet wouldn't be working on it.

Movie watching was a good second pick. What did we bring?

We'll see. Let's get everything moved around.

The PLAN was a good one.

It's unfortunate that we didn't think about how the laptop power cord would have three prongs. But the car outlet only allows for two prongs, and therefore the extension cord only allowed for two as well.

We would just have to see how long the computer battery would last.:sad2:

The speakers worked and that was good.

It'd been a while since we had some new movies in the house. I had purchased one splurge movie on sale and several others of the bargain basement variety in the months preceding our trip. I had thought to wrap them up and reveal them at intervals along the way.

I DID wrap them up in Target bags and hide them in the car.:upsidedow

I unveiled the splurge first. I passed back the "trash bag" to DS. He didn't seem to be thrilled with my choice, but he was happy to have something new to watch.

Disney's Bolt. A story about a road trip for a road trip. I liked the idea. DH thought it would be funny to report how DS, whom I called Bolt in my PTR, was watching Bolt.

We had some pillows in the car. DH and DS were lounging and stretched out as best they could be and watching a movie. Time for snacks.

We dug out the goodies that we had stocked up on. Are you familiar with Mountain Man? They come to DH's work every once in a long while. They had come just this week. We got mixed nuts, candied nuts, gummy bears, malt balls, black licorice, and pastels. Munch munch munch.

It was good to munch.popcorn::

We were in traffic yet AGAIN.

I seriously thought that we would be approaching Tammany Trace Headquarters by now. If not well before. I had envisioned a lovely, long dinner break at the park. A bit of walking on the trail. DS playing on the playground. Here's where I thought to go: http://www.tammanytrace.org. I thought that we might hit the Mandeville trailhead one way and the Abita Springs trailhead the other way.

But NOOO. We were in rush hour traffic in Baton Rouge.

It was at this very moment that I determined something about this trip. My epiphany moment, if you will. You can plan all you want to, but in the end, what will happen will happen.

As I worked on my clutch leg AGAIN, listening to Bolt, laughing with DH and DS, I realized that we were having a good time. Traffic, or no. You can't ruin a good time because it's not a part of the plan.

I've seen people do this though. I saw it more times than I care to count on this trip. A hurry-up-and-stop-doing-what-you-are-doing-so-we-can-go-get-to-where-we-are-supposed-to-be-so-we-can-have-fun type attitude.

I couldn't really hurry up through traffic, but you know what I mean.

And just as I was thinking such happy thoughts to myself, another bridge was on the horizon! Again, I didn't take these bridge pictures, I found them in cyperspace. Online. (PBS anyone?)

2003-11-28_15-42-20.jpg

This is the Horace Wilkinson Bridge, which spans the Mississippi river to carry I-10 in Baton Rouge. I read though, that people don't really call it that name in Baton Rouge. They call it the Mississippi Bridge, or the New Bridge, because it is the newer of the two that cross the Mississippi in Baton Rouge.

Crossing more water. The easy way. I guess I have something of an appreciation for the engineering and construction of bridges. It makes me think of life before the bridges. Crossing the Mississippi to go west.

But we were going east! Directly east. Baton Rouge is where I-10 will curve south to go through New Orleans. They built highway 12 as a bypass, so that the eastbound traveler could stay on a more direct line between points.

All this traffic. The little Vibe was thirsty. We needed to stop and fill the tank.

I knew there was a Starbucks in Denham Springs, just on the other side of Baton Rouge. We would stop there and get some gas.

The South Range Avenue exit in Denham Springs is a keeper. Lots to see and do here. Immediately at the exit is a Bass Pro Shop. There's a lot of businesses around supporting the people coming in to visit there. Hotels. Gas stations. Fast food. Less fast food.

We filled the tank.

It was a dinner-ish hour, but we were full from all the snacking. Too full for Starbucks even. It was too hot anyway.

But there, in the distance. Distance being a stop light or so down the road. Was the store. The store that has saved many a weekend project.

hd_la.jpg

The laptop battery was hanging strong, but who knows for how long? Time to supply some power.

DH and DS hung out in the car while I literally RAN into the store. I know my way around Home Depot. It was short work to get to the right aisle. A helpful gentleman took me right to the needed product.

A three prong to two prong converter! A stop at the self check. Charge $0.76 because NO I didn't have any cash.

The laptop screen got considerably brighter with power. The backseat was thrilled.

I was singing Willie as I got back onto Highway 12. "On the road again..."

Hey Rabbit! Sorry I am so late to the party! I hadn't realized that you started...cause I am remarkable unobservant these days! Anyway, I am here now, and yay, looks like everything is off to a great start!

Hey Courtney! Um. You're not that late...we haven't even made it out of Louisiana yet! I'm glad you came over!

Glad you had your epiphany and were having fun! We've had moments like that!
"Hurry up! The fun is supposed to start at 7 o'clock!"
"And clearly, not a minute sooner!"

(Gotta love FRIENDS!)

"Got any more trash Momma?" DS asked after the movie, Bolt, was finished.

This became the new code for "Are there any other new movies?" given that I had wrapped them up in the Target bags.

Next up was the Muppets Take Manhattan. DS really likes the Muppet movies and he hadn't seen this one yet, so he was really excited.

Time was flying by. So were the miles.

It was just after 8:00 PM and we were crossing the state line into Mississippi.

We hadn't stopped since Home Depot. We all needed a break from the car. Time to stretch our legs. Time to relieve our bladders.

The Mississippi Welcome Center was a perfect stop.

369.jpg

Located at Exit 2, the MS Welcome Center is not a typical rest area. You don't access it directly from the interstate; you have to drive about a city block length south on 607.

360.jpg

DS doing Vanna:

361.jpg

Stennis Space Center is very close by. This rest area, in addition to being a welcome center for the state of Mississippi, serves a the launch pad for free tours of the Space Center. We will definitely have to plan on doing this tour on a future pass through. It would be interesting to compare Stennis with Johnson. DH spends a bit of time at JSC.

362.jpg

363.jpg

We were there after operating hours, so even if we would have taken the time to do the tour, it wasn't an option for us. I don't know about the interior of the Welcome Center either, because that was closed as well. There still was one item of interest to check out here:

365.jpg

A lunar lander. I borrowed this picture of the information sign near it.

P7300009-640.jpg

Under the lunar lander are the footprints of Fred Haise from Apollo 13. I thought it was hilarious that I had my Apollo 40 year anniversary shirt on!

366.jpg

367.jpg

The rest area is very park like, with mature trees and covered picnic tables. It is a large area. This would also make an excellent picnic location.

364.jpg

368.jpg

We, however, we NOT in the mood to dally. We needed to get a move on. I dislike driving after dark. It's hard on the eyes. I wanted to get truckin' and cover as many miles as possible before sun down.

The sun set sometime before Mobile, Alabama. I don't remember where, but I do remember that we went through a decently long tunnel in Mobile in the dark.

The men were now watching Scooby Doo. Having something with shorter episodes was a welcome change from the long movies. I was enjoying listening to Scooby and Shaggy.

I was getting tired. We were definitely going to stop at the Starbucks in Spanish Fort, AL not too far on the other side of Mobile.

There is tremendous shopping at this, the State Hwy 181 exit. I think there was an indoor mall there. Starbucks was a strip mall location. As it was dark, I was happy to see that the area was perfectly safe. It struck me that Starbucks is a good indicator of safety in an area. I think that I will seek out Starbucks locations on every future road trip, just so that I would know where to find a safe exit, which is beyond helpful when traveling through unfamiliar territory.

We went into Starbucks for our order. Used the facilities. Stretched a bit. Worked out the kinks. Normally, I'm a grande girl, but tonight I got a triple vente!:thumbsup2

I was still driving. I didn't want DH to have to drive on vacation. He drives so much in his everyday to support our family. I generally enjoy driving. It's not a hardship. But the cummulative affect of the somewhat sleepless night and all the traffic we had encountered was starting to wear on me.

I'd read that many that drive from Texas overnight in Mobile as a good halfway point. Starting in Houston, Pensacola was just a bit more of a halfway point. I had checked out hotels in Pensacola. The cheap motels were somewhat scary looking. And what should be a moderate hotel was WAY overpriced. Pensacola wasn't working for us.

Besides, I was hopeful of making our arrival day a shorter's day drive. We were losing an hour in Florida when we entered the eastern time zone, so I really wanted to get further than midway to Wilderness Lodge. But where to stay in the Florida panhandle?

I searched acceptable hotel chains to see if there were any random locations. It was on the Holiday Inn Express site that I found Chipley, Florida. Located midway between Pensacola and Tallahassee, Chipley's claim to fame is Falling Waters State Park. It looks like a beautiful place to visit. I had envisioned the possibility of checking it out in the morning.

But as it was already 10:00 PM when we were entering Florida, I doubted that we would see the great waterfall in the park in the morning. I was seriously wishing that we were stopping in Pensacola. But a part of me was glad that a bed was waiting for me in Chipley. I knew that in the morning, I would be much happier waking up on the otherside of the highway mileage.

Because the Holiday Inn Express was not exactly cheap, I looked at all the hotel options in Chipley. The Super 8 was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper. This was when I discovered the benefit of the street view on Google maps. I could clearly see that the Super 8 was right next door to one of the other hotels, which was right next door to another, which was right across the street from another. It was hotel row. The Super 8 was just as safe as any of them.

The hotels are all set back from the main road into Chipley by a type of frontage road. Super 8 is closest to the highway, but the furthest driving distance because you can only turn onto the frontage road at the stop light.

It was just before midnight when we pulled in to where we could finally sleep for the night.

08629_b1.jpg

There was the NICEST elderly lady there to check me in. Seeing her at the desk confirmed that the safe feeling was well founded.

You can see the buildings where the rooms are located beyond the check in building. Single stories. Totally set back from the road. It was the only hotel set up this way. All the others were multi-story buildings with indoor corridors. You can see one in the upper right corner of the picture.

I was SOOOO glad we were parked RIGHT in front of our room. DH was too as he carried a sleeping DS into bed.:goodvibes

There were scarsely ANY vehicles here. It felt like we had the place to ourselves.

DH and I made quick work of taking valuables (laptop, Nintendos, cameras), the coolers, and our one overnight bag into the room. I emptied the coolers into the fridge. The Super 8's have those convenient Micro-Fridges where a microwave is permanently attached to a larger dorm-sized fridge.

Then DH and I gratefully fell into bed. And this night, we BOTH were almost instantly asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillows.

We live 60 miles south of JC at the Lake of the Ozarks. The two times that we have driven straight thru, my 20-something kids helped drive. We usually drive thru the night, but it is very boring. If I do a solo trip in September I will leave in the AM and stop in northern FL.
My most recent TRs are at the bottom of this post.

Keep the trip coming.

Love the Lake of the Ozarks. We went there once on vacation. Very nice.

Oof. Driving through the night would be rough. It bothers my eyes.

I so hear you on this. It really can consume any vacation any where, but I think vacations at Disney are especially prone to this... I agree, sometimes you just gotta enjoy the moment because it is worth enjoying!!! Your road trip sounds soooo much fun. In a VIBE no less? HOLY cow... that is an adventure in itself :worship:

I like to think that vacation starts the minute that you hit the road. The departure is the beginning, not the arrival.:goodvibes

Thank goodness for the converter! Those little beauties saved me many an outdoor Christmas light catastrophe from happening! :lmao:

So true! We had that issue this past year. I never thought about getting one of those then though. DH had to take the strand down and put up a different one!:rotfl2:

Well, I am glad I didn't miss too much! I read your dining review, btw, and it's made me start rethinking my December plans. :thumbsup2

Oh YEEEES! :rotfl:What a great reference!

Dining is part of the fun! You gotta plan fun places to eat.

Houston to Chipley? Y'all did good on time, despite the traffic! :) And I agree, it is always better for the second day driving to be shorter! I made sure of that when I was trekking back and forth between TX and DC!
