Just a quick question. Is there such thing as too much sleep? I have the worst time getting up in the a.m. and I am sleeping anywhere from 8-10 hours a night!! I need to start working out, but I can't bring myself to get up in the morning and by the time I get home from work at 6 and make dinner, I just want to relax. Any help :confused3 or advice?

sounds funny I know, but if you did exercise, chances are you could get up better.....I'm not sure how to make it happen, unless you were able to maybe walk during lunch hour, or have a leisurly walk through the neighborhood after dinner with your DH? Doesnt have to be high impact, just regular exercise will help

I wish I could sleep 6 hours a night, let alone 8-10...thats something I'm working on....

Dh said the same thing. I am just so tired by 9 p.m. that I go to bed. I tell myself I will get up at 6 and workout, but then I sleep till 7. :confused3

I find that on days i go to the YMCA to work out after work, i get up a little better the next morning. I have to FORCE myself to workout cause i know i need to, but when i wake up feeling better, that makes me want to work out even more!!

Have you always needed a lot of sleep? Some people are just like that. How long do you sleep on weekends and do you wake up refreshed?

If you feel fine otherwise, I'd try a nice walk around the neighborhood in the evening and see if that helps.

I require a lot of sleep. A minimum of 8 hours, and on the weekends I will often sleep 10.

My DH keeps bugging me to have a sleep study done. He has sleep apnea (pretty severe). He used to hardly be able to function he was so tired. Now that he has his CPAP, he feels refreshed after a normal nights sleep.

Maybe you should look into having a sleep study done?

I guess probably longer on the weekends, lol. If we go to bed around 10 or 10:30, we don't get up till 9. I feel like I am wasting my life away sleeping! :rotfl2:

Sometimes people think they are sleeping too much, when if fact, they may not be sleeping enough. That doesn't mean that you aren't spending enough time in bed but you may not be getting the quality of sleep required when you are there. Be sure you are not drinking any caffeinated beverages before bedtime nor any alcohol. While alcohol may help you get off to sleep, it doesn't keep you there and may account for restlessness that you may not realize you have but interferes with a good night's sleep. Needless to say, exercize is a good idea...regardless.

I remember a time in my life when I required a lot of sleep. It was a gradual thing that just kept getting worse. I would get up at five for work and come home and take a nap if possible, then fix dinner and be ready to go straight to bed. It's like all I did was work my job and sleep. My dd was in her 'tween' years then and she would want to go out to walmart or the mall and so many times I just told her no. My feet started to swell a lot so I went to the dr and found out I was severly anemic. I had no idea until it got that bad. After months of lots and lots of iron pills I was back to only requiring a normal amount of sleep again (and spending half my life at the mall with dd, lol). You might want to check it out with a dr since my only symptom for months was needing more sleep.

I think everyone has posted some great suggestions. I would go to your Dr. and have tests run for Anemia, hypothyroidism, sleep apnea, etc. Being chronically sleepy can be dangerous. They are now saying that driving while drowsy is as dangerous as driving while drunk. Time to get it checked out.

Thanks everyone. I think I am going to start trying to do a bit of excercising at night and see if that helps. I hate getting out of bed in the morning. Thanks for all the great suggestions and I am glad that it's not just me!

If I get too much sleep (over 9 hours) it often times brings on a migraine....not sure why tho so I try not to get tons of sleep. I exercise if I feel tired and it's not time to go to bed. :)

Go to your doctor and have blood done to check for hypothroidism. When I was 18 yrs old, felt so tired all the time, even after getting 10 hours of sleep. the family doc said I needed vitamins? Went to a specialist and found out I had an underactive thryoid.

How old are you? I noticed that in my 20's I needed a lot more sleep than I do now in my 30's. And yes, on those days that I do get more sleep than usual, I notice that I'm more tired.

Don't exercize too late at night. It can be too stimulating and you may not be able to fall asleep.
