So I was looking at the Skype website, is it a free service or do I have to sign up for a monthly fee?

It depends on what you are using it for. I use it to chat call my friends that are using the internet on their computers also. so if its internet to internet its free, but you can use it to call a landline phone which you would have to pay for. So it really depends on what you use it for.

Agree with previous poster. They offer free services and services you have to pay for. I use it to video chat with family around the country which is free, but I pay a small monthly fee to upgrade to group video chat so we can all see and talk to one another at the same time. Check out their website it lists their information.

I use it for computer to computer video chat which is free but I also have it on my old iPhone 3 (no cell plan on it anymore so basically an ipod touch) and the kids can call my cell using the wi fi from the house. I use it from my iphone 4 for long distance calls. I pay 2.99/month and it comes out of my paypal account.

I haven't used it with someone else with Skype yet, but when I was having trouble using my home phone to call my DH overseas last month, I downloaded Skype and used it as a phone and called him. I bought $10 in calls and it was .03 per min. to call him in Central America.

Oovoo is becoming more popular. Maybe check it out too.

If someone you know has Skype you can call them with your Skype for free. Calling landlines to about 50 different countries is less than $10/month but they charge differently to some countries if you try to call cell phones. You can also conference people in for no extra charge so we can sit here in Georgia and let my mother who is in New Jersey with no computer have a free conversation with my sister in Virginia and my grandchildren in England.

We have been using Skype for years to call my wife's family in England and some friends in Australia and Greece. It's worked beautifully.

She also uses Skype from her Android phone but you have to use that from a WiFi hot spot. That is what she'll be doing when she spends next month in England to call me because her mother doesn't have a computer with Internet.

They do have other pay services but we've never had a need for them. All in all it's worked brilliantly for years.

Skype is the best way for me to watch my grandchildren as they grow since we live too far away to see them all the time. They are very little, so changes are constant. We do the computer to computer and it doesn't cost anything. Also, my DD can Skype with her DH in Afghanistan and his two year old DD can "hug" him. It is such a blessing for things like that!

Thanks for the info. I plan on using computer to computer to see my dd and new grandson 8 hours away. Maybe I'll try to tackle figuring it out today. :surfweb:
